Tier X Ranked - What ships are best?

Hi there,

I have been playing ranked a lot recently and want to know the best lines to grind up I already have Minotaur and Marceau (from a supercontainer might i add) and I always use minotaur and do surprisingly well in it I always shred battleships with it.

Anyway I want another tier x and what would be good?

I love the supercruiser gameplay btw.

With this bearing in mind what ships are great for ranked.

Thanks,

IronMan834638

The unhelpful answer is "the one that you're best in"; for example, a lot of people seem to be keen on DM for Ranked, but I can't play her for toffee, so - for me - she'd be a lousy pick, despite being excellent for others.

FWIW I can comment on DDs, and for that class I tend to think in the following terms:

  • Smaland is excellent, but you can't get her any more, so that doesn't help.
  • After that, I find Daring to be a superior pick; she's a good DD-hunter, has defensive hydro, useful RN smoke (especially helpful if you face a CV), a healthy amount of dakka, and the single fire torps come in very handy.
  • Not a silver ship, but Vampire II got via the RB is a fine alternative to Daring.
  • Halland is usually good value (and you're presumably au fait with smokeless DDs after playing Marceau?), especially if you face a CV...

If you've found something that you're getting good results with though, I might suggest sticking with it; it's often the case that it's easier to play fluently when you use the same ship consistently over a run of battles.

Well you can just spam those and win I suppose, especially Marceau.

Soviet CA (Petropavlovsk) is pretty easy time. It's a rare cruiser that can do useful things and it's often matched against cruisers that pat themselves in the back about how much fire damage they did to a battleship.

Only really been running three ships this T10 ranked, and especially when trying to rank out in gold its important to use good ships you work well with, play the objectives and eliminate the threats quickly.
So far been running Småland, Daring and Smolensk (though not as a fire farmer, but rather as a DD escort).
Works well for me, got me some 75% wins the last 92 games with those.

IMHO, and I can speak only about DDs

hands down the Shimakaze, but this is my torpedo boat bias.

These are my season 5 stats in her.

And these are the other sips I played with success

My best performer is Shima. The Ragnar and the Marceau have very few battles on them so I guess they don't count.

This season is BB dominated in numbers, so the Wall of Skill is very productive

Venezia is probably the stronger pick imo.
If you focus on killing DDs (which Venezia does really well at), you'll notice that it's probably the biggest impact that you can have in the game in order to secure the win.
And ranked is all about winning.

Speaking as a target, it does seem to depend largely on how good the driver is, and a lot of the drivers I've faced haven't been very good.

Napoli is nasty against DDs if she can bring her firepower into play, but she's quite easy to play around (with a typical player driving her); I personally worry about radar cruisers a lot more...

Hmm what about plymouth surely radar+smoke combo is amazingly useful?

Should be a good pick.
Have only seen one so far in ranked silver, and he did well with it.
Might struggle to get into positions on the more open maps when facing good opponents though.

Again, target's perspective: she's pretty effective in good hands, but the radar range is only 9 km, which can be limiting, and you - I believe - give up some firepower to get the smoke/radar combination?

Bear in mind, she's quite fragile, and there tends to be a lot of radar in Ranked...

Ragnar

Schlieffen (just broken in this mode, imho)

Vampire 2

République (good HE, cruiser overmatch, reload)

Somers or Shima if you know what you're doing

Venezia, I imagine. Napoli might not have the opportunity to get close and use her secondaries. Without those, she's just a tankier Venezia with lower damage output.

Also: Hindenburg, as she can dumpster BBs with her improved HE penetration, plus she can brawl in the late game if necessary.

Ohio is a good generalist, but far outclassed by the Schlieffen in the brawling department, imho. She's also slow, so for instance you can't take her to the flank the way you might with a Bourgogne (or a Schlieffen, indeed...)

Shikishima is decent, too: strong overmatch against other BBs, good secondaries or AA if you build into either. Yamato is decent, as well, but her AA is just worse.

I tried and it didn't work:

1) any decent Petro, Puerto Rico or Des Moines is going to play close to the cap as well: they will light you up for easy citadels. Plymouth can't go nose in, she only has 50% of her guns at the front. And her turret arcs are awful.

2) Ranked is less chaotic than Randoms, so fewer opportunities for you to get an early DD kill

3) without HE, you have little ability to damage nose-in targets (again, those radar cruisers), and you won't smack citadels on anything with more armor than a Smolensk

4) those cruisers can bow-tank a Bourgogne, the Plymouth can't even tank a Henri IV (overmatch)

If you want a good DD hunter, play Ragnar, which can also farm BBs and cruisers at range, or something like a Vampire 2, Smaland, Z-52...

Hmm dunno then I see Salem a lot but I don't understand  why she is pretty much a Des Moines

The superheal makes her much better at nose-in fights against other cruisers, as well as surviving HE spam if she slips out of her island cover.

And hitting DDs with those lazy shells between 8.5 and 10 km is harder than it seems. Good DDs aren't going to be too affected by Des Moines radar, and bad DDs will fall for Salem radar anyway.

At least, that's the reasoning.

For a lot of folk, she's easier to get than DM is: Cosplay Graf Spee is available for coal (and I think she was an option in the Xmas boxes - I'm pretty sure I have one on my NA account via that route). So, for some people, especially in lower leagues she might easily be their only option. Besides which, if you can make her work, she's much more profitable than DM is.

Salem can be worthwhile (target's perspective again; I'm rubbish in mine): she more or less trades some radar range for a better healing potion. That said, I'd rather face Salem than DM as a DD, as the former's radar is much easier to manage...

Salem has shorter radar range, is forced to select either radar or hydro (because is stuck with DFAA), has got super heal (<very good) and can't equip the LM. However, Des Moines can slot both hydro and radar at the same time, radar is 10km (not Salem's 8.5km) and it's got a standard heal.

Except AA difference, stats-wise this is what differs. I'd say that Salem can enjoy a more selfish playstyle, thanks to the super heal. Both are very good.

Hmm what about Stalingrad

Still a pretty good ship, it's got railguns (what do you even expect?) with 20ish seconds reload; it's also got a quite ok AA; her rudder is very, very low and concealment is simply huge, but I mean, it's a battleship-sized ship after all. As a supecruiser, you don't have access to Fire Prevention anymore (<she's classified as a cruiser in-game), so you're going to burn for 60 seconds, not a very fun thing. Your reload is able to shoot 2 times at its best when your radar is up (~20s stock action time). You're stuck with a longer cooldown, weaker but longer in duration DFAA and you can't equip hydro, a useful consumable. She's also got a standard heal (<should be standard, if i recall correctly). But it's still a pretty nice ship, however, getting HE spammed will make you have a very, very fast game (applies to really anything, tbh.)

Goliath, I suppose.

She can be quite tanky (and superheal!), and her improved HE will pen the deck of a Yamato.

Well, problem is 10km Radar and BBs. So it could be a short match.
