What are your thoughts on the duke of york?

I am thinking of buying it right now I have 20,000 coal and I will continue to save

Dont play the tier. That said, having hydro is majorly annoying to dds in bronze of ranked, so if you like to play that, go for it.

DoY is massively worse than KGV, her techtree sister, with her only advantage being having access to Hydroacoustic Search. I definitely prefer Nelson over both of them, though.

Once you get overmatched trough bow by the big boys you might wanna hate the ship.

I like it. We all know KGV deserves a reload nerf. Or DoY a reload buff. More of the latter than the former.

The ship has some issues with accuracy. You might see the shells falling weirdly.

 

When all is said and done, DoY is a solid ship. The Hydro is really good and the improved AP angles can troll people who think they are angling properly.

But it's more of an acquired taste, because all other T7 RN BBs outperform her.

It's a good ship just a shame the MM is arse at tier 7 now, you will face tier 9 80% of the time and all praise the overmatch, such a good game design decision that, and not to forget all the HE that will murder you without being able to angle

DoY has 2 notable bonuses vs KGV:

1. Hydro that was already mentioned

2. Improved AP bounce-check angles

 

Then she has bit bitter AA & Heal that heals back upto 75% of normal pen damage value

 

In exhange DoY has:

A) 4,5s slower MB reload

B) No access to plane, so no range boost flexibility or (almost useless) fighers

 

As a ship, DoY is good cruiser bruiser but suffers from being T7 & having same Dreadful firing angles as KGV.

It's okay, I got my 5th Kraken w/ her....but if you're buying her for ranked... then DON'T. I made a mistake buying her. You can save a few stars and try to carry your team but doesn't change that the new ranked is plagued by mindless suicide bots and cavemen who don't even have the courtesy to use camos and signals on their naked stock ships.

Marceau,  just for the thrill of being able to outrun every ship on the battlefield. With speed boost on and zig-zag maneuvering, you're practically untouchable. CLs will struggle to hit you even as they barrage you with endless spam.

IDK...maybe watch some playthroughs on yt and buy the one that you'd feel most comfortable in.

in normal games, random / co-op, you likely won't have this much fun. Maybe in Operations (Narai!)...

 

You may want to check the English review of DoY by LittleWhiteMouse - looking on the Wiki ship pages and reviews is always a sensible thing to do (for: BB, cruisers, DD, CV), even if some texts feel somewhat outdated.

 

I learned to stay away from T7 outside of this Ranked season, as there's only 2 tiers where you get the guarantee of not getting uptiered by 2 steps : T4 and obviously T9. Game economics then dictate to play dominantly T9 and a bit of T8...

This is the main issue I have with DoY after the brit BB citadel nerfs.

 

I still take mine out for narai, but DoY is definitely not a primary pick at all anymore. Will still play DoY if there is a 200% but I prefer any of my other t7 premium BBs over DoY now.

That review is obsolete now though. DoY got slapped big time with the brit citadel nerfs, she eats citadels from all angles when not top tier which makes the extra heal mostly useless except against HE spam perhaps.

Pommern. There are few BBs available for Coal these days but the big German is fun. Although... you might want to play the Tech Tree line up to Bismarck first to get the general idea.

Imho she's a pretty good ship:

 

- forget about the hydro, which is mostly for self-defense against torps, as the ship acquisition range is a meagre 4 km

- she's got the best AA of all the T7 British BBs

- the AP angles are very nice against cruisers and same-tier BBs

- the reload is bad, but not stupidly bad like an Oklahoma's, for instance

 

Her main problem is her crappy armor, particularly her huge bow: it's very hard to carry in such a ship because in the late game, when you can't hope to catch distracted enemies broadside, you're far less tanky than an angled Sinop, North Carolina, or even just a Bayern. You get overmatched and you can't overmatch back.

 

Both Nelson and Hood are more unique: I got the DoY because of her history, but I barely player her. I wouldn't get it as my first "expensive" coal purchase.

 

Also...I'll be honest with you: you're basically a beginner and you've barely played T7 so far, so I wouldn't recommend a ship that is so fragile.

Duke of York s a fine ship, she was my favorite in the current ranked bronze. She does not have Nelson’s super heal, but has an improved British heal, and lot’s of HP that compensate her weaker armor scheme. Also, the AP is great with improved angles and the manoeverability is good. In fact Nelson usually can’t fully benefit from her superheal mid to end game, as she eats citadels and torps more easily and that cannot be healed back.

 

Considering that you have about 250 battles in total, she’s a good ship for you to do ranked bronze and Narai. Don’t aim for a T9 or T10, as your first coal ship. You’re not yet prepared for that and it takes much more time to grind enough coal for T9. 

 

Here is my recent ranked game with Duke where I survived 125k damage and was on the top of the score board:

I ranked out in 23 games of which 5 was with the Duke, providing 4 wins. Also seen a purple guy sailing her.
