I'm interested in spending some doubloons on a few of santa's mega gifts - but only if the odds of getting a ship are favourable. In particular, what are the odds of getting a rare ship? Does anybody know?

Don't buy the mega ones. The big (medium) ones only. I bought 28 mega and got 4 ships. Then I bought 8 mediums and got 3 ships! The mega ones give you a lot of dubloons and coal. My friend bought 20 mediums and got Georgia, Friesland, Azuma, Kamikaze, GZ and Kii.

Don't buy for the chance of getting a rare ship unless you have most of the others..You probably get disappointed. I have had most luck with the medium.

The odds of getting a rare ship are pretty slim. You'll hear tales, including one in this thread already, of people dropping rare ships from santa crates hand over fist. However, in almost all of these cases those people will have already owned the vast majority of premium ships and dropped the rare ones because those were the only ones left for them to get.

 

People on the forums and reddit have been compiling drop rates and it seems they're pretty heavily weighted towards the lower tier premiums. If you drop a ship you already own, that container will become a super container which is guaranteed to drop a ship you don't have but those too seem to be weighted towards the lower tiers. So if you take a look at that list of 86 premium ships that can drop from the containers and see vast tracts of ships you don't already have, I would warn you that buying the containers specifically with the intent to get rare ships is, in all likelihood, either going to cost you a lot of money or you're going to end up disappointed. Of course you could get super lucky and get a Missouri on your first container, but that's gambling for you.

 

If you do still want to get some ships, then I think the big gift containers are probably the best value for money. You should ignore the standard ones like the plague and while the mega ones do have a higher chance of dropping ships, they're also quite a bit more expensive. Big seems to be the best bang for your buck.

I had a load of crates gifted to me, or bought with spare gold.

 

The eight ships they dropped arrived in strict order of tier/value, lowest first: Siroco - Hill - Yahagi - Viribus Unitis - etc. I have most premiums already, so these were filling in gaps in my collection (ie the ones I didn't want anyway!). The order was so obvious, I was able to accurately predict which ship would drop next.

 

When the time came to drop the Tier 8s and 9s I am missing (Lenin, Friesland, Azuma, Benham, etc), the ships simply stopped dropping altogether! Ok, its all just random luck of course.... (right...).

 

 

A lot of people report the same experience. The guys who have set out to get a rare ship have often bought $100s of crates in order to try and "force" a drop. Even if you want a nice Tier 7 or 8, it seems likely that you need to own everything 5-6 in order for the drop to happen. I'm sure #2 its all random though...

 

Maybe just buy a few crates for the fun of opening them, but first convince yourself that they' will all be Frosty Fir Tree cammos or signal flags. If you set youself low expectations, then a ship will be a nice bonus.

Don't by the big ones! I baught 40 and got 0(zero) ships. Out of 60 mega containers I got 10 ships. On the other hand... last year (on the NA server) I got 6 ships out of 20 big containers. Is just pure RNG.

 

As the others already said: If you don't have all other ships from the list the chance to get a rare one is really low.

You can bet your sweet mother that this has also been doctered. They advertise with a generic ship drop chance. Low tier higher drop chance then high tier, rare ships very low chance. Why would they hand out rare ships too easily when low rates will make addicts and compulsive people buy 60 or more crates? I think it's a fallacy.

Don't buy more than 20 in one go.  Spend DBs gained on ships in the armory, thus removing them from the list of ships that might drop in the next batch.  And buy the cheapest ones first, leave all the higher value ones to be potential drops (unless you really, really want a certain ship)

As for rare ships, people don't really get them without having all the normal ships first.

So, it seems, from what I'm reading above, that my dream of owning a Belfast, a Giulio Cesare or an Imperator Nikolai are just that....a dream.

sadly yes, this appears to be accurate...

 

to be more accurate if you want t7 and above, you need the t5+6s.... than if you want the rare ones, you need all the t7+8s as well..

I was about 15 ships short from the list. 100 mega crates and 8 big ones later I got all of them, an the order of them dropping was quite obvious.

 

Out of those ships, 3 where T9, 7 T8 and  the rest T5-7. The rare ones were Belfast, Fujin ( no idea what's so special about it) and Enterpise.

 

From last to first, Enterprise, T9 ships, Fujin, Belfast, some T8 ships and before that a mix (1 T8 and 1-2 T5-7).

I haven't bought any crates yet but I've opened over 30 small one and gotten no ships. Previous yers the mid-size have given the best yield but that's no guarantee.

I'm planning to buy a few on xmas morning and I already know what ship (if any) I'll get since I have 85/86 of them. It's Ark Royal and since I don't play CVs I'm still on the fence about it.

 

Remember: The more premiumships you have, the better chance to get something good so my advice is not to sell off "unwanted" ones too quick.

About 300 euro , 5 packs of 20 mega crates from premium shop. Not cheap, but if you are a ship hoarder like me you get good value.

IF you really want a Giulio Ceasre save the money and buy a Viribus Unitis. Its Guns are as good as the one on the Giulio. But you dont have to gamble.

Well, I got lucky this year. After the free crated dropped nothing, I spent a bunch of doubloons I had hoarded (was planning on using them for the PR boosters, then the patch hit, so I dropped them on the boxes instead, I'd literally rather own a kamikaze than a PR).

 

Drops:

1 t8 (Le Terrible)

4 t7 (Lazo, Blyska, Abruzzi, Yudachi - not a weeb so that last one is wasted on me with it's sea mine memes - really, is this ship's only role to spam "POI" in chat like you're a bit speshul?)

some t6-t5...

 

and then from the last box, a Belfast. That alone makes it all worth it, especially when I remember that last year all I managed to get was an Eugen, I can say I'm pretty happy with my haul this Christmas.

Got that one from crates. Didn't know that's it's so good. No one in my clan had it and didn't see any review from it so far. I was positively surprised .

I like it too. People whine about it's speed (you need to know how to position) and lack of AA (which is a joke anyway, especially in this tier), but it's guns are really good. And I can forgive a lot if the guns work. They just produce cits left and right. Love it.

Think I bought 8x medium boxes and got nothing worthy  from those and then I think I bought 28x small boxes and got 3x T6 ships out of those. Has anyone actually gotten anything above T6 out of the small boxes?

ATM I have almost all ships from the list. The only one missing - Benham. I hope that I'll get it when I'll unlock the 3rd directive, get dubloons compensation for Gorizia and I'll buy 12 medium ones.

I got nothing out of my 29 free small boxes I got from t10's, not a single ship, so I'd say you got pretty lucky there.

Some CC bought 20 small for his wife and she got GZ... Well he was opening them and making a video opening.
