Cunningham vs Yoshino - I don't like either much. Yoshino seem to be boring and is yet another long range HE spammer with little other use. No sneaky play, no ambushes, no brawling and so on. I'm also not a collector and don't need to have ships just for sake of owning them. Cunningham doesn't seem to have much value other than cool colored tracers. The "Enhanced Skill" (only one where other commanders have two) is completely useless (literally) since the rework and WG gives a crap about it. I have 21pt Dunkirk already and a bunch of 19-20 pt RN commanders, so there is no real urgent need for yet another commander.

 

There is nothing else in the Armory that i need or would be interested in and new releases will be foreseeable disappointments too, so there is no point in saving up coal at this point. It is also very possible that this will be my last purchase for coal, because i'm VERY tempted to completely quit the game once Subs, Italian Cruisers and more Hybrid ships hit the live server - i'm a DD main and guess which class suffers the most with all these new "great" additions to the game. But this is different topic.

If i were you i would hold on the the coal until you know how fun/unfun hunting Submarines is.

 

Maybe it is more fun then you had in a long time and WG is putting special DD with more effective hedgehogs, DC mortars and what not up for coal.

 

Btw : Yoshino has extreme high damage unicums....in the right hands that is a monster, in the wrong hands something that explodes early in the match. Cunningham has usable traits, but it will enrage you to learn they are especially helpful to firesetting mechanic ships of most UK classes. And since most UK ships are pyromanic based, it is realistic to proc in a match which reduces relaoding by 10 %. He is very attractive for UK CV too with multiple buffs for them...but i know you dont care about that.

I'd wait personally. Hoping Napoli is either Coal or FXP so I'm not spending either till WG says what currency she is..

I find that especially after the rework, captains are a good choice. I might like to get the Yoshino eventually, but nothing in the armory interests me, really. So I got Cunningham (and of course Kuznetsov) and I'll probably get the rest of them too.

I'm pretty much in your same situation, at least since I "won" the auction: 250k coal to spare and the only ship different enough to entice me is the Neustrashimy...or the Z-44, because I enjoy trolling myself a challenge.

 

I was going to suggest the Salem, which I got in anticipation of resetting USN CAs and has been a strong performer for me so far, but since the Des Moines is already your second-most played ship, maybe you've had enough of that playstyle, I dunno...

 

There's also the option to spend it on Papa Papa flags (with each coupon renewal) to farm more free xp.

Let's say, 240k coal, 6.4k for 20 flags, but coupons are for -25% and -50% discounts, so either 3.2k or 4.8k, average 4k...

...so 240k/4k * 20 = 1200 flags, which can bring in the order of 1-2M free xp, depending on WR, camo, premium time and other flags.

That's 2-3 full resets on the cheapest line (Harugumo), so depending on the bonus maybe 30k Research Bureau points, or halfway to an Ohio, if you're into that.

How so? Especially Cunningham was butchered and nerfed to the ground. He used to have 2 Enhanced Skills, now he has one and this one is literally useless because it buffs consumables only and the kind of consumables that aren't even available on the ships. Like spotting planes and torpedo reload for DDs. Really?! But this goes for all classes, there is only one buff (out of the 5 it theoretically would buff) that works on some ships - for the other 95% of the cases it's completely useless. But all unique commanders were nerfed to crap, except -of course- the russian one who always was and still is by far the strongest commander in the game.

 

The only reason why Cunningham might be interesting for me personally is, that i like colored tracers and i have pretty often multiple kill games, so his special skill would trigger often for me. And as a DD main his second special skill (2 floodings) would activate rather often.

The only commanders that might be worth the coal price are

Kutnetzov: will to victory talent. His enhanced skills were nerfed

 

and

Lutjens: He is great on cruisers, destroyers and carriers. If you have lots of premiums he can be very useful.

I find this one goes off a lot with typical RN DD play, and the coloured tracers are splendid.

 

That said, Yoshino can be useful for farming HE/Fire missions, although you've presumably got no shortage of options for that already?

 

'Wait' is probably the sensible answer, if Yoshino isn't really doing it for you (and you've got all the other fun coal options)...

Cunningham is far from useless....on UK CV :Smile_teethhappy:

 

But be real this guy on pyromaniac UK BB and heavy Cruisers.....how hard is it to achieve witherer ? -10 % reload is nice to have on top of other skills. And for DD he has good stuff too as they can flood and burn stuff, just like most UK CV.

Right now I'm stock piling coal.

 

2 reasons.

 

1. Possible new and wanted coal ship (This is based on pure conjecture)

2. A method to keep getting flags that doesn't rely on cash. (This is based on mathematics)

There are at least three T10 ships in development, Napoli, Druid and Ragnarok. I guess that at least one of them will be for coal. But if you really want to spend your coal, between Yoshino and Cunningham, I would go with Cunningham. While his enhanced skills are nerfed, his unique trait ...

It's a great fast reloading torp bote 65 sec reload 12 km fast torps (72 knts? I forgot), it's kind of relaxed actually. And fun :-) Someone called it a poor mans benham, which made me insta buy it lol. By the time you hit something with your torps, they almost ready for a new launch :D

 

Here you go, I have some vids on it. My 1st and 3d match in it.

Ok, some background would have been in order here, you're right. I am strictly free-to-play and I don't put up with WG's greedy BS. This means I don't move captains anymore. At all. No respecs. So, any "extra" skills that I can use on multiple premiums (they made it so one premium captain can have different skills for each class of ship) are valuable to me. Certainly more than Marco Polo (lol) or Pommern. I'd get Marceau, but I'm crap at DDs, so... captains it is!

Both Yoshino and Cunningham seem a bit meh to me. I'm thinking about that German boinky-boinky-boinky CV. :cap_hmm:

But I have FDR as well, and well, all other T10 CVs - how much "better" (more toxic... .OP... you name it...) could this be? 

Would it be able to perform stuff that the others cannot do? Like, will it get underwater blastablappers or whatever when we get subs? 

 

I'd just wait and sit on the coal. Because as @Beastofwar says, they might just give you (DD main, right) that submarine destroyer.

Halland/Smaland-on-steroids with a zillion depth charges, or something. Paolo Yolo Scrubmarinekiller. There's bound to be something by that time.

Im split between Marco Polo and Immelman. I play less and less BBs and have vever played hightier CVs. Could save the next coupon for syeel ship but i dot thonk i can get 10k steel before xmas.

Marco Polo is great. I find it funny how overated are some of older coal ship (Jean Bart, Georgia), while Marco Polo is not a bit worse than them
