Should I skip the Colorado?

Skip the Colorado grind?

137 members have voted

  1. 1. Should I free exp the whole Colorado grind and go straight to the North Carolina (requires 165 000 free exp)?

    • Yes, the Colorado is a horrible ship and you'll save yourself a lot of pain and credits.
    • Not necessary, the grind is doable and the ship ain't that bad to play.
    • No need, the Colorado is a completely fine ship and the grind will make you a more experienced USN BB captain.
    • The Colorado is a very good ship and you'll love it.

So I've nearly finnished my grind on the New Mexico and I've had a blast with it. I was getting really excited over advancing through the american BB ship line and getting a stronger version of the New Mexico at tier 7. But then I searched up some threads regarding the Colorado and in every thread people have ranted about what a horrible ship it is and will only bring you pain.

So I've been thinking about buying gold and just free exp my way through the entire Colorado grind and just go straight from the New Mexico to the North Carolina in hopes of saving myself a lot of painful grinding, creds and valuable time, and before anybody asks if I can afford to free exp the colorado, my answer is yes. Although I'd have to gather the exp first tho on elite ships as I currently only have 25k exp to convert to free exp, but I was thinking I would just keep playing the New Mexico once it goes elite and gather exp with it to convert, and to play my Atago which I own.

So Should I do it or not?

I like the Colorado, but it's quite unforgiving. It takes you from a ship that holds your hand a bit with many guns and requires you to use some slightly derpy but very hard hitting guns. It really messes up BBs because of the high alpha (getting 15-20k salvoes is not uncommon even without citadels) but it's less good against cruisers, and requires you to get better with your repair kit timing, shot timing and your evasion. You WILL come out the other side as a better player, but learning is hard and can be frustrating when stuff you think works doesn't.

Just play it. You can always learn something with a new ship, no matter how good/ bad it is.

You should play it. Maybe not from start till end, but research and mount everything, then give it at least few more battles. Who know what knowledge and experience you will get. You can always skip it later.

Though as for myself, i already prepared the flags. lots of them :)

I actually found the Colorado to be a bit better than most earlier US BB's.

She at least has somewhat decent firepower.

The way it looks like she is almost capsizing when she turns kind of grew on me too.

Grind it, man.

It all goes into Captain's experience - and that's the most important.

I've done it, didn't really like it, but I'd still advice you to grind it anyways.

It's not impossibly bad, just a bit annoying and RNG-based. It's an experience, even if not pleasant, you can form your own opinion of Colorado. Also it's fairly much money to pay in order not to play a ship - the gold is better spent on some premium ships and/or ship slots in my opinion.

The biggest issue I've encountered is that the low HE pool makes it vulnerable to the kind of HE spam you see quite a lot at high tiers. It makes missing cruisers that are in close proximity kind of painful.

Avoid if possible. Worst ship I played to date. Higher caliber guns just don't compensate for every other fault this floating turd has. Recap - as slow as Mex, turns worse. Guns rotate and load slower and it has less of them. Guns also have less accuracy and they tend to over pen cruisers, so if you do play it, expect a lot of 1220 damage shots when it does hit, which it will do rarely at any range, you can hope to avoid being peppered by cruisers firing HE at you and setting you on fire ALL THE TIME. You will get occasional citadel hit, but it's more on the "I will sleep with super model tonight" kind of basis than on anything realistically expected.

Accuracy on Colorado is "special". A rotten cucumber, being thrown by a drunk Russian game developer after being challenged to a home made vodka drinking contest (which i believe was used as an algorithm to calculate the spread on Colorado's guns) has a better chance of hitting a pinhead at 500m than Colorado's guns have at hitting a broadside of an enemy cruiser at 16+km.

If you want to enjoy yourself more than playing the Colorado, go get a cigarette light it up, and start making pretty little circles on you belly and below. You will also get lung cancer and/or die of old age faster than you will grind through Colorado, if you are playing on  a standard account.

Either you spend a week grinding an absolute piece of crap, or you work two hours overtime and go straight for Awesome Carolina. My choice was a simple one.

Thanks for your input guys and keep 'em coming! :D

At the moment I'm leaning more twoards to the first option, to free exp the whole colorado grind and possibly save myself a lot of precious grind-time, creds and pain (from what I've heard from most people who have played it).

I could also add, that maybe the problem is not the Colorado itself. It is just the fact, that it comes after a decent BB, New Mexico which is a decent BB in kind of MM it gets. Colorado is not. It could be a good tier 5 BB, but not tier 7. What makes is so painful is the fact that it is tier 7 BB and you need so much XP to upgrade it and I don't even want to think how long it will take me to get North Carolina, probably a month or two. Another thing is, I was getting consistently good games in New Mexico, earned XP fast and enjoyed it. With Colorado, my XP gain is so low, it will take forever, and I am bleeding credits with each game. So I have to play other ships to be able to buy upgrades for Colorado. Which is OK, if I dedicated all my games to Colorado, I would have to put a bullet in my head. Bad thing is, disaster of a first hull Colorado is taking a serious toll on my wits and I get bad games in other ships as well, just takes all the fun out of the game.
My guess is WG put Colorado in tech tree to force people to either get premium account to get that nightmare over with as soon as possible or to spend money to convert XP to bypass it.

I am just sorry I got the Colorado before Pensacola, it may not be the best cruiser, but it can't be worse than Colorado.

Just for illustration - I had to play over 20 games to retrain my commander from 50% skills to even be able to use his skills, usually took me cca 5 games on lower tiers to do the same. That's how bad that thing is. Just not good enough for it's place on tier 7.

I don't believe you. Aren't you one of those that loves the Colorado? I mean you love Hot Spot so you must also love the Colorado, no?

I hate it. I ground it and upgraded it fully and I can't hit sqat with it. Ive stopped playing it and gone back to NM because with that I have a lot of fun and can also covert my XP. Another couple of hours and ill be at the NC.

For me, wasting free xp for fully upgrade it, its great so far. What ever they fix since August really made difference. So far so good, but i reserve change my opinion.

Fair enough to use free exp to grind modules but skip the whole ship?  I was very fearful of this ship after looking at forums but I really like it.  I don't have enough credits for North Carolina but I have also heard mixed things about that ship too.  Plus at tier 8 the repair bill starts to get insane.  I would recommend playing this ship.  Only minor gripe is the silly amount of hit points.
