For anyone that's interested, Daily Bounce has a review of Maya (apparently due out on Friday): https://thedailybounce.net/world-of-warships/world-of-warships-final-review-japanese-tier-vii-premium-cruiser-maya/

Selected quote: "Weeeeeell… Unless you are a massive fan of the Atago-class cruisers or the IJN Navy as a whole, I really cannot recommend Maya. While she is durable compared to other tier VII cruisers, her game impact is laughably low due to the poor damage output.

It really is an Atago brought to a lower tier and with both knee caps busted with a rocket-propelled sledgehammer."

I'll probably pick her up anyway*, besides 'muh history!', she'll probably be quite fun in Narai (where shorter-ranged torps, and poor concealment don't really matter)...

*Assuming WG manage to make it to the end of the week without doing anything *excessively* egregious.

Imma gonna get her, because Atago class. Also, i missed ARP Maya (which is a reskinned Atago).

I've seen several streamers playing her today and games up to and including TVIII were she performed pretty decent-ish.

She got crapped on pretty hard by TIX and CVs tho.

Still, a must buy for me.

Colour me unsurprised. Dropping her down a tier does not make up for losing a fifth of her main battery firepower..

Its almost as if they cant make an actual fun and good premium ship anymore besides a CV of course. Why did they not keep the 41 mm deck, 16 seconds reload,4 booster charges and 4 heals? What is up with the 10 seconds rudder shift, 3 seconds worse than myoko it also barely has any better AA than myoko. Is supposed to be a tanky cruiser? HOW with that armor???

Also the tankiest cruiser at t7 is not Toulon it is Boise and Nueve they might have worse range but man they have DPM , small citadel and a super heal. SHAME to treat an historic ship like this with arguably a beautiful look and name.

Wait, did they give Maya her actual historical camouflage: solid grey?

Awesome!

"Maya, as she is now, is trash"

"the firepower of this ship is just non-existent "

Personally this kind of language in a review always tells me "take everything here with a grain of salt".

Especially considering that some describe her as good, or even strong.

I'll make my own mind, as usual. I'm expecting her to be just ok.

(I mean, Hyuuga flew under the radar, and Harekaze II got no attention whatsoever, despite being nice ships...)

Same. Though I'm on the fence for Maya since I have ARP Maya already, different as they are.

Yes and yes regarding Hyuuga and Harekaze.

I bet Captain Lochley is wondering why you stole the Love me bat (With a few minor adjustments) she gifted to Mr Mayhew ...

I'm afraid my reference is rather older than that: a chap I used to work with back in London and Oxford used the phrase on occasion; I'm now curious where he (and presumably the Babylon 5 writers) got it from...

There are no Atago-class cruisers because Atago herself is a Takao-class cruiser, so I guess there is little knowledge to be gained from reading that article... :Smile_sceptic:

I can assure you, regarding the ingame ship, he is right. If you aren't a collector stay away from her.

According to "Imperial Japanese Navy World War II Ship Colors" by Snyder & Short Enterprises, the actual color was the Yokosuka Arsenal's variation of IJN Grey.

AFAIK every major Japanese dockyard had their own supply of "grey paint", which makes topic of "which grey for IJN" about as broad as "what is US Army olive drab" or "what is russian 4BO":cap_tea:

Well, at least there are fewer than 50 shades of grey because usually only the major naval arsenals did paintjobs to capital ships (Kure, Maizuru, Yokosuka, Sasebo).

They made Tone, though. Which *is* fun, even though it shares the same weak armour layout. It's a shame, really - they've mucked up the core functions of the ship for an MBRB gimmick. She would have been fine with good concealment, Atago's torp angles and eight guns on a 15s reload. Just a straightforward,  practical CA.

Which is a running theme with WG. Only cases where "just put MBRB you dummy" works, is when uptiering - Richelieu -> Jean Bart, Alsace -> Bourgogne alongside mild stat touch ups.

Then you have usual issue of "oh, our main supplier of paint got bombed, here's other one but it has bit different shade" or "different, bit more durable formula" etc.

Still, doing my research when trying to figure out "correct olive drab" for a Sherman model proved to be... entertaining, if nothing else:cap_like:

Though with IJN grey its probably "easier" to settle on something due to lack of surviving evidences besides few old photos, while there's still quite a few ww2 era US hardware, pictures of it as well modern attempts at "restoring", with various degrees of success by museums/collectors.

Well, an M4 is basically a mass-produced item of relatively small size (like a large car), and it does not require some sophisticated facility to (re-)paint it. It could be (and was often) done in the field with whatever was available, which led to innumerable variations.

Exactly, if they wanted MBRB IJN CA at t7 they should have taken Aoba and slapped it on her, then add heal if needed and presto...

It is a funny mechanism that people tend to upload only rather good first battles. Hardly no one reviews a ship under real or live circumstances, e.g. bottom tier wreakfests and 5 minute games. There are some who do however. Sure you get slapped with any ship at bottom tier, but all these shiny high damage games to promote a new ship are pi**ing me off.

I'm positively convinced crews on a (war)ship had few cans of paint to do some touch ups here and there on the sea or when moored somewhere?:cap_hmm: Alongside "sir, Imma yoink this barrel of grey paint thank you very much" and such.

I stopped playing her because of the constant uptiering, doubly bad thanks to the overpowered aircraft carriers at T 10. I know plenty of people who had good games in her but on the whole her range makes her skill ceiling very high in the current meta.

It's a shame. It's really a fun ship.
