Invite code bonuses

I'd been considering the game for a while and figured i might as well try it when i saw a youtuber which had a code for new users which gave a ship, a bunch of credits and some other things to start out with. maybe i just missed it, but when i signed up i didn't see any field to put in a code. and if i go to the wargaming code redeeming it just says it's an invalid code. is this something that has to be redeemed in-game? if not, where do i find it?

The code was valid by clicking a 'Have an invite code?' link during signup.

 

On EU it's being replaced by referral links, e.g. https://warships.net/AdventTrooper
