World of Warships: Fleet Command battle modes

Yes, we know that WG is only interested in selling more ships for high-tier PVP, and either neglecting other modes they used to support (Ops) or continuing to neglect modes they never supported (low-tier PVP) and certainly have no interest in new PVE content. And yes, we know that ai auto-pilot is not perfect. Before you point that out

Spoiler

But...

Fed up of playing with unreliable people not doing what you want, or suffering from afker's? Why own 200+ ships if you can play with only one ship at a time?

Why not go into battle with your own fleet of ships instead? (Okay, yes, I've been playing a lot of AL lately).

Here's why fleet modes are a good idea:

1) It encourages players to own and develop a large roster of ships and commanders. If you already have a large roster sitting idle here's way to make use of them.

2) It encourages players to own or buy multiple Premium ships even at the same tier for Premium economy bonuses.

3) It removes the disincentive of owning clone or sister ships. If you want a Rodney to go with your Nelson here's a way for that to happen. Also, Black Friday clone versions. And more asset flipping of base models for new historical ships that now compliment rather than compete (hello INS Delhi and INS Mysore, it's about time).

4) It encourages Premium time for the multiplicative economy bonuses that would have far greater ROI than a mere single ship in Ops.

5) It's a pathway for Auxillary/Support ships. It also encourages a diversity of classes in your roster.

6) It encourages strategic play, map positioning, multi-tasking, and mutual support.

7) It encourages specialist builds (ship upgrades, commander skills) for ships that you want in your fleet and can order around, i.e. if you want specialised AA or radar cruisers you can develop and deploy your own mix.

8) It allows common features like Halls of Fame (roster sizes, ship power, commander points, Operation scores, times, etc etc) and a possible pathway for new currencies.

What would the set up be?

Very simply it would work like you form a division now. You would prepare your ships (camo, flags, captains) open a fleet roster and select the ships that you wanted.

Fleets could be of different sizes (3,7,12, whatever) meeting whatever class, tier, and nation restrictions were in place.

How would it work?

Old timers will remember the God view for controlling squadrons of the pre-re-work CVs. You would give each ship a course on the Map using left-click, and/or the zoomed out God view interface of old CVs, mouse-wheel controls the zoom level (re-centered on the selected fleet ship), set a posture using radio buttons (defensive/stealthy , aggressive/shoot anything, balanced) and orders using right-click (follow ship x, shoot target y). You would have exactly the same u.i. and direct helm and gunnery control of your flagship as you already do, and can call for focused fire (F3) as you already do. Although as every other F-key would be irrelevant the F-keys could instead be repurposed as a hotkey for individual ships.

As you are only controlling your flagship your other ships are captained by their assigned commanders using whatever skills they have. If your flagship is sunk you can take control of any other surviving ship.

Sounds great, but what would you do with them?

You could do 1vs1 PVP.

You could do domination and standard battles in PVE using the Sandbox mode ai.

You could do mission-orientated goals like current Operations, convoy escort, or something new.

What would it cost and what would the rewards be?

For every ship you use you pay the service costs and ammunition. You can keep more of what you earn using a truncated roster and have more of a challenge, or play at lower tiers for lower costs/rewards. Every ship using consumables (camo and flags) you pay for.

The rewards are going to be finite anyway, as they are now there is only so much damage that be spread around in a battle. But it encourages Premium ships and Premium time for the greater economy benefits. Every ship earns XP and credits using their integral multipliers, and every ship commander earns commander XP depending on what each achieved under your and ai control. But only XP and credits earned by your original flagship count towards first win, snowflakes, daily containers, missions, and directives, etc.

What needs to be further developed?

The sandbox AI already exists, as does the many maps. The results screen would be complicated, but a lazy workaround could be for each individual ship to have individual result reports, Also the replay system could better support free cam and multiple POVs, but I believe there is already work happening on this, and other people have suggested other technical improvements to the replay system. It's a luxury, but you could get some awesome cinematics from this.

Really it would appeal most who like to play solo (and those who like to have total control), but offers a gateway to people who have invested heavily in the game to make use of their assets in a shorter playing time. The most consistent appeal of the game, even to those of us getting tired of the stale gameplay, is the fantastic ship models and artwork that the art department have created for us. Here's a way to make more  use of them, and encourage a broader playerbase playing the same game but with different activities. This takes nothing away from the existing battle modes for those who prefer them; it only makes the game more popular and drives more sales. Surely a good thing.

Also, I thought I would bold the point about Auxillary ships as it seems they could be introduced if only there was some interest in playing them, which I don't think would be very popular for a human to take in preference over a combat ship, but in a more arcade-y type battle definitely have a place.

BTW, chip in with any other RTS good practice features that could be useful without getting too complicated or bloaty. Hope you all remembered to pick up your free copy of TW: Shogun 2.

I agree with @Zen71_sniperthat this sounds interesting.

It IS a different game, but I would be very interested in playing it.

I loved the RTS game Homeworld and I can certainly see similarity.

There are things here that I am sure would make WG sit up and take notice.

I worry about the cost in real money of putting together a fleet for this 'mode' / 'game'.

(My fear for this would be that it would show just how much I have spent on this game over time.)

It would be awesome to have fleets/task groups all commanded by a single player; however, I suspect that in order for it to work there should be scope for at least a few people to play together (I think the smallest game mode at the moment is playing an Op with a private division of four or five, so probably at least that) with an appropriate number of ships each to make up their own parts of the overall fleet. If that were the case, I would further suggest that there were broad types of task group which players could field, chosen at ship selection, in order to maintain a certain balance of the fleet (so a carrier group has a single CV and then cruisers and destroyers in the other slots; a battle squadron is mostly battleships with some cruiser and/or destroyer support etc.). Unfortunately it would seem that the cost in resources to WG for a mode like that might not be commensurate with the investment, particularly if only one or at best a handful of players are involved.

As for RTS features that could be imported into WoWs as it currently stands, there are a couple that spring to mind which might ease the burden on the poor AI: waypoints and patrol routes for ships on autopilot; essentially holding down a key (classically in RTS games it's usually Control) allows the player to set multiple points that their ship will go to in turn, thus allowing them to choose their own route; add the options for the ship to go back along the same course in reverse or head back to the first waypoint and go around again, and you can create a patrol route. I'd suggest having aggressive/neutral/evasive AI modes for autopiloting ships, but a) it would only really benefit carriers and b) it would further encourage/legitimise botting and AFK behaviour, which the game has enough trouble with as is, unless it were heavily restricted (evasive makes the ship travel at full speed and zigzag whenever spotted, aggressive makes it try to keep the most guns on the enemy at once and so forth).

As interesting as it sounds, this is your answer.

The problem with this idea, which i kinda like, is that it creates a whole different game again.
We are turning a 3rd person ots arcade-ish shooter to an rts strategy game.
Now that rts gameplay is the same reason old cvs got changed so this will never get implemented

Obviously this is blue-sky thinking. Believe me, I know it's unlikely to happen, but for me dreaming that this could be a game mode is preferable to playing the modes on offer right now.

And this is simply an additional battle mode. It's not a replacement for Random, Co-op, Ops, or Clan Battles.

It only uses assets already in the game. It is in no way a new game, any more than Operations are a different game.

The God's view already exists. You still see it in spectator mode. That used to be the way squadrons were vectored. This would be how your ships would be vectored. You'd still have first-person control of your flagship. Nothing is changed, only added to.

Spoiler

image.thumb.png.93b3944ced765824c7eb2d806d7d88a9.png

Got this from YT for illustration purposes

As for costs, you could still viably be f2p using a roster of tech tree ships. But if you wanted to use Premium ships and time it's win-win.

And obviously this is a return to RTS for this battle mode because they'd be no other way of issuing orders to your other ships. Don't like RTS? Don't play fleets. Play whatever else you like in exactly the same way as you do now. This battle mode doesn't replace or convert any other battle mode. I had hoped that was clear. It does not detract from the PVP game, only adds an additional battle mode for PVE (but as mentioned you could go head-to-head with your fleet against someone else with their fleet. That way you can indulge PVP solely using your own skills and no-one to blame but yourself. Or RNGesus).

It only uses already existing assets, so, no, it's not a different game either. How can it be when it's the same engine, using the same ships, commanders, and resources? The Sandbox ai is (not the dumb bots on the Live server) is quite capable of making an interesting battle, but it would be the same ai for both the enemy fleet and your own fleet ships under ai control.

I much prefer that WG cater to players with different interests to broaden the playerbase rather than their current business strategy of selling high-end ships for PVP and ignoring the PVE side. It's an under-utilisation of their assets for one thing.

Anyway, who knows. Maybe an aspiring game developer looking for ideas comes across this and sees a market opportunity that WG are completely overlooking. I currently have 224 ships (and another 13 vacant slots) and I know there are other people like me looking for new modes and sitting on unused port queens.

I mean i like the idea but this is probs your best bet for a 3D RTS with ships at this point (campaign will be released in alpha 7).

I do like the idea however, maybe someone could make a naval action, wows crossbreed of somekind.

Since weegee only cares about short term profits atm, there online games seem nothing more than income generators for other projects they undertake.

wish this was a thing however.

Would Certainly like it as its own Game. Dont think its anything suited for WoWs.

No Offense Intended. But this would effectively be its own Game and would be a Completely Different Genre than WoWs.

And well. I mean Wargaming has the Assets already. So maybe they could actually make a Proper Strategy Game with Ships.

But its clearly not World of Warships :P

If one already has the fleet, there is no extra costs in this mode, currently, not playing that much because I was very annoyed with the European (Swedish) DD release, WG said good concealment and the concealment for them is mediocre at the best, and that advertising video they produced reinforced the message of good concealment, also the turrets on the DD's crawl round so if maneuvering you can not fire your guns

Therefore, currently not spending real money in this game and a bit disinterested as the CV rework is a hash (not taken my CV's out for normal play since the rework hit)

sounds great, sometimes after I die I stay in game and watch from birdside perspective the rest of the game, it is fun to watch all those shells, planes and stuff fighting.  But it does sound like a new game, rts game. Dont know is this even possible to make. Imagine ultra big maps with more players controling a lot of ships. nice idea, hope they make something like that, +1

Well you said it yourself: the game engine already has a birds eye perspective with free cam, exactly as the old CVs.

It's not true RTS like Total War or C&C, it's literally just a different perspective for giving orders to the other ships in your roster that are under bot control. You still retain direct control of your flagship and fight as you already do. There is nothing new here, all the assets are already part of World of Warships so it's not a different game but a different battle mode with an added perspective for fleet control (exactly as we used to have for squadron control, hence the multi-tasking while still fighting with your flagship).

High tier maps are 40kmx40km so are already quite large. With smaller rosters even smaller maps feel empty. And it's just one player controlling one fleet as described, versus either one other player with their fleet, or against pve opposition. I'm not being prescriptive in what battles will be fought or how big they would be (7 seems a good number), only describing the concept for how they would be fought.

Is it just me or does this sound like "Ultimate Admirals Dreadnought"?

Don't get me wrong, the idea is great, but given WG's current autopilot AI I wouldn't hold my breath..
