Tom Hanks is making a version of The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester (WW2 convoy escort story from the POV of the convoy's American commander), the film's name is Greyhound. Reminds me somewhat of The Cruel Sea (British Atlantic convoy escorts), there's an old film of that as well with Jack Hawkins. Hopefully they'll get around to doing a film of HMS Ulysses at some point (Arctic convoy-based). Of course, there's always Sink the Bismarck! as well.

[-N5C-] Nit0 Players 289 posts 18,236 battles Report post #4 Posted June 11, 2020 Why do like the old version of Midway? It's cheap (footage from Tora Tora Tora). I find the new one much better, and a great movie to celebrate the good ol'warmovies of the 60's and 70's. As for recommendations: Tora Tora Tora The Kings Choice (a well made scene in that movie showing the sinking of Blucher in Oslofjorden).
[ELEC] LiveWire___ Players 919 posts 7,339 battles Report post #5 Posted July 2, 2020 They need to make a movie about: 1: The battle of Jutland. 2: The Royal Navy getting the Enigma machine first. 3: The battle of the Java Sea. This would be an epic tragedy film. 4: The Taranto Raid. 5: HMAS Sydney Vs HSK Kormoran (another tradgedy, where the hero would be the "Unidentified body on Christmas Island" look it up. Epic. Absolutely epic.) 6: Cape Matapan. Notice that these all involve RN ships. Because Hollywood bias.

[-TPF-] invicta2012 Players 5,671 posts 23,167 battles Report post #7 Posted July 4, 2020 This is probably one for the warship hardcore fans - it's black and white and silent (!) - but this is a fabulous movie: It was filmed in 1928, using Royal Navy ships (you can see a number of C/D class cruisers and Queen Elizabeth class BBs in the trailer, with the actual crews performing their drills): https://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/oct/09/the-battles-of-coronel-and-falkland-islands-best-british-war-film-silent-lff-rereleased It's remarkably well shot for the 1920's, too - up there with Eisenstein and Lang's movies.

[TACHA] NobleRipper Players 1,210 posts Report post #9 Posted July 10, 2020 It's admittedly about submarines, but you can't go wrong with Das Boot; there is a film version, but the miniseries is better (best to go subs not dubs, appropriately enough)...
[-SBF-] Greyshark Alpha Tester, In AlfaTesters 8,315 posts Report post #10 Posted July 10, 2020 Midway 2019, really good one. I’ve seen it in cinema, and actually today I got blu ray from Amazon. The other one I recommend you is Captain Phillips. Not strictly about warships, but featuring some of them in action; one of my favourite movies ever.

Letters from Iwo Jima Strictly speaking not a Japanese movie, it's directed by Clint Eastwood. But the whole cast is Japanese(a very heavyweight cast, some big names here), as well as all the dialogue. The movie is about the battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese perspective. It's definitely in my top 5 war movies ever.
[BYOB] Aragathor Players 6,297 posts 27,495 battles Report post #20 Posted July 23, 2020 A good one I watched recently: known as Isoroku, sometimes called The Admiral (for example in Germany). Besides nice shots of ships it has a very balanced view of Yamamoto, the closest to what I read about him in fact.

Letters from Iwo Jima is way more intense; it finally brings a non-stereotypic view of the "enemy" point of view that is pretty unusual for the American cinema. I really like also Korean cinema (before Parasite hit if you believe me ). Even though it is not a war movie in the classical sense (it's more about the consequences of war) you might find this movie interesting Joint Security Area. It's one of the first movies of the director of Oldboy, Chan-wook Park. Not his best but still a good movie. 12 minutes ago, Aragathor said: A good one I watched recently: known as Isoroku, sometimes called The Admiral (for example in Germany).
