I disagree, nationalist banter is a means of bonding for some people, particularly in international crowds. That's not having issues, unless you call social calls an issue.

It may not be your type of humor, but it's the kind of jingoist humor that Monty Python popularised by taking the piss at it.

Remember the Belgian sketch? Is that offensive to Belgians or are they laughing their arses off?

Nothing gets a nice friendly convo going more than a Belgian and Dutch sharing stereotypical jokes about one another knowing full well you need to take it with a huge can of salt. Recognising one anothers differences and being able to make light of them goes a long way to accepting and tolerating those differences.

I'm pretty sure we both know it's not friendly banter most of the time in videogame chats...

Not my experience and I've been playing competitive online games since 2004.

Most insult attempts by the mentally lesser gifted are typically sexual in nature (and then mostly about straight relationships with mothers, lack of having any relationships or with regards to paid relationships) or with regards to often mis-proclaimed competence (noob accusations).

Most racial stereotypical complaints are anti-semite, often including an arbitrary presumption of what faith you'd have. Those insults tend to come largely from specific nationalities though, which suggests a general lacking historical awareness in their education systems.

National insults are in my experience more oriented towards presumed poor communication/cooperation skills based on nationality than traditional national stereotypes (particular targets are countries with a track record of lacking English education, like Poland, Czech, Germans and French) and those insults are simply naming frustration with the nationality and their inability to coordinate efficiently in an international (read: English) language environment, rather than attributing or alluding to racist traits or making use of slurs.

So no, I'm not inclined to expect an intentional derogatory/insult intending context with these traditional slurs as most people who use these do so in clear jest and witty response provocation.

In the end it comes down to context, or lack thereof. Starting from the fact that written language prunes away intonation (hence the creation of emojis in order to bring some replacement for it to informal internet chat), add on top the multiple meanings (and/or functions within a sentence, with English being particularly egregious at that) a word can have (even worse when including slang) and you get the perfect storm. No language is safe from that, though:

To be fair, it's not automated systems' fault, nor their programmers': leaving aside the aforementioned limitations of written language, plenty of people appear to have either never learnt properly, lost in the course of time or willfully thrown away both their knowledge in their own language (not to mention when it's a foreign one) and ability to detect nuances. People then go by the common meaning and connotations the word has within their own place and timeframe references with a pure black or white mentality, and outrage ensues.

Salute.

Bah, most will have fond memories when a Dutch person was seen as a kaskop and not, as today, a methhead... with NL turning into a Colombia-style narco state, just with worse food and a horrible language. :Smile_trollface:

Seems I have to change my starting phrase when taking my Panasian ships for a ride, as I usually refer to my Golden Rooster (Flag) swaying happily in the winds... while I of course use the other word for rooster... and from now on will use the other word for happily...

:Smile_trollface:

Would also be interesting to know if I would be allowed to insult people from poland, with my ancestors having been coming from quite close to the russian border in the 1870's (or so) making me partial pole (not sure if north or south..) anyway. And as I was being born a german I could insult in both directions, I guess?!?

You have a foodstuff that specifically affects only one gender? How odd.

We need an area with this warning notice:

Do you people at WG know what LGTBQHLBTKXI etc. stands for??????? I dont, but word GAY is there for sure. And for sure people who identify themselves by those letters dont get offended by that.

Every time I saw somebody using the word "gay" in Wows chat it was meant in a negative way. Every single time. Also in OPs example. Why does he use that word? He doesn't even recognize how he puts other people down. Chat ban is totally justified IMO.

Automated chat bans are just because WG can tick some box somewhere and not spend people resources with brains to actually look at chat logs.

There are so many stupid people in the world that gets offended by anything. Its the dicatorship of the easily offended - the same reason why we cannot have nipples on instagram because some people think its offensive, least common nominator as anywhere else, so we end up in a society where nothing is allowed and nobody dares to speak up because they are afraid to be called out. 1984 is here people.

its the way children are brought up in todays world. Pu**ies.

I guess it takes some amount of insecurity to get offended by a word. Basically any word can be used as an insult, so lets disable chat for all and be done with it.

I know big spenders are called whales, but OP-s example is not about those people.

Given the way the Russian players on the PTS complain bitterly if you kill them or even dare shoot at them, I do have to wonder what their chat ban rates are like.

Is there enough supply of cocoa beans for that?

After all, blokes can do a lot of dumb stuff.

Wait, I thought this was about British food - we're the masters of that.

Reminds me of Sanjeev Bhaskar's sketch about a group of Indian friends going to an English restaurant and daring each other to have the "Blandest thing on the menu"
