Took a break from the game and now all my captains have less than subpar skills and apparently I have to pay real money to fix them

Following the suggestion I got from some people on reddit, I'll explain my problem here:

More than a year ago, I decided to take a break from the game to play some other games, as I usually do. I came back in june 2021, played a few matches only to realize that my captains were completely off.

After a bit of digging I discovered that there has been a complete rework of captains and all of my captain's points were automatically assinged.. except that they are completely off and make no sense to me.

Apparently I missed a period where they gave out a free respec of all captains as you would expect, but since I wasn't there when they did, I missed it and now all of my captains suck. No problem right? Just open a ticket and it'll get sorted. Nope.

Support said they cannot do anything, so I uninstalled out of frustration and never played again. But I love this game and I spent money on it and I honestly don't want to pay to respec or have to discard 20+ commanders just because the devs reworked the skill system.

I tried once again to open a ticket yesterday but to no avail. The answer is always that they cannot do anything and I'm stuck with awful captains that I grinded for hundreds of hours just to see them trashed?

Is this the way support handles things? Pay up or suck it?

The last glimmer of hope I have is posting here and ask a community manager if someone can do anything to help me get back into the game.

PS: I found various people in the same situation as mine, some say that a ticket was enough to get a reset, some say that there was no solution and they either payed, discarded the captains or uninstalled like I did.

If support can not help you you can always contact the CM's. They might be able to help you there.

Two returning people I know wrote to support and had their captains reset without issues, so there's that.

Yeah pretty much this. From what I found on Reddit, apparently it is really hit or miss. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm Italian and every time I asked support I got an Italian person telling me that they cannot do anything. Maybe Italian support has their hands tied?

Supports usually aren't divided into certain countries/languages. At least not regarding their authorizations.

I'm sorry but I'm really not used to do stuff like this, could you please explain how I should contact them? I thought opening a post here would suffice.

Thank you.

Staff isn't really able to read each and every post made in the forums. I asked YabbaCoe to have a look at it. Let's see how this plays out.

Me and a friend were in the same situation last year, be did get our captains reset via support ticket. Maybe it depends on which support person your ticket is assigned to or whatever.

Personally I would have stopped playing if they hadn't done that. I don't see why they didn't just reset everyone's captains and instead did that completely worthless auto-skilling....

From what I have heard from other players, you can try asking to CS for help. As they have done to some players I know, they should help you just fine.

Easy: because then plenty of people would pay up, not realising there were alternatives...

Hello.

Sorry to hear about your situations with commanders. But, unfortunately we can't help you with your request of commanders skills reset.

With the arrival of Commanders Skills Change, we had the option to reset them for free for the entire month. Also later in the year with some bigger changes in Commanders Skills we gave the option to reset those for the entire month again. So there was quite plenty time to do that.

Those skills were assigned automatically according to recommended skills or corresponding to the ones you had before.

But still there is a possibility, that in future we can issue another free commanders skills reset.

Sorry, but we can't make exceptions for anyone, just because you were not playing for a long time.

You could think about including the option for long time returnees. Say players who havent played for 3 months get free commander respec for X amount of ships of their choice. That would solve such a problem somewhat.

Well that sucks. I get that you guys gave the opportunity to have the free reset for months, but I, as many others, was not just playing or following the community.

It's not fair, however you say it, to break people's stuff while they're not in the game. Was it to hard to leave the points unallocated?

For example, Path of Exile gives a full free passive tree respec every major patch where they balance things out.

This is not just in my opinion.

Thank you for your answer anyway, now I can put my hopes to rest.. and probably never play again :(

I have zero skin in this particular game, but this is a Richard move. You (i.e. WG) could have just re-set everyone's captains and left the skill points un-allocated; instead you chose to shaft anyone who happened not to be playing at the right times...

Very poor.

Anyway, I will actually try to bring this up internally, kinda based on what @Yuu5Eleven mentioned, for some winback options or something similar.

But I can't promise you anything being changed now.

Same as OP.

Had to spend almost all my doubloons on captain respec. Apparently, "Incoming fire alert" is a priority skill instead of "Priority target" for cruisers. Like those there were many others auto selected.

I guess the aim was to empty the doubloon stashes of players that return, otherwise the captains would have simply been placed on zero selected skills.

This exactly was explained in the beginning of this change, how the change will happen and how the points will be reallocated to the skills. It was explained way before the actual change and as I mentioned, there was plenty time to make changes based on that, for free. The main reason why we didn't leave it un-allocated was, that we didn't want to just remove all skills for everybody, so plenty players would go to the battles with no skills allocated or they simply didn't want to spend time on changing every single commander. So with this they could immediately play with somehow similar-ish skills to the ones they have allocated before the change. And for those, who wanted to have all points unallocated we had the option for the "reset all skills" button.

Which bit of 'not playing at the right time' caused confusion?

I was playing at the right time, and - whilst clearly a blatant cash-grab* - I was able to work with things as they were, without trouble.

What you are trying to justify is not far from being ransomware:

  • A (paying, possibly) customer has an account with content that they - at a minimum - spent time developing (helping WG by populating the servers, at least).
  • Said customer steps back from the game for a few months (not unreasonable).
  • They return, and discover that their captains are bollixed, and they have to pay money (doubloons) to fix them before they can play effectively again.

If I were in this situation, I'd be bloody livid!

*Before you take issue with 'blatant cash-grab': the free re-sets were short-term things (and 'hidden' in news articles, rather than being automatic), and - as I recall - didn't give nearly enough time to explore suitable builds adequately; combine the inevitable mistakes made because of that with people like the OP, and the whole thing was clearly engineered to generate spend. Cash-grab.

You should've done that already when you introduced subs, each and every time. Including in Ranked.

Or when you forced superships down our throat. Including in Ranked.

The last free respec/demount was ages ago, despite the fact that you've been treating the live server, especially Ranked, as a test server for all sorts of moronic nonsense.

It is. Don't you dare say it isn't :fish_viking:

Priority target is the lousier skill for cruisers between the 2.

Well, I know at least three people now for whom exceptions were made many months after the whole disaster. Conspiracy time: Maybe exceptions are only made for people who regularly invest money or something... :Smile_hiding:

I'd like to say just one thing before I peace out.

The reason why you didn't leave the captains with unallocated points is because you didn't want players to go into battles with no skills allocated, yet if returning players are not willing to pay the extorsion then they have to go into battles with either broken commanders or brand new commanders.. which have no points allocated (or little to none). This whole reason is flawed from the get go.

Anyway I'd still like to thank you for taking the time to look into this matter.

Best of luck :)
