Back in 2016 you got 1 slot per nation. So if you wanted to grind different classes you eventually ran out of port slots. And you didn't have like today 3 per update for free. You had to buy them.

True, sadly. Mostly for me because you can't do any missions with them. You can, however, do Naval Battles.

I didnt stress with griding all lines at once and I'm fairly certain I never spent gold (or money) on port slots. They popped up in crates and some missions (?) At least it was sufficient for me.

I remember buying about 10. I started in January 2016 on this account and in November 2015 on my older one that I abandoned. I was grinding the lines normally not too fast (3 at the time) but eventually after 3 months I had to buy slots. These were the times there were no such thing like containers mate. Containers came in mid 2016. And at first there was no port slots inside of them, they were added in 2017. 

 

I'm pretty sure that if the current playerbase would be met with such conditions - half of them would leave the game at instance.

I remember one single time when WG discounted the port slots to 25 %. I bought several back then. After that, it seems it became easier to get port slots through those other means.

82 free port slots in my case. If memory serves right, never bought them directly because...

...when added to the container system it was an absolute feast for a few months (hyperbole incoming): port or commander slots in every other crate, until it was tweaked and watered down. Prior to that, yes, they were a scarce resource for F2P players and one of the reasons I stayed for so long at T7 before acquiring a T8 (old Fubuki) so I could participate/advance in a ranked season.

P.S.: And when it was watered down, I do remember that a sudden spike in detonations happened, which led to the conspiracy theory that WG had swapped the RNG seeds for crates and detonations.

I cant remember when port slots were in discount.

Get em if you need, I have 64 empty slots

At the moment 228 ships in port and now no empty slots remaining. For the santa crates event I got some older or lower tier ships back in port for the extra coal.

Oh dear: 131 spares (versus 495 ships, of which two smell and their mothers dress them funny i.e. submarines)...

 

Used to buy new ones occasionally, but freebies have tended to mushroom rather over the last couple of years.
