Never ever start buying premium ships

For real, newcomers and semis - never waste your money buying a ship from the shop. They are all cannon food with nothing special but optic.

Nothing compares to leveled up ships. This is just a kind of scam to get your money.

That happens when you buy ships on Tiers you are not prepared for.

I see OP bought some.

They aren't all bad, though. At least they aren't any worse than the tech tree ships. I don't think they are necessary for casual play, but if you need a quick way to train your captains and maybe farm some credits, a few may be necessary for your key nations. Few, that is, and quality is more important than quantity.

I'd say the HSF Harekaze is one of the exceptions to the rule the OP suggested.   I've never regretted buying that TVIII DD even when uptiered to TX.

I also enjoy the Tirpitz just for the LOLs.

and in a perfect game all premium/special ships would be worse than the techtree ships...

@Klopirat - absolutly correct. This should be the rule! I love my Gneisenau and the Bismarck.

If you love these results, where is your problem with premiums then?

The results are similar.

I've kept my Bismark and play it most days (in co-op).  I do miss the torps from the Tirpitz at times though.

@ColonelPete - I know that. Although it sounds like mimimi - it is not. I like my self skilled ships and I am happy to play with them.

The best way is to level up and train the captain the hard way. Agree. I was annoyed because the ships I payed for has no special or unique ability. I had hoped so.

Spend that money for a cool beer while playing is much better.

Do not hope for something, when you can inform yourself.

The abilities of these ships are not selected at the moment you buy them. You can inform yourself in advance about what they do and what they do not.

Some have unique abilities, some are just variants of existing ships or just perculiar designs that did not fit the tech tree.

I daresay this is a player issue, not a commander or ship issue. A BB player with a mere triple-digit number of battles will have a hard time with high tier ships regardless if they are premium or techtree. The difference between those will just be that he is performing on different levels of terrible (WR in the 40%s vs. WR in the 30%s). Premium ships are not meant to be more powerful (though some are), but to be a shortcut without the need to grind the ships, grind the modules and retrain a commander, while also offering a better economy.

Maybe you should only express your opinion on ships when you reach the average values possible in at least one ship. I don't mean you any harm, but you have a lot of room to improve.

Basically it's true, Wargaming wants our money, but here Wargaming hasn't gone too far in terms of strength with the premium ships.

So you basically bought a Tirpitz (a decent enough tier 8 premium) and a Pommern (which has been left behind) hoping they were P2W or something? Information is your friend before making purchases I guess. And besides even if you think they are bad they will still rake in more money than what your regular ships earn so hey.

If I take a look at the strongest ships at every tier, most of them are premiums/special ships. But many of them are also not available anymore.

The only premium ships I play for fun are Enterprise, Jean Bart and musashi, none of which are available anymore. I'm semi tempted to include the Marceau, which is, and is probably one of the few premiums worth buying...

Thanks for the advice in OP. But no thanks...

Most of my premiums / freemiums are coal, freeXP, RP and a bit of steal.

I bought several premium ships. First was Scharnhorst and Anshan (a Steam package), somewhere early on was a Tirpitz, later on an Exeter and the most recent was Al Littorio. Bought a few black ships via crates.

Not because of pay to win (my WR<50%) and I agree that most techtree ships are better. Though the latter is probably because of the many games I play to level up to tier-10/11.
Also, when there were still missions of for the unique upgrades, they also made you learn to play the new tier-10 pretty wel...

I bought becuase I think or I was thinking the ship could be fun...
And some of those ships actually are a lot of fun. And some of them are port queens. Played once or twice and never again (except for a co-op to unlock a crate).

Even got the FdR just happenend to have had enough steel during that internet hype of CC's back then, but its one of my least played ships.
And if you want the definition of port-queen, grindthe Pan--Asia cruisers to the tier-10. Compared to those, I play my money-bought ships all the time...

Besides, we are living in a consumption society - this one just happens to be digital...
(in that sense its little different from a music streaming service).

A little of this is sensible: newcomers shouldn't probably buy premiums, at least not above about T6. It's a good idea to get a bit of experience with the game, and in all classes (probably excepting submarines), before committing money to high tier premium ships.

The rest is, I'm afraid, largely nonsense. Some premiums are excellent, some are poor (Harekaze II for example <shudder>), and the bulk are arguably variations on the theme of average. Whilst WG do plenty of things that warrant a kicking, unbalanced premiums are rarely one of them; whilst there is the occasional - notorious - exception, most are generally there or therabouts (and newer ones can all be nerfed, so no problem there).

OP: you have three premiums (that I can see) that you've played in Randoms, and your stats are suggestive that there is still plenty of room for improvement in terms of knowledge of the game. Three ships is far too few to be making sweeping statements about "all" premium ships. You shouldn't be surprised by very much in the way of premium ships, if you do some very basic research before opening your wallet:

  1. Almost everything in the game is in the Wiki (https://wiki.wargaming.net/en/World_of_Warships); entries for the very newest may be a bit sparse, but most stuff is in here.
  2. Read reviews; the gold standard used to be LWM (https://forum.worldofwarships.com/topic/210980-mouses-catalog-of-ship-reviews/), although she seems to have stepped back a bit recently, after WG dropped a major bollock. Still, if it isn't a very new ship, start here (although beware older reviews, especially prior to the CV rework - a *lot* has changed since then).
  3. Ask on the forum: despite a tendency towards somewhat unsympathetic responses to less well-considered forum posts, people on here are generally very helpful when people ask sensible questions. Look at who is giving which opinions though, and try and relate your style and level to the advice being given.

To finish: I currently see Tirpitz, Pommern, and Ashitaka on your roster (played in Randoms); mine tend to live in PvP most of the time, but even so those three are all perfectly serviceable (assuming you have a good enough captain in them). I think your problem may reside between keyboard and chair; I'd suggest focusing a bit on honing your skill-set further (and playing a more diverse range of classes/nations), and you'll eventually get decent value from these things. BTW it's a good idea to join a clan: good potential source of division mates, who can potentially help you with some pointers (not to mention the economic bonuses).
