For those in the community with gambling addictions

Now I'm sure this thread won't be open for long. But since WG have decided to shove even more loot box gambling mechanics down our throats I'm sure there are members of this community that suffer with gambling addiction.

Having an addiction is nothing to be ashamed of and there is help out there for you.

I think people should post links to gambling addiction help websites from whatever country you live in.

Remember you are not alone.

one of the problems most of the people will not see this as a gambling, especially children who have access to money.

The thing with addictions is - you can hate it, hate yourself, hate that you do it with every fibre of your being but do it anyway.

It's a sad thing.

I certainly don't have a gambling problem.

But I bet you £100 that WG will take this thread down.

There's no need to be melodramatic. Simple habits can help control gambling, just taking a pause can help. - https://www.begambleaware.org/betregret

What you think of as melodrama is reality to millions.

So much online comment is (loudly) emotionally supportive but practically useless.

Breaking addictive cycles involves getting the gambler, or the drinker, or whatever it is, to recognise when they're falling into a cycle of consumption and learning to break the habit. In doing so you break the associative buzz which the habit provides. Those of us who've given up heavy smoking are familiar with how this works, and there's often no need for the psychological breaking down and rebuilding of things like 12 step programmes, or medicalisation of a problem - people can often take the initiative for themselves with a few behavioural tweaks. That's why the "tap out" advice is helpful, it's about putting that circuit breaker in your behaviour so you're not spending money at a point of irrationality.

I was not aiming to be ''emotionally supportive'' it's what addiction was for the me of the past.

In any case, I completely disagree about it being practically useless, and if it is supportive to someone somehow then I'm glad.

People become addicted to something bad for them for different reasons.

Realising you are becoming addicted doesn't help if what is causing the addiction isn't treated, and/or people don't have the tools and mechanisms needed to cope.

Many addicts realise early on they are becoming addicted. Some take time, years even to actually come to terms with it and others accept it totally almost out of the gate and it doesn't stop them. Why? Because this is a very complicated thing, and solving or controlling it is not always so simple as recognise - then ''learn'' to break it. Depending on the addiction some can take the initiative on their own, and some of them will succeed because they are better equipped to deal, others aren't and may not.

Any support helps, and if necessary treatment. But the truth of the matter is - you will only get better not by wanting or wishing to, but intending to.

Getting to that point can be a big hurdle in and of itself.

Fair enough, but the "tap out" idea is good advice for anyone who gambles, regardless of whether they have a problem or not (or whether they recognise it or not). We're surrounded by game media which is constantly urging us to do more, spend more, not to miss out on a chance of a discount or a bargain, and the idea of a self-imposed stop/pause is a very good one to prevent problems developing or deepening. Responsible companies make this available to players - if I log on to the National Lottery in the UK I can set spend limits, time outs, the type of games I can play, and if WG is going to go down the route of gambling lootboxes and random cash bundles for every day items then it should be compelled to provide this level of control and protection for players.

That is very interesting, I had no idea this was a thing abroad.

Pretty cool. The more you know!

Can we have a post that deals with those that have a problem with those who have gambling addictions? I.e. addicted to inferring that others have an addiction? Hope you see the humour in what I said :Smile-_tongue:. If a man buys 5 random containers (or two) and then stops, is he an addict or is he an addict because he didn't do what many others do, i.e. deciding not to buy. We have to be careful in our labelling here and persecution of others, but otherwise the OP has a good point about gambling as a theme. Were WG to ever put such a notice on their site they'd be admitting it, so my presumption is they're keeping the random containers because they've learned how to do it 'legally' on a technicality of the law...which speak volumes about their attitude to people as young as 7 years old. Almost bordering on child exploitation.
