I'm done with DD's.

Just had to take a break from the game and tried it today once more.

I really love the DD's, well used to love them.

All the nerfs I could live with, took some time to adapt but with some effort I can make them work.

One thing that really sucks the fun out of playing DD's is this, the insane engine and rudder damage.

My first game today in a DD. I took 10 hits in total and lost my engine 4 times. Even with the engine upgrade equipment mounted every other hit takes engine out.

Yes, but DD's are supposed to be fragile.

Sure, that's why they have a fraction of HP compared to other ships.

All things keeping you alive are useless if your engine and rudder are destroyed every other hit.

Lay smoke, yes and with rudder out you drive in a circle right out of the smoke.

Get the "last stand" skill. Sure, level four skill, never EVER before tier 6. It takes 10 skillpoints to get it. Even with the gift commander it takes I don't know how much xp.

And on top of that, spending 4 or 5 times 500 gold retraining captains only to get this skill?

Yeah, I know how you feel, even with all the equipment and crew skills my DDs get their engine/rudder damaged at least 3 or more times if I survive longer and that needs a bit of fixing...

Is it true that smokescreen only lasts 20 seconds now, it used to be 60 seconds?

Yes, and although one could argue 20 sec is to short and 30 would be better, I think it was a good nerf, 60 was to much.

Often half the battlefield(sea, how do you call it) was obscured by smoke.

Join the club, I've moved to cruisers because of it (well, and silly lack of progression). Played destroyers  for 400+ matches, kinda done with em apart from daily's / occasional seal club session. Don't care if they fix it or not, they will run out of destroyer players eventually at this rate.

Amen to that brothers. 20 sec smoke screen is a tad short, and indeed when someone just look at your ship your rudder will be taken out.

The problem is that you are spotted by planes all the time. I wouldnt mind being fragile if I was able to be somewhat stealthy, but the carrier plane spam just disables the dd playstyle completely, to the point of tedium.

Btw, I do still play DD's but the Japanese ones.because they are much stealthier. As long as this will stay, because of the little wot-whiners flooding this beautiful game and whining about everything that kills them, especially torpedo's. I will enjoy this game as long as possible till WG turns this game too, like wot, into a children's game.

when you are on the "wrong" side of the map, yes it sucks. On the other hand I find it a challenge to survive, but with the DD nerf, yeah a bit hard.

Yes, it is doable. But it also means you might have to spend half the match looking for an opening, and that is not very attractive gameplay. Sooner or later its going to wear down the DD population.

In CBT I mainly played DD's and BB's. Was fairly decent in both and enjoyed playing. Since OBT, I've reached the Izokaze...and given up for the most part. Sick of no matter how stealthily I approach to attack, I get spotted outside my detection range...and slaughtered! Or as above, my rudder and engines are constantly shot out until i'm dead! Same with my Grem, at 8km my torps always miss, close to 7km...spotted by wtf ever...engines/rudder shot out....slaughtered!

BB's?...struggling to get past the Wyoming due to the stress of constant numpty teams, my own bad decision making and not being able to escape, or bad MM. Only cruiser play has kept me playing this game since OBT, so I'm expecting those to be nerfed anytime now!

Stay hidden :P

And how to do that?

With all the planes in the sky and short range of your weapons?

OK, you can hide behind the CV's.

I want to play the game and the way DD's are now I can't play the game in them.

Lol I'm salty after being camped by a carrier's fighters just been YOLOing my Farragut into BBs and torping then going to watch a stream til the battle finishes, it'll probably murder my stats although I'm determined to make it to tier 10 DDs I'm not looking forward to what I must face, also bleh at latest YOLO 5 hits from 4.5km torps on a New Mexico and he lived.

Strange... I have lots of fun since 0.4.0 with my DDs... okay, I'm only up to Tier V yet, but all those Battlesheeps I slaughtered on the way to get there *nomnomnom*

BTW, when Your rudder gets hit, slow down and set up the smoke... that way you won't move out of it

And for me the visibilty works as expected. And with Camouflage even better..

I don't even mind the 20 seconds. I realy dislike the long cooldown and the fact that I have only 3 charges (with commander skill). It used to be 3 charges and 5 charches with commander skill. It means that with a US DD you have to wait 2,5 minutes (with consumable) before you realy can do something again. If you are through your smoke the US DD is nothing more as a suicide vessel (and they promissed that no suicide ships would appear in game ).

Nope.. it just means you have to adapt your style of play...

I hide between the "big boys", wait 'til they start shooting on their target, then add my gunfire to it. Usually the target ignores the "little stings" from the DD and takes the main offender as his target... until he learns that DDs can cause fires, too... but then it's often too late.

Or: stay hidden until a ship is engaged, then sprint in from the rear to make it eat eels...

Or use Pythagoras. Five km torpedoes CAN hit a ship that was seven km away from you when you fired them, leaving you invisible...

When the rules change - adapt or die... evolution in online games

Tier two DD's are just noobstomping in the IJN, torping invisible aginst new players, and even in USN DD's it is easy, new players don't know to prioritize DD's yet.

Tier 4 takes some skill, but as most new players powergrind the first 4 tiers you get away with a lot.

The tier 5 IJN is very strong because it can blindfire torps, but after that it is a joke.

Torps to slow or to short range on IJN till tier 8.

USN is just a joke, yes but your guns are good. Well actually they suck. Such insane high firing arc you often have to use half zoom to get your target and aimthinghy in screen. I won't even mention the torp range.

USN= use a weapon and get spotted.

I can adept to all those changes and did.

But you can't be hidden all game long and once you get spotted you die. Way to often even if you do everything right the multiple rudder and engine damage is what kills you.

Like I said in the OP, I learned to play in DD's with all the nerfs they had to endure, but this is something that can';t be played around by with skill, DD's are hard enough to master already.

DD's have more than enough disadvantages to have to deal with this on top.

I mostly don't get a destroyed rudder and engine in my mine and isokaze. The reason is easy
I stay hidden. know your detectability range watch for planes and you don't get shoot. Also in IJN cruisers: Only fire your guns if an enemy DD is inside your detection range. That works [edited]well for my and i've got no Problems with DD's at all. For american DD's you could either fire on distracted enemys and be ready to hide behind friendly ships or Islands. Or you use the old ambush tactic. Still works great.

Yeah the smoke Screen nerf changed a lot in DD Play. But that was it. It changed the DD Play. So adapt and be still op ;)

Well, you can thank all the BB and CA whining that eventually got DDs nerfed. Enjoy. CVs are next so don't switch on to them.

The Nicholas has 5 % chance to start a fire. Less if the enemy has Fire prevention. The damage you do is almost nothing, And you have to be in range. So in front of your own CA's. Combined with the amount of planes in the air it means a certain dead. 2nd The "Big"boys are mostly not in the area where the best ambush spots are.  The strongest side of the DD are the torpedo's. So I try to use those as much as posible.

I have adapted my gameplay. Playing much more defensive. The fun of the US DD was that you could use it as an offensive weapon and get great results with it. Now you can atack once and after that you have to retreat, for a next attack. If your target has company that wasn't spotted, you die most of the time.

In japanese DD's that's easy. I love my Minekaze too, but when I play the USA destroyers it is a different ballgame
