I don't know how some players are able to advance, honestly, I don't. I am an average player, and I have carried my fair share of matches. My max number of ships sunk in one battle is 7. But how much difference can one person make, really? Esp when saddled with potato team after potato team, who won't even communicate with each other? These days, almost every match is a squash match, with one side or the other (usually the other) annihilating everything in its path. Sometimes (more rarely), the teams are evenly matched. I am finding more and more that one team or the other is loaded up with players of higher rank. Which, of course, skews the odds massively in their favour. Every time I try to play a DD because I don't want to sit in Q for 5 minutes with Massa I get dumpstered on by rocket planes. The CV mentality seems to be that once they found a DD they will not stop coming. Especialy Shokaku players just send wave after wave of rocket planes. And there is literaly nothing you can do about it. WG has made the CV the literal gods of this game. It's such a shame, the art department makes all these beatifull models and the game developers then proceed to go and crap all over that work. A chimpansee could do a better job at developing this game than the current russian monkeys in St Petersburg. Guess anyone with some computer skill in russia is allready working for Putin, so WG has to scrape the bottom of the barrel for developers. I start from rank 10 and steadily go up now. Funny thing,everybody suggest Massa for ranked but Massa is such pathetic threat for Shokaku that is beyond easy to sink them. Especially with AP bombs which cit them easy. And good luck to any DD which find itself in game with Shokaku on other side. More steel would certainly be nice (at the current rate, I'll probably get Somers around 2035), but above R10, Ranked gets very much - for me anyway - into spectacularly diminishing returns territory. When your team is bad then its because a lot of bad players are playing it. This means the enemy team is also full of potatoes. So its much easier to shine for better players.
