For all the fans of the legendary USS Missouri

uss-missouri-firing-wallchan_122341.jpg

She's the third and the last ship in the US navy to receive the name of USS Missouri, the last US battleship ever built.

She ferociously shelled Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the second world war, even on the lands of Japan itself, industrial targets were not safe from her thunderous 16 inch guns.

She witnessed the end of the great Empire of Japan, as the official and final surrender was being signed aboard her.

She participated in diversionary tactics and bombarded enemy positions in the Korean War.

She unleashed her wrath on Iraqis in the operation Desert Storm, legend says that her salvos officially announced the dawn of war on terrorism.

This magnificent leviathan survived one of the most violent times in human history.

After receiving 11 battle stars throughout her career, here she is today - at her final resting place in Pearl Harbour , towering over the islands of Hawaii - as a grim reminder of the horrors of war.

With manly tears in my eyes, I raise the highest of salutes, to this absolute beauty of a ship, lest we forget your name  :honoring:

"Our final day has arrived. Today the final chapter in battleship Missouri’s history will be written. It's often said that the crew makes the command. There is no truer statement ... for it's the crew of this great ship that made this a great command. You are a special breed of sailors and Marines and I am proud to have served with each and every one of you. To you who have made the painful journey of putting this great lady to sleep, I thank you. For you have had the toughest job. To put away a ship that has become as much a part of you as you are to her is a sad ending to a great tour. But take solace in this—you have lived up to the history of the ship and those who sailed her before us. We took her to war, performed magnificently and added another chapter in her history, standing side by side our forerunners in true naval tradition. God bless you all.

Captain Albert L. Kaiss"

the last battleship ever built in the world.

Yes, a very nice ship that rightfully deserves it's accolades. However the last battleship to ever be built was HMS Vanguard.

Sir you could be right, they were both launched on the same year, but I think Missouri wsa launched early 1944, Vanguard - late 1944, I will change the line to - last US battleship ever made

^^^

This is true, though Vanguard was built after she served less time.

RANDOM USS MISSOURI/IOWA CLASS FACTS

  • As a museum ship Missouri has a small V with two bars across it at the waterline. This is to show her watertight integrity. If the V gets at all lower, she’s slowly sinking. (Not that she is)
  • She had a bakery that could produce 1800 loaves of bread daily
  • She had a engineering staff of about roughly 500 men which is also about the same as two average destroyer crews compliments
  • The first plate of her keel was riveted by Rear Admiral Clark H. Woodward
  • Her first aircraft kill was a Nakajima Ki-49 (code named Helen)
  • When she was at sea again after her grounding in 1950 the ship’s band played the Missouri Waltz to celebrate.
  • It was planned during her 1980′s refit to produce a sub caliber shell for her 16 inch guns. It would of been 1000lbs and have a range of 38 mile.
  • On of her mess kitchens was called the Missouri Express.
  • To combat modern torpedoes she could tow a SLQ 25 Nixie. The was to deceive acoustic homing torpedoes.
  • Before her mothballing Missouri last fired her guns in anger during the Korean War in 1953, it was 38 years before she would fire again during the Gulf War in 1991.
  • During her Gulf War Service her EOD team (picked up to handle Iraqi ordinance) took out 10 sea mines.
  • Before Missouri could stand as a museum ship in Pearl harbour they needed to get rid of the environmentally dangerous sea life (dangerous to pearl harbours that is) that had grew on her after decommissioning. To get rid of it she spent 2 weeks in Columbia River where the fresh water killed it all off.
  • In 2005 the Russian Government put up billboards showing off the Victorious Russian Navy. The USS Missouri was on these billboards much to Russian embarrassment.

I have seen her in 2 movies too ("Under siege" in 1991 and recently in "Battleship" ) the 1st film more "realistic showing" than the 2d ...like "thunderstruck" from AC/DC in "Battleship" though :P

Isn't "Under siege" the one with Steven Seagal? :D

PS: Thank you for reminding me that scene from Battleship, I will add it to the original post :3

One of the best battleship ever build and now it s a museum anyone can tell my why?but the true reason

Because now, main fleets are smaller and rely purely on big aircraft carriers and escort ships like destroyers, some cruisers and frigates. Air superiority won the pacific war (Also north american war efforts during that time and Chuichi Nagumo's/ Takeo Kurita's awful decisions in Midway and Leyte respectively ).

Also, battleships cost too much to build and maintain and the United States doesn't invest that much money on military equipment like it did before.

Because massive boats are expensive to build and easy targets for everything.

While it is questioned whether you could actually sink a fully armored battleship with cruise missiles, the thing that is not in question is that a large scale missile attack will send the ship packing back to home port. The Superstructure does not have the benefit of thick belt armor.

Mission kill - the inability to pursue the assigned mission due to damage/etc.

Land a solid hit on an aircraft carrier that ruins the runway and catapult and boom, mission kill. You prolly not gonna sink a carrier with missiles alone, but you will send it packing.

Missiles are cheap compared to the target they are used against. And saturation attacks vs a large ship like a BB are going to be successful.

French BB Jean Bart was armed in 1949 and put in active duty in 1955. But, built started in december 1936, that's right... War interfere in its lauch, of course.
