[LOKTR] Warwolf_530 Players 9 posts 4,186 battles Report post #1 Posted December 19, 2022 At 08:10 this morning, the canon at the Heugh Battery sounded and a group of solemn folks, gathered in Redheugh Gardens, lowered their heads. On the 16th December, 1914 at approximately 08:10 in the morning, the Bombardment of Hartlepool began. The three German ships were the battle cruisers Seydlitz and Moltke, and the older, armoured cruiser,Blucher. They had much larger guns than the defending guns on the Hartlepool Batteries. The warships fired 1150 shells (some up to 11 in., or 27 cm, in diameter) into the Hartlepools. The two coastal defence batteries on the Heugh managed to return fire with 123 shells, the largest of which was 6 in.(15 cm) in diameter. It is estimated around 130 some people were killed, including 37 children under the age of 16.

[R7S] lovelacebeer Players 4,158 posts 25,223 battles Report post #5 Posted December 19, 2022 Despite the huge propaganda effort during the time with the rallying cry of “Remember Scarborough”, the bombardments of Hartlepool, Scarborough and Whitby have sadly largely been forgotten. So this was an interesting little reminder.

[M-P-M] Bigruss42 Players 126 posts 11,785 battles Report post #7 Posted December 19, 2022 Yes the Bombardment of Hartlepool is largely forgotten. It was a more significant port than it is today. But it is the home of the National museum of the Royal Navy and is home to the oldest Royal Navy ship still afloat HMS Trincomalee https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Trincomalee

You can climb right down into the power deck. Warrior was also good to visit when they rebuild it there in the 80s. Shame it moved to the other end of the country when it was completed.
