Narai horror stories. How badly did your team fail?

Pub chat time.

Narai is a very familiar Op for those who division up to play for farming and/or fun, but how badly can it go wrong with a Random team? Post here your experiences and/or Fail scorecards (no naming and shaming). What ships did you and the others play and what happened? Who lost their cool in chat? Need a catharsis? Come here for a moan and a commiseration. Super-carry stories also accepted.

I though quantity of plays might compensate for quality, but might have been too optimistic.

I only had time for one this morning. I queued up in Nelson with Premium consumables and fire and repair flags. We also had a Gneisenau, Yorck, 2x Algerie, Jervis and a Blyskawica. So good damage out potential not much tanking. Blys calls transports but is followed by an Algerie and later the Jervis, abandoning the middle. We are so rubbish the first Emerald actually survives and runs back towards the harbour. Mo is very late appearing, and the remaining Algerie launches a spread causing Mo to evade and beach itself before existing the harbour! Ask the Yorck and the Algerie to head off the CV, Algerie dies and Yorck is happy staying in the green. Gne moves instead (!), dies to the Nicholas. Blys races to catch the CV. Yorck, Me, enter the harbour from the upper entrances, the naughty Algeire enters from the south. Campletown survives and smokes up in the middle, holding me back because I don't want to eat a spread. We take down the first wave ok. I took a torp and flood from the Gallant and then two more fires, and got finished off by the QE because I was showing too much side. Jervis dies soon after. 6 kills, 220k damage and 1.4m potential. 400 bxp. (no scorecard, sorry). Classic case of chasing down secondary objectives at the cost of the primary.

Haven't played that one since the rework, any guide on how to do it now?:cap_hmm:

1 Cruiser goes for the enemy transports, preferably one with Hydro, a BB will lend him a salvo on the fortification.

1 Cruiser goes CV, preferably one with Hydro and some basic skill, as you have to fight a DD and low tier Cruiser.

1 Gneise, Scharn or DD to torp Missouri, preferably BBs as the DD cant draw fire later on and wrecks will clog up the main area for torping

The rest should fill up the BB spots and bring heavy cruisers, escorting the transports without getting in their path, as this can actually slow them down and make them fall behind the main ship's automated repair circle. Before entering the main area with the escorting group, split up and approach from both sides of the big island. The transports will do the same and there is always a DD spawning behind the island, kill him first.

When you enter the last and main zone, draw fire from the AI by pushing in, so the AI will less likely focus on transports. If everyone survives, you get additional XP so dont ram the Missouri or Colorado (last ship). Kill the DDs and Cruisers with torps first, kill all enemies faster than the unloading of the troops takes time, as this also gives more XP. The secondary objective of guaranteeing a specific amount of landed troops will still be completed.

If you are interested in playing it, there are always the same suspects asking for people in the Operations channel. Pick a BB and paddle slowly ahead of the transports, you will get the hang of it, as enemies always spawn in the same area and do the same. Most teams created there are way less worse than auto-searching for allies, so keep an eye on what the others are doing, you can later do it yourself with ease.

good write-up, keep telling people not to ram the last ship but so many people do it still (for the damage) and dont realise they gimp their reward because of it....

Edit - Oh, yeha, Personal good time:

I once took my Atlanta to get the Transports but, as i was alt-tabbing to get the cricket score, rammed one of the transports (killing me) which let the others escape... and in the hurry to try to get all goals despite that, the team got wiped...

oopsie, mea culpa

Oh? As far as I know, the achievement does not grant extra XP, so feel free to add a source for that claim.

Operations in random in this game just make me want to shoot myself IRL

Much like randoms in general.

Bets XP per player is a 5-divi team. As written above, one CL for TPs, one CL for CV. 3 BBs center, torps are nice indeed; they don't only help with Mo, but also in last wave.

Playing with randoms will just result in scenes like 4 people (out of which 2 are BBs) going for transport while convoy gets nuked and other crazy situations.

Or the classic setup that everyone is a coward and hides behind the convoy and noone feels obligues to go for either TPs or CV.

There is a lot of cynical play in Random Narai games. It can get quite nasty, as there are some people more than willing to troll the ships and the order of events in order to use other players as meat shields. It's usually Fiji / Belfast players who do this (and I'm not surprised, as you can easily get 10+ kills in either).

Still can't help some teams, though. This was the classic "Destroyer ignores the Missouri* and gets sunk by the Nicholas, half the team chases the Lexington into the far corner and wonders where the rest have gone."

* Why they do this? Surely this is a DDs sworn duty in Narai? In the end I sank the Missouri. Myoko's torps are still splendid.

Narai has a unique ability to frustrate as an operation, mainly because it has 3 distinct tasks, in that situation you better hope you only have one troll or very clueless player.

I should start by actually saying I love Narai as an operation with players I know, it's a fun mission where you need to split up and follow a plan. Even with totally random players all you need is 4 people who can actually think and it's fine, still the reason it goes wrong are usually the same 3 problems time and again:

The biggest cause of failing is usually the transports that flee, you ask your team who will go for it and no one responds so you think fine I will do it. However suddenly find 2 BBs happily following you because those transports look like too much for a cruiser to deal with. I won't even go down the road of trying to achieve the Shark amongst shrimps achievement because even if you ask if you can be left alone to get it and you kill 4 there is always someone willing to secure the last kill.

Secondly the number of players who refuse to go into the base in front of the troop ships your escorting so they take a lot of punishment from the DD, fort and CL waiting for them. It's for this reason I am loath to go for the CV or transports as I would rather loose a star than loose the mission.

Finally the CV, the number of times players start going for it then loose confidence and hide due to the escorts or like with the transports you find you get 3 ships following you and have abandoned the troop ships to their fate is depressing.

Anecdotally (sorry) I estimate the achievement to reward between 150-200 base xp. It's noticeable because you can get more in a 6-person div where everyone lives compared to a 5-player div where one dies.

I was in Sinop, we had a Nelson, Hood, Jervis, Fiji, Schors and Helena.

I killed 9, Helena killed 10 and no one, NOT ONE OTHER PLAYER killed anything!!!!!  It was just unbelievably appalling!!!!   :Smile_teethhappy:

You did more twice this one time :Smile-_tongue:

But to anyone not wanting the pain of random plebs...don't go with random plebs. Or lower your expectations (by a lot! :Smile-_tongue:).

Iirc we once completed the Op (5*) with the minimum players (4?).

Not that difficult if players know what to do, otherwise ..  :cap_popcorn:

Played two before work - both 5 stars, can't complain.

Second best random queue ops imo.

Didn't go for the transports btw - instead I always cover Missouri and CV, which helps a ton.

I miss my CV in Narai, WeeGee please fix...

... at least with it I could attempt to carry the sack of potatoes lesser skilled bullet catchers team mates that decide to ignore the enemy CV right up to the point where the transports start landing, then check their minimap and suddenly go

"Ahhhh yes the CV... I forgot about that... hmmm CV...  a CV on it's own... must... sink... CV... must... have.... revenge... revenge for random battles... must... must...

KILL CV, DESTROY ALL CV, CV MUST BUUUURRRNNNN!"

At which point two battleships and a cruiser all have a PTSD moment and go merrily sailing off to the top left corner of the map to extract revenge against the enemy CV despite the fact it has a five minute head start on them and the transports are being used as ship sized pinatas by the enemy reinforcements.

(yes this actually happened)

Sadly there is no official WG information available, so I have to argue with personal experience on this one.

If they ever find someone who remotely knows how to code, knowing WeeGee tells me they'll let you only play the T6 CVs, not the T8 CVs.

Haven't had any spectacular fails on this recently, just annoyances.

Right at the start someone says: "I will go for CV, who will kill the transports?"

Me in Atlanta: "I'll take care of them".

"Ok."

That person indeed goes for the CV and eventually kills it. Fair play. After that Iron Duke dies, I take my Lolanta towards where the transports go. I notice a Hood trailing me but doing so in a weird, roundabout way that means he'll take ages to rejoin the fleet.

"Hood, I don't need you here, could you go back to the fleet?"

No response, naturally, I don't think these 42%-ers can read, anyway.

I ping him to see if he responds to that. Nope. Ok, whatever, I carry on, kill the Nicholas, and start killing the transports. I get them all except one who hasn't been spotted yet. I stop a bit until he rolls from behind an island. I get him down to like 120 health and before my next salvo lands the Hood shells finish it.

Thanks, Hood, I really appreaciate you messing up the achievement for me.

Still no response. He's still at max range too. I push into the bay, help my team farm the rest of the ships, we 5 star it, I score first, Hood scores last, as he never even managed to get into the bay for the last fight. Literally all he did that game was screw me out of the achievement for soloing the transports.

Not a big deal, but pretty annoying tbh.

My favourite loss so far has been in my Flint about 4 months ago - We had a DD who died to the first 3 ships (how........just HOW???) then the rest of the team split left/right with 2BB's and a DD going for the transports, the rest of the team (2 cruisers IIRC) went for the CV and leaving just myself to kill the Missouri and escort ALLLLL the transports into the harbour and hold off ALLLLLLL the enemy fleet.

The 2 BB's in the "Transport" team never even entered the Harbour after killing the transports, the CV team lost all their ships to Phoenix torps but did kill the CV before they died and I torped the Missouri (both sets from behind the island) killed about 2/3 the Harbour bots before being overwhelmed so we lost. I came top of the team with over 2x the base XP of the guy in 2nd and the whole team had low XP, like 200-odd - and then I get a "FFS Flint, L2P" message after the game from a BB which never even saw a Harbour Bot!!! :Smile_teethhappy:

Stopped playing Ops after that and haven't been back!
