The contents of containers are determined randomly based on the drop chances at the moment when each one is opened. It's important to understand how the mathematical expectation works—the specified probability does not mean that you're guaranteed to get the desired contents after opening a certain number of containers. For example, a 10% chance of obtaining a particular reward doesn't mean that you're guaranteed to obtain it after opening 10 containers.

Statistics and probabilities are reflected more accurately for larger data sets. The larger the number of attempts, the closer the results will be to the mathematical expectation. For example, if you toss a coin 10 times, it doesn't necessarily mean that in five cases it's going to be heads, and in another five—tails, even though both sides of the coin have an equal 50% chance of landing facing upward. But if a coin is tossed thousands of times, the probability for each side of the coin landing facing upward will tend toward 50%.

 

Bearing this in mind, when opening containers, there will be those who "are lucky" and those who "aren't lucky." A situation could be possible where an item has a 10% drop chance, but the player doesn't receive it even after opening 50 containers, simply because the probability didn't work out in their favor. This can result in situations where some players are "lucky" enough to obtain the item on the first try, or even receive five such items from the first 10 containers they open, while an "unlucky" player may open numerous containers without getting the desired item and end up being disappointed. The fact that statistic-wise, such cases are few and far between compared to more predictable results, will no doubt be poor consolation for such an "unlucky" player.

 

That's why, separately from the drop chances, there's a special mechanic for containers that guarantees that a group with a reward will be dropped after opening a certain number of containers of the same type. This mechanic basically protects players against runs of "bad luck" and works in the same way for everyone. The only thing it takes into account is the number of containers opened by the player. The "counter" of guaranteed drops resets when the desired reward is either dropped randomly by itself or is dropped because of this special mechanic.

 

In other words... are containers, for example, acquired in 2021/2022 Christmas / New Year festive event counted in this "Guaranteed Drops" (i.e. "Mercy / Pity" rule) or not...

As those are always different containers, I'd say it's always counted from 0 for every event.

Besides, keeping track of container drops like that could be a serious hassle.

If we're talking about Santa's Gift containers, the mechanics of the guaranteed drop in Santa's Gift New Year's 2021 container continue when you open Santa's Gift New Year's 2022, since it's the same container (but you have to consider that it has different types).

Also that is assuming that you did not open any ships in those previous 12 containers - the pity mechanic resets once you drop a ship.
