Pretty much, I am loving playing Silent Hunter 3 still, sub gameplay is wonderful in a game that is designed with submarines in mind.

I agree. Not because I think there is no place for subs in WoWs, just that I think the current iteration of Submarines is really boring and awkward. Like a bad, clumsy, destroyer.

All good shouts.

Might I also suggest Cold Waters if you like a modern-submarine game. OR (aware of displaying one's age) if you feel like playing mega-realistic-ultra-hard mode.....

Dangerous Waters - Charts. So many charts. How many hours of my life did I spend with the manual open on the desk while trying to work out what it was I was following around? How many years of my life will I never get back????!

Ahem....as you were. Carry on.

just a little guide how to have fun in subs

Step 1: lock for games Silent Hunter 3,4 / Wolfpack / UBOAT

Step 2: buy / download them

step 3 : get some optional mods for those games (subsim forums)

step 4 : enjoy subs

Wolfpack's great fun, really brings that feeling of tension when one of the escorts spot you and you're crash diving then listening out on the hydrophone to those engines getting nearer, then the splash of a depth charge being dropped.

My torpedo aiming in it absolutely sucks though.

What? They don't have pings and guided torps? How come?

Seamlessly replaced with the most advanced computer known to science. Simply set all the dials to the correct values, fire the torpedoes and then wait the 5 minutes or so that it takes to realise you've missed an entire convoy of cargo vessels travelling at 10 knots right in front of you.

However when you actually DID hit something - you actually felt like a mathematical genius. Boy it was a good feeling.

Never mind it wasn't the original ship you were aiming at..... I mean a hit was a hit.

Personal favourite was SH4 - the US sub campaign was a neat/novel direction.

Indeed so!  When you hit something, it definitely stayed hit - no amount of repair parties are getting that patched up.

  1. Find the old DOS-game called Gato
  2. Install Gato
  3. Play Gato

Fun was had... in a game meant to be about submarines.

This still imo is the best visible explanation of what a salvo of torpedo's would do irl in an optimal scenario.. Even the detonation was after all combat capability was already lost, it was a perfect hit.

Though again, not fitting in WoWs, they were laying in ambush and it was a convoy escort.. ow wait, WG could put submarines in a convoy escort / attack mode? That's an excellent idea, have a cookie :D

edit: SH4 was my favorite but it's been a long time. I should look it up, doesn't take up much space and it would be fun to play again! If I can get away from my MW5 Mercenaries and Battletech that is <3

And the people I have seen play them in ranked?

Dear god in haven.

4.5 km away trying to hit eachother with torps is a painful sight with BBs looking on laughing, with many unable to do anything about it.

Well, these are the people WG want now, those that don't know any better.

To borrow Gene Wilders line in Blazing Saddles:

SH3 with the grey wolves mod now that is a game. Never forget the time in my little sub heading home after patrol finding HMS Hood and Prince of Wales sailing to engage Bismarck and thinking to myself.

Bugger I'm out of torpedoes.
