Ahoy, fellow virtual seafarers, sea dogs and scallywags

Disco has arrived and I'm looking for some tips and hints, I played many years ago and lost my account as i foolishly linked it to a now defunct work email for a former employer, having said that i only managed to reach tier 8 on the RU DD line and when they split i was given a tier 9. So starting over is not a big deal for me.

So I don't know how long ago that was but its been quite a while since playing.

I must say as a veteran of tanks i had 5 tier 10's  and planes I had 3 tier 10's, I'm really enjoying this game, I'm a gentleman of a certain age and this game seems to fit the bill, it seems like a more mature and relaxed gaming experience with less toxicity than WOT for instance.

The freebie's are pretty amasing, so far I've got 21 days premium, 600 gold and ill be getting a tier 3 premium ship just for logging on tomorrow.

I'm seeing all these new nations and lines, this coal thing is looking good and I'm tempted to save for either the tier 6 Pan Asian dd or maybe one of the tier 10's.

please advise any that are good or what to avoid,

I looked on steam discussions relating to WOWS and there seemed to be a general whine about CA's which is making me tempted to get one. which is the best I had the bogue before they did this flight sim thing

I wonder how many of these cry posters realise they are inadvertently advertising the next OP thing lol.  Just like the outcry about the IS3A in wot or soviet bombers in planes,. I read the whines and went and got both.

I'm going to stay free to play for as long as possible and I m wondering what are the easiest, most sealcubbingest and OP tech tree lines, vessels available.

Many thanks in advance

P.s I cant wait for subs

You should just play whatever interests you the most, or pick a line you think suits you and go from there.

There are some ships around that can be considered too good, especially in good hands. Like Thunderer, perhaps. But there aren't really any ''OP lines''

I started with the British CL line. Most people say not to start with Brit ships. :D

However, I *really* enjoy the CL line. I am currently on Leander which is such a massive improvement on the earlier ones. I have unlocked the Fiji, but I don't have enough credits to buy it and fit it with modules yet, so i'm just plugging away earning credits. Make use of the premium time before it runs out. I always seem to get it at the worst possible time... like when PTS (Test server) opens.

Anyway, I really enjoy the Brit CLs, fairly quick, agile, holds speed when turning, fast acceleration, smoke, heal.

I also played Minotaur (t10 CL on brit line) on PTS and it is amazing.

So is Lightning (t8 RN DD), though the slog to get to Lightning is tough going, nothing before it even comes close to how fun it is. Jervis is... closer.

Don't spend your doubloons >.< I wasted my starting ones changing ship xp into free xp because I didn't understand how unlocking ships worked. Duh. So now i'm trying to save (very slowly) for a Dasha captain. :D

Almost everything can be good in the right hands; the trick is to find which line(s) gel with your preferences and abilities.

That said, play all classes in the lower tiers to get a handle on their basic characteristics and abilities; you may well end up with a 'main' class (mine is DDs FWIW), but you'll do a lot better if you have a handle on what everyone can/can't do, and what they're trying to do to you. Suggest starting with IJN and US, as they're the original lines and are relatively low on weirdness and gimmicks.

A couple of things to be aware/beware of:

  • You have protected MM up to T4; T5 and above, you start to face +2 opposition. Don't go above T4 until you're ready (and have 'good enough' captains too, if possible).
  • T4 CVs are a bloody menace (not to mention a wonderful illustration of the cognitive damage done by excess vodka); they will make your life miserable if/when you meet them - this provides a strong motive to get to T5/6 as quickly as possible, even if it isn't ideal for newer players.
  • Don't rush up the tiers (same as WOT); yes, a higher tier ship will generally be more powerful, but be mindful that everyone else has one too. I'm sure you know this already though.

Do you mean aircraft carriers (CVs)? CAs are heavy cruisers (light ones are CL). Anyway, CVs have had a very detrimental effect on the game for many people (IJN torp DD drivers especially), so much of the moaning is entirely justified - as you'll discover when you encounter the aforementioned T4 CV plague! I would pick one of US and IJN; the RN CVs are generally less good than the US/IJN equivalents. You need a CV meister to opine on the better choice from IJN/US (fwiw I marginally prefer IJN, but I don't play CVs much). Beware if you're being f2p though - CVs have a fairly tough economy.

Whatever you take the time to get good with, in general.

Be careful what you wish for; based on previous form, there is every chance that WG will mess the implementation up somehow and make the game unplayable for someone or other...

One thing you should know: WG NEVER has meaningful missions for ships below tier V. Every event is for ships tier V and above, so getting a free tier III ship means little (except for eye candy in your port).

Also, the introduction of subs (which WG swore never to do some years back), will change the game at least as much as the addition of CV's.

Thanks so much for all the replies,

I only just got back online as our work network went down last night and just came back.

So it seems that their are not many op ships but op players which is a good thing,

I played a few games yesterday and felt I performed quite well

I managed to sink two battleships and a cruiser with the Shenyang tier 4 Pan Asian destroyer. However, I was soon the target of these pesky tier 4 aircraft carriers. I would have thought a destroyer could dodge air attack and I was sent to Davy Jones' locker. I get the frustration as we where clearly in the lead and I could have won but for some reason both my team mates decided that they wouldn't cap and we all got blitzed As a wargaming veteran, I understand that "balance" has always been an issue in their games.

Subs could end up being the wheeled vehicles of WOT or high tiered Bombers in WOWP I had both and the Wheeleies made light tanks feel obsolete and tier 10 bombers where just horrible, I had a Soviet  bomber and it had 78% wins after 126 battles and was clearly broken.

It became apparent when ships at tier  6 was markedly harder , I will attempt to stick to the lower tiers as suggested until  i can get my captains up a little higher.

I'm going to go for the Pan Asian Destroyer line and British battleships . I have Warpsite tier 6 premium on 7 days rental, but upon logging in yesterday somehow its now become permanent, maybe its some training thing as I didn't get any notification, Thank you mysterious benefactor whoever you are :Smile_great:

Thanks again for the replies

If you used someone's friend link either to open an account, or to return after a long period, Warspite is given to you for free upon reaching tier VI. You also get a bunch of credits and so on.

Naturally I wish I had known this before I started the other month. :D

Thanks again for the replies,

Couldn't get online as we had a bank holiday in the UK and i mostly post whilst I'm at work Im a key worker but there is no work, still apparently im essential so I have to be in the office.

Last week I moved a table and answered 2 emails!

Thanks for clarifying Aldo, I was wondering where that tier 6 came from.

Yes I got a huge bunch of freebies so many signals and cammo's  I managed to reach tier 8 in less than 30 battles, which although fun was a little too fast.

I had only 10 games on the tier 7 Pan Asian Destroyer before unlocking the tier 8 which is just wow! I remember it took weeks just to get from tier 5 to tier 7 when i played 2+ years ago.

It then gave me some tier 10 rentals that are for clan wars only but I have to complete 135 games to unlock clan battles lol.

I have to admit that, I did play many years ago and got to tier 9 in the RU DD line, and some of those tactics came flooding back to me, I'm playing it as a gun boat as the torp range is quite low, sniping and raining HE own on BB's its quite enjoyable. whilst dodging incoming fire.

I'm thinking much like a light tank DD's become stronger towards the end of a battle and I managed to sink 2 battleships and one carrier at the end game.

I will go back down the tiers but its nice to be able to "platoon" with my old buddy who has a few higher tiers.

I even received a compliment from the enemy, "worthy adversary", I must say that this is one of the friendliest gaming communities I've encountered.

Many thanks

Disco'

My advice is just, that this game has a very long learning curve, and some Tiers are a bit different gameplays, that you have to get used to it. T8-T10 for example.

Even with 1000 Battles you can still be a "newb" ^^

Many thanks guys,

Just uninstalled the game

Although, (Im almost sure  no one from wargaming reads the forum i just thought i would state my experience as a returning player in order to provide some feedback, what the experience has been, sadly for wargaming but,  less sadly for me i feel i have to relay my thoughts

This really is no fun at all. losing 13 then 12 games in a row on 2 consecutive days

I've simply had enough this game is not enticing for newcomers

i feel a genuine lack of motivation to get better and don't see any ships that are even worth grinding for, i hit tier 9 on old account and all of the bad memories have come flooding back

After a string of losses and unsatisfying wins I have decided that this game is not for me, I cant find the motivation to re learn the game or research any lines and the balance feels utterly horrific, low tier = seal clubbers high tier = cowardly island huggers, static game play  and inept carrier captains.

Wargaming lack the ability to make a balanced game we all know it, they know it too and maybe they'll attempt to fix these issues. but seeing as it has been they way it is for as long,  I seriously doubt it.

regardless of which

I think its time to move onto pastures new I'm done with wargaming, we had a long relationship going back to 2013 when I 1st played tanks. I even went to a couple of tankfest events.

Returning after playing many other titles from steam WG titles  feel like something from a previous generation, many other games have achieved reasonable balance.

If wargaming want new people to stick around.they should not create such poorly balance games an new comer should not lose 90% of games regardless of skill.

Again many thanks for the encouragement from the forum guys, the one thing ships has got is a nice community

All the best, I hope you find something enjoyable!

As for wows, I enjoy playing tiers 2 to 6. It suits my skill level... which is sadly not too great yet. I'm getting better at hitting things though!
