Fun Fact of the Day: Material of Pennies in 1943

During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort (to make shell casings) that the U.S. penny was made out of steel that year, which is why most 1943 pennies are silver colored. They are worth about 12 to 15 cents each in ciruclated condition, and as much as 50 cents or more if Uncirculated.

Fun Fact of the Day: Origin of the Name "French Fries"

As for the name "French fries", it is alleged to come from either the Irish "to french", meaning "to cut", or from the American allies who, when they landed in the Belgian Ardennes, tasted incomparable fried potatoes and called them "French fries"

Fun Fact of the Day: Human Nails growing speed

The nail of the index finger grows faster than that of the little finger; and fingernails grow up to four times faster than toenails. In humans, nails grow at an average rate of 3 mm (0.12 in) a month. Fingernails require three to six months to regrow completely, and toenails require 12 to 18 months.

Fun Fact of the Day: Trees

Fun fact of the Day: Why does water with salt boil faster ?

If you look at the heat capacity of salt water, you will find that it is less than pure water. In other words, it takes less energy to raise the temperature of the salt water 1°C than pure water. This means that the salt water heats up faster and eventually gets to its boiling point first.

Fun fact of the Day: Moon

The moon was formed ~4.5 billion years ago, about 30–50 million years after the origin of the Solar System, out of debris thrown into orbit by a massive collision between a smaller proto-Earth and another planetoid, about the size of Mars.

Fun fact of the Day: When does the brain stop growing?

We used to think that the brain was fully developed by very early teenagerhood and we now realise that the brain doesn't stop developing until mid-20s or even early 30s. There's a lot more information and evidence to suggest that actually brain development in various forms goes on throughout the life span.
