My first thought was "Oh, somewhere here must be one of those irradiated Soviet submarine bases."

Then I went to get me some woodruff syrup.

You've never actually seen proper northern lights, have you?

Looks good to me.

That (and pretty much all) pictures from aurora borealis is not how it looks in reality tho. All Pics are made using extrem long exposure times and/or extrem light sensitive cams. That makes it look atleast 1000 times more intense then in reality. Its also pretty much the only way, to put it into a picture, because with any normal equipment you simply end up with a completly black foto - trust me , ive tried. So, sadly, if one hasnt seen a northern light with his own eyes - you cant get an idea of how it is in reality. I was trying to look around and found something more realistic and this is the best I could find: And even here you have to keep in mind, this is a extremly light senstive camera so in reality, its much darker. You get the idea by seeing how bright the trees are, as if they are in broad daylight, while its actually in the middle of the night.

True that; I've tried too, with this astonishing effect:

Very interesting... I did not realise that at all. Thanks for sharing.

That's what happens when you live smack-dab on the equator I guess. :Smile_trollface:

Yes, as @ForlornSailor mentioned, with normal equipment you can get almost black photo. Another 2 examples:

To get effect as shown on that map it's necessary to use tripod plus long exposure time, not to mention that there must be weather conditions to actually spot the lights. So I'm very happy WG made this map, as I consider northern light as one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

On occasion, probably. It's certainly visible in the southern part of Norway now and then.

But generally, the further north you go the stronger and more frequent the aurora gets. I have seen auroras resembling the in-game version when I've been in Troms. Where I live (in Trondheim) it's not as intense, but still pretty decent.
