According to your rank you get matched up against other clans on the same rank. When you win you move up the ranks thus encountering tougher opposition. And vice versa.

TL;DR? Ships you pick don't matter, you get matched according to your current rank.

Longer version?

  • There is no ship class balancing. We're locked to single tier so there's no telling how that would be balanced if there were multi-tier CBs, probably ignored aswell
    • Picking a BB absolutely doesn't guarantee you won't meet CVs and vice versa. All ship picks are 100% irrelevant for the match that you'll get
  • You're matched according to the "elo" system - that's a skill based MM system. You have 2 ratings - your rank (visible) and your match-making-rating (MMR / not visible)
    • Your rank determines your current standing. It's split into 3 parts -> League / Division / Points. For example at the time of me writing this you're Silver 3 w/ 58 points. Silver league, 3rd division, 58 points.
      • Main thing (that you see) this gives is what rewards you are eligible for. Those being all of your Leagues rewards, and all those in lower leagues.
      • In the background this determines how many points you gain / lose for your wins / defeats
        • Your rank is about the same as enemies rank -> you gain / lose average amount (I think it's somewhere around 20...25 points)
        • Your rank is lower than enemies rank -> you gain more / lose less
        • Your rank is higher than enemies rank -> you gain less / lose more
      • Your rating is completely separate for the Alpha & Bravo teams
    • The part that determines whom you meet is the MMR. While typically (when you're near 50% WR) it will be about the same as your rank, it changes a bit quicker.
      • As you go on streaks the jumps of your MMR get bigger and bigger compared to your rank.
        • As you keep winning your MMR will climb up higher and match you against stronger opponents. If you keep winning you'll get way more points advancing your rank faster. If you start losing your MMR will slowly drop / stabilize without you losing a lot of points
        • As you keep losing (so you're likely rated too high for your teams capabilities) your MMR will drop quicker than your rank, give you weaker opponents as  a "breather" and allow you to start winning again when your rating reaches a level where you do belong
      • Whenever you're matched against someone their MMR is near yours, within some "distance" WG allows for. This "distance" expands with time in queue.
        • For example a team in Gold 3 who's on a winning streak may meet a team in Typhoon 3 who's on a losing streak - their MMRs might be very similar.
      • The MMR seems to be somewhat tied to players themselves, not just the team
        • Lets say 7 players play A team to Typhoon, then jump into the B team that is still in Bronze. Instead of fighting other Bronze teams they'll be matched against teams much higher, likely somewhere in gold. Their games will also rapidly push them up through the lower ratings. Then, lets say, when they're in Silver they're changed out by 7 players who haven't played CBs up to that point. They will face teams of their own or slightly below their rating.

Something like that. Ask if there are more questions

If you're on a winning streak and they're on a losing streak it's certainly possible. Plus, possibly, at least one of you two may have sat in the queue for a prolonged time.

We have been matched against much better teams, usually after a longer winning streak. Sometimes even we have won. Playing against better team does not always mean that you have to lose. They can have worse day, try some new tactics, have ships that yours line up will counter hard or just  make mistakes. You'll not lose many points anyway, but can gain a lot and have nicely boosted team morale in case you'll win. Besides you can learn something new too.

Since we leave the waiting queue before the 45s mark, the matchups vs much stronger teams is greatly reduced.

Facing teams one league higher is pretty normal, especially when in the first group of your league or being in the advancement rounds.
