Maybe someone could clarify regarding the above. I am steaming along in my Venezia and click the smoke generator. The timer shows I think 9 seconds and continues to refresh on an on-going basis, always 9 seconds. As far as I am aware there is no indication of the total time left on the smoke generator. This means the smoke period ends with no warning and you are detectable. Am I missing something or is there and indicator showing the time left when the smoke stops.

that's how long the current smoke puff will stay. The consumable should show another timer for how long new puffs are generated

It is stated on consumable itself for how many more seconds it will be operating. 

I am not sure if you have to turn this option on (to show in seconds) or it is default mode.

I'm pretty sure it is a standard feature - I've never fiddled with any such setting.

Note the 33s timer on the smoke's consumable icon, as per @Klopirat & @Sir_Grzegorz's replies.

Cheers NewHorizons_1. Despite playing for years I have been focused on the repeating orange ticker at the top of the screen rather than the consumable box at the bottom of the screen.

Talk about tunnel vision.
