UK BB Split ideas with Premiums

Following on from the Alternate US BB Split suggestions the UK one, which is more detailed and better thought out than my original iteration. Fully welcome any criticisms/suggestions or improvements, but lets keep it a civil discussion.

Please note I'am basing Concealment & Turning Circle off of the sizes of ships so if one of the listed ships have better/worse concealment to other same tier counterparts its due to said ship either being larger/smaller than her counterparts, Hit Points are also being based off of ship displacement - the larger the displacement the more HP hence some ships listed may have more/less HP than the same tier counterparts has, other stats are being based around similar/sister ships already in-game if applicable, AA Average Damage is being worked out using similar ships AA in game for example say one ship in game has 4 x 2 3.9 inch (100 mm) AA guns with an average damage of 70 and one on this list has 10 x 1 3.9 inch (100 mm) I'll take the 4 x 2 3.9 inch (100 mm) I'll take the 70 divide it by 4 to give the average damage for one of the twin mounts in this case that would be 17.5 then I'll divide that by 2 to give the average damage of one of the guns in this case that would be 8.75 then times that by the 10 for the 10 x 1 3.9 inch (100 mm) which gives a total of 87.5 average damage for the 10 x 1 3.9 inch (100 mm) AA Guns. << Just to clarify that is just an example.

P.S. - Fair warning there will be a lot of writing to read I'll to my best to include a TL:DR for the tech tree ships changes from stock to fully upgraded, but plenty of photos. - And dependant on how I feel after getting to the end of these 2 nations and how bored I still am being locked indoors I may put a few ideas forward for some Premium Battleships/Battlecruisers for other nations, and perhaps a crude attempt at an Italian BB line, these suggestions will most likely not be 100% the best choices/accurate stats but this is only a basic outline I have going and even announced ships still have to have their stats tweaked, if anyone can tell me a better ship over another ship with a good reason behind it etc, do tell and I will make corrections where needed - and if you know of other ships/designs do tell I enjoy finding out about new ships and designs so go for it. :)

Also like the US BBs I own none of the photos of any of these ships listed below the photos of each of them are found online - all rights to the respective owners.

T7 - HMS Anson (Laid Down - 1916) - (Anson with a Hood like 1940 spin - Stock & Resemble the possible Renown Style of Hood's planned Rebuild - Fully Upgraded) (Admiral Class)

Comparison to Hood and what her not completed sister HMS Anson may have looked like - Please no comments on 'oh Hood's armour was weak etc'. its just not true she was one of the most well protected ships in the fleet with similar levels of armour to the QE class & as completed she was in all regards other than speed a Battleship so its safe to say her sisters would have been completed to a similar standard, she just got unlucky, being hit when and where she was - and it was not a deck pen she was too close for that - but I digress this is not a Hood topic.

AA Defence:

- Victoria's QF 6 pounder guns would also act as AA but at Tier 2 she would never be put in a situation outside training battles where she will face any threat from aircraft and thus would be pointless, a waste of time and a waste of space to list them and their stats. -

T3 - HMS Indefatigable (1911) (1916 Config) & HMAS Australia (1913) - (Commonwealth Tree) - Indefatigable Class Battlecruiser - Below HMS Indefatigable with White Star Lines RMS Olympic (sister to the Titanic) - Olympic sure got around with the Warships of her day - was accidentally rammed by the cruiser HMS Hawke, was photographed with the Indefatigable, tried to take the damaged and sinking King George V (1911) class battleship HMS Audacious under tow after she had stuck a mine - however the tow line eventually failed, attempts to re-attach it were abandoned when it failed again - Olympic launched her lifeboats to take all non-essential crew off the Audacious, Audacious eventually capsized, floated upside-down for a bit and then an explosion occurred near what seemed to be B magazine and the ship sank, only 1 person was killed an officer on HMS Liverpool (1910) when a piece of wreckage from Audacious when she exploded hit him, Olympic later served as a troopship in WW1 and sunk enemy U-boat SM U-103 by ramming after the 6 inch deck guns she was fitted with in WW1 were unable to get an angle on the sub - Olympic is the only passenger ship to this day to have sunk an enemy sub on her record she was also the only one of the 3 Olympic Class ships (Olympic, Titanic & Britannic) to not sink - Britannic was mined in WW1 while serving as a Hospital Ship, she rolled to starboard and sank in 55 minuets.

T7 HMS Valiant (02) (1944 Config) Queen Elizabeth Class Battleship < Hear me out on putting her at T7 not T6 like her sisters: in her 1944 config she would have better AA than QE (which is in her 1937 - 1940 state and not her 1943 - 1945 state) in this state she would however lack the catapult (removed in 1943 - more AA added). She could still work at T7 on other factors compared to other T7 RN BBs - I'll being using Hood as a reference, the QE Class and Hood had very similar armour the QE's belt was only 1 inch thicker, the deck of the 3 rebuilt QEs post rebuild was about 5 inches, the Hood's 3 armoured decks = about 7-8 inches, in-game she would have Warspite's performance on her guns & her shells including the standard fuse timer, faster turret rotation than both QE and Warspite and increased AA defence (stronger than Hood's AA). Being a shorter hull than Hood she would also have a shorter turning circle making her more nimble than Hood, yes slightly slower but still a decent speed at 24 knots. She would also have slightly increased HP to the QE to account for the higher tier.

T8 - King George V Preliminary - one of the original envisioned gun layouts - 12 - 14 inch guns in 3 quad mountings - this was changed to 2 quad & 1 twin 14 inch turrets to have the desired armour - having the 3rd quad turret would mean armour would have had to be reduced to keep within treaty tonnage limits. I'm stuck between names for this one - HMS Beatty (After Admiral Beatty), Jellicoe (After Admiral Jellicoe), King Edward VIII (After King Edward VIII) - (Also I think I recall reading somewhere that Beatty was one of the names put forward for what became Howe, Jellicoe another name for what ended up being named Anson and King Edward VIII another name put forward for what became the Prince of Wales - not sure how true that is so don't quote me on that), or maybe HMS Paddlin' comes with Mighty Jingles Commander. Below an edit someone has made to make it resemble this design from bow on. - the Monarch represents the other Preliminary design of 3 x 3 15 inch guns.

There are loads more ships I could pick for premiums and I've got a few lined up such as:

T3 HMS Superb (1907)

T3 - HMS Collingwood (1908)

T3 HMS Invincible

T5 HMS Tiger

-T5 HMS Princess Royal (1912)

T5 HMS Erin (being in both the UK & Pan-EU tree as Erin (UK) & Reşad V (Pan-EU) she was being built for the Ottoman Empire by Britain, at the start of WW1 she was seized by Britain and completed for service in the RN being renamed HMS Erin

T5 HMS Canada (1913) (being in both the UK & Pan-American tree as Canada (UK) & Almirante Latorre (Pan-America) Almirante Latorre during construction in the UK was purchased from Chile for use with the RN in WW1, she was later resold to Chile in 1920, - fun fact Almirante Latorre was to have a sister ship (Almirante Cochrane) while Britain was building her they purchased her from Chile, she was converted to an Aircraft Carrier and named HMS Eagle (1918)

T5 HMS Marlborough

T5 HMS Audacious (1912 - the KGV class of 1911 that sunk after striking a mine on gunnery exercises - attempted to be taken under tow but White Star Lines Ocean Liner RMS Olympic the lead ship of the Olympic Class Ocean Liners & older sister to the famous RMS Titanic.)

T6 HMS Ramillies (07)

And a few designs: T8: K2, LII, L2. T9: M3, I3, T10: LIII & K3

^ If anyone has any suggestions about these or would like to see them listed with stats I'll create stat list for them with pic like the other listed ships, and if anyone wants to have a crack at forming the stats by all means go for it.

suggestions welcomed.

Sorry for the long list, there aren't as many premium UK ships as the US despite the UK being the larger navy at the time so would be nice to see more added in.

Italian Tree ideas and other nations extra premiums on the way.

I have to compliment you on the effort, work and research that went into this, and also avoiding the current trend of trying to list classic battlecruisers as high tier cruisers. But I'm not seeing the hook on the lines.

Much like the RN CA line they appear to be balanced, but without something that gives them a space in the game, and that line is now essentially dead despite being one of the newest.

Take your first T10 for instance, no consumables, 1.8 sigma, 5km secondaries. If I use the Vanguard as an example, that is a ship with the same limited tool set, but with the added bonuses of better accuracy and being real, and that is still hugely unpopular, It just doesn't inspire a 'I need this ship because of *that*' thought. A ship with a superheal and nothing else may be balanced, but what's the hook? Take the Lion, no consumables, 1.8 sigma, 5km secondaries, and noone plays it, it just isn't rewarding. Where's the potential for builds or roles in competitive... Earlier ships had DefAA which was at least something different for a BB and might give the T8 a role... It would just be a shame for so much work to go in for people to look at the line and just think 'Nah, I already have the Monarch/Lion/Conq and I don't use them anymore anyway'.

Trying to be constructive, not dismissive so please don't take any of that as an insult, I would love to see many of these ships in the game. Oh and currently the game has the 5.25 long range AA aura as 5.2>6km.

First off I have to say to OP that's an impressive amount of work and over all I do like the idea of making a second battleship line as well as a battlecrusier line. It's always irritated me that the British tech tree BBs are so HE focused so an alternative line that's not so dependant on HE would be very welcome. As would your suggestion for a refitted Admiral class battleship as Hood should have been given.

I would be curious to see the N3, G3 and L3 brought to life in game although I can imagine the G3 in particular being a real pain to play with the large rear superstructure (HE spammers will love to shoot it).

Lots of interesting ideas here, thanks for putting it all down for us to read!

If I might add a couple of ideas..

I think the @The_White_Whale is right in the sense that the line needs a hook, a clear purpose. This is especially true above Tier VII, where "slightly better KGVs" don't really make the grade in the face of everyone else's fantasy projects. If the Iowa class - the classic fast battleships -  look mediocre at Tier IX what hope do the Brits have?

A battlecruiser based line, working on speed. mobility and heavy guns, works fine up to Tier VII. We've seen how ships like Monarch, Odin and the Russian BBs can have their reload and traverse tweaked to provide balance (from 25-35 seconds) so perhaps some of that could allow us to get ships like the Revenge Class. And as you say, a focus on AP over HE would be a nice contrast to the current line.

So, if it were me....

Tier II - Canopus. Similar to Mikasa (which was based on the British Formidable class, the successor to Canopus). Purely here for the history.

Tier III - Invincible

Tier IV - Lion (Premium: Queen Mary)

Tier V - Tiger (Premium: Revenge Class with a long 35 second reload)

Tier VI - Repulse (Premium: Renown)

Tier VII - Anson (Duke of York proposal style BC with a limited, but powerful heal)

Tier VIII - Temeraire (Lion class with 406s on a long reload) / (Premium: KGV with a 3 x 4 layout and Monarch reload)

Above Tier IX, I think you have to take your cues from the G3 and N3 designs, but with secondary armament and AA which is based on the proposed revisions to HMS Nelson; which essentially meant taking out all the UK designed 6 inch and 4.5 inch guns and replacing with with US 5 inch twin turrets and *squillions* of Bofors guns. Not a pompom in sight.

Names? Ships from the line of battle at Trafalgar: Defence, Leviathan, Belleisle, Colossus, Britannia, Mars.

Awsome work and large ammount of effort! Although I have strange feeling that split could only take place from TV or more possible from TVIII, so unfortunately all ealier constructions are less possible. All we also see that WG "loves so much" low tier ships and makes everything to force players to play high tiers :Smile_sad:

I wonder how N3 and G3 designs could work in game as their angles of main guns seems to be showing too much of side ( definitely more than it's needed on Nelson ) This should be soluted in some way - in example as citadel only covering space beyond turrets leaving stern more protected as no citadel? They are unique and due to this they should be included in game but I'm afraid that some game mechanics could punish them very hard.

Courageous as TV could be interesting but she is one of this cases of ships which could be only absolute garbage or P2W with lesser possibility to being something normal. I'm scptic about her.

Only one secondary battery based ship? Personally I very like designs of RN battleships ( I have all of them in port ) and I very much want to see some mid tier RN BB with strong secondary ( troll build of Warspite for Operations I leave as I use her for fun and it's probably not the best utility for her ) Maybe Valiant as more secondary based? TVII so all benefits will be possible to get.

Very impressive work OP, must have taken a lot of time and effort to put together! It's good to see some famous ships that are entirely AWOL from the game currently getting some recognition, as well as representation for the dreadnought classes that are currently missing (particularly the Revenge class, although it would likely take a bit of imagination to make them properly comparable to the QEs at the same tier).

Victoria would not be my choice for T2 premium however: she's just too early-generation a ship to fit in with everything else in the game for one; a two-gun main battery with the kind of dispersion, rate of fire and range required to be in any way historical would also be rather unrewarding to play (exactly half as much as Mikasa in fact); and there are far better exemplars of 19th-century British battleships from both gameplay and historical perspectives, I would suggest a Majestic as most historically significant or perhaps a King Edward VII for the interest of a mixed secondary battery (the 9.2" could fire AP shells for added variety). Lord Nelson would be an interesting T3 premium, with the better guns and heavier secondaries compared to Mikasa making her more comparable to first-generation dreadnoughts (which she had some important advantages over in terms of protection scheme and watertight subdivision).

To be honest, I don't really want to see any more famous RN ships become meh-boats in WoWS.

Teabos are not on the WoWS marketing priority list, so the chances are that new ships will just come in as baseline content, saddled with "real life" characteristics vs, the "arcade" characteristics of other lines.

First - as others said - great job with the amount of detail and some interesting ideas. My feedback:

- rather than making it a parallel line we should rework the RN BBs to change their stats to follow the Warspite and Thunderer theme.

- the split should indeed be the Battlecruisers which could take over the HE Gimmick which I would remove from the main line and additionally speed and spood beest. This line should also contain the J3 and G3 projects you suggested

- Premiums - sure. However we have already plenty, more than I regularly play. Nevertheless I wouldn’t say no to Repulse

RN Premiums need to offer something different, in the way that Warspite, Hood and Nelson do.  I do think that the RN would have adopted a 16in gun calibre for WW2 BBs and that this isn't really reflected in the game (A Hull Lion, isn't it?) - they could definitely do something with that at Tier VII to give the RN similar punch to the Soviets and US BBs. A 3 x 2 16 inch BC with a similar hull form to Hood at Tier VII, or perhaps a slow reload Lion at VIII? I would also suggest a further development of the "large cruiser" lineage of Courageous et al - but then we have Georgia, and isn't that pretty much all you can do with those?

Well for supercruisers you can just give them heavier guns up to 350's and make them doubles or even quads. For tier 7 you could have another 406mm ship with KGV hull with double turret barrel turrets and give her either gud accuracy compared to KGV and better AP performance.

For tier 8 could do a 406mm monarch of somekind and maybe make it more secondary orientated as well.

No insult taken, and very good constructive points, any suggestions to make them more appealing is always welcomed :) I'd say Renown is one of the more appealing for the fact of the amount of AA being similar to that of an Iowa at T7.

Good points you make, those ship suggestions look like good editions, like the Canopus for the history the Victoria is for being the only vertical shipwreck. Also fun fact about the Iowa's they weren't actually very good seaboats, in anything but flat calm they had to sail at slower speed, whereas Vanguard was an excellent seaboat managing to maintain max speed in most weathers, take a look at photos of an Iowa in rough seas the bow is almost underwater completely where as Vanguard is high and dry. :)

You are probably correct about where the split would take place but its nice to wish lol :). N3 and G3 would probably very rarely use all guns as it would be high risk but having a below water Citadel may help there.

Courageous I struggled with, too few guns on too long a hull to be a high tier cruiser, and too higher calibre for T4. As for the secondary spec ship, I thought I added more than one as such oops, plus I didn't want to over crowed the game with secondary ships, I can go and edit some to be such, just give me your thoughts of which ships to do so to :)

It would have taken less time if I kept remembering to continue it lol but I'd hazard a guess at for all of them US/UK/IT/all the other nations in one probs a few weeks, for just the UK line a few days on and off, the AA was probably the hardest bit to assemble. The R class probably the most underrated Battleship Class, they would be similar to the QE's as they were very similar classes IIRC they had slightly less range than the QE's. I picked Victoria purely for being the only vertical wreck. The suggestions you put forward do look to be better choices, its would be great if they created game modes for other eras (or even separate games) imagine a game similar to WoWs but with Age of Sail vessels like HMS Victory with WoWs graphics.

I doubt the line would be reworked like that, I wouldn't exactly complain I love the Warspite and Thunderer, Warspite has the edge being joint favourite with the Hood.

I doubt BCs would get a separate line in game when they can be added in as BBs and when the only nations that could benefit from them would be Germany and the UK, again I'd love a BC line - Hood would remain a BB as that is really what she was.

If they were to add Repulse is an instant gimmie now, PoW too, Renown in her rebuilt state is just a great looking ship as well as when she was first commissioned, fun fact: Renown's war record rivals the Warspite with IIRC the same amount of Battle Honours, also by wars end she was in basically perfect condition and was still the fastest Capital Ship in the fleet (32.58 Knots)

The G3 would be like Izumo with that #3 turret I world imagine, and a HE magnet.

HE magnet mostly depends on plating which is set by WG without any foundation in the actual designation as far as I know:

G3 is a well protected and fast ship. But she has Nelson guns + shells (or actually Nelson has G3 guns). Unless WG “invents” a heavy shell she wouldn’t be impressive AP firepower-wise.

But hey - she looks much more badass than Izumo

I wonder if changing her to a secondary spec ship would work or playing with the guns, making them rotate faster or reload faster, any Ideas?

Of course she looks more badass than Izumo she has a Tea factory on board, a mod need to be created that changes the shell visuals of British ships to tea bags.

Not really. For 40.6cm Guns these rifles were pretty bad.

If you go the BCs designs why incorperate early and have HMS Tiger and the bunch before her at lower tir and replace Revenge with Renown?

Seems overall Strange to switch between G and N designs plus werent tehre quite some diferent turet setups and calibers between them anyhos to fill t8-10?

good enough to get the job done, and equal to the IJN guns

Have to admit, that's a pretty good reason to include it! Although apparently they recently found a Russian monitor in a similar position possibly on the back of a napkin ;)

The R-class had the same armament as the QEs (and actually a slightly better protection scheme/watertight subdivision layout initially), but in a lot of other ways they were inferior: they were several knots slower, somewhat smaller in dimensions, used coal instead of oil fuel as laid down, and instead of tapering armour they had flat plates which (together with the smaller size) apparently made them virtually useless for the kind of refitting that some of the QEs got, to the point that by WWII they were still largely stuck with their WWI specifications.

I would seriously love if they did alternate historical periods for WoWs; off the top of my head a Dreadnought-era (1900-1918, to encompass some of the previous ships); a mid-to-late 19th-century (Warrior to 1900, give or take), an 18th/early 19th-century and a 16th/17th-century setting would all have their attractions!

And you are basing this claim on what? And what do you mean by “good enough”? These guns were inferior to other 16” guns in many ways

Even the IJN 41cm gun was better. Nelson’s Guns had many issues (eg. poor accuracy) which the following Lion Guns tried to overcome. One of the big topics was shell speed and weight - for which the RN went back to their normal RN practice with Lion’s Guns. With the Nelson guns the RN tried to copy the successful WW1 German gun concept but didn’t succeed really.

Nelson’s Guns are hardly better than the proven 38cm L42 pieces then in service by most RN capital ships.

However - if WG creates different shells it may not be an issue in game

Werent most of Nelsons Gun Problem mainly due to the lightly build Turets to keep her to Treaty limitations? and werent they fixed pre war? Cant rememer reading anything of her or Rodney having isues during the war.

That piece I don’t know but I would assume that would more be the case on the KGVs.

The issue with Nelson’s Guns was that the RN copied the German Concept Of light shell high velocity guns. However they didn’t strike a balance unlike the guns they tried to copy. The Nelson gun suffered from high barrel wear, poor accuracy and low penetration as far as I know. Therefore the RN considered them a failure and went back to their “own” principles with the following designs.

Nelson couldn’t even punch through a roughly 350mm belt at point blank - a serious testament to the inabilities of said guns
