GIMP is a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. I'd say this is your best option.

What an abomination my Microsoft Paint 3D design is...

I call it: "The powerhouse of the Stonkest Navy I mean Cell"

One should be the design on its own.

The other is a test on how it *aligns* itself (it's a little off but it's close enough if you look far away )

First af all: Finally, a Camo Competition that I do not miss.
I think I wil be going with something classy with a crown and with some "natural" greys or blues, since I'm not a fan of ships more colorful than my christmas tree. First scetches, this is not a submission, obviously still needs some work in the details and I am not sure if the use of letters is within the rules.

PS: The crashtest ship looks cool, Smeggo ;)

Thanks, I'm usually also more for chilled camos.

The issue with text is that the camo is often upside-down on some ships, but you can just test it for yourself:

You need to:

- Save your design as a dds-file (I use paint.net)

- Put it into res_mods\0.8.10.0\content\gameplay\common\camouflage\textures\

- Rename it so that it replaces a camo (repeating camos all have the word "dazzle" in them, choose one you own like "Ship_dazzle_tile_camo_FranceArc_51.dds")

- start game and mount the camo

Note that the colours will be the ones from the original camo, to change that you would need to extract the camouflage.xml and change RGB-values accordingly...

How about some militarily VALID  efforts this time around ... please?  Some entries that will win should be Effective in the game/ battles as Camouflage    the exact opposite of the ARP or HSF  camos which were gorgeous but effectively ridiculous (IMHO) as camouflage as they stood out instead of merging with their backgrounds

I'm not going to paste any more examples One simply has to image search "real modern navy ship camouflage"

Ok, would this style be more of what you are looking for? Most of the time these ship had a distinctive design so WWII ships weren't really hiding but moreso on to confuse the dimensions of the actual ship altogether?

In case you like the Type 5 Zao alternatate camo scheme (which WG should do with these) then you might like this

(but you didn't take into account the partial polarity of the water-molecules, and thus they orient themselves a bit towards/away from the Na+ (H-atoms towards the Na+) or Cl- ions (O-atom towards the Cl-))

I put some water in that arrangement but also decided to put some randomness into the system as water is moving (though the attraction could have outweighed that motion)

There was still a distinct lack of "Mountbatten Pink" in WoWS... I remedied that (a bit). Based on this colour-scheme and this artwork by Robert Indiana. 

Yes, it makes your eyes bleed when multiplied a lot, then again, so do 75% of the official WoWS-camo's... IIRC, a ship consists of 2 or 3 tiles in full length, so the "splotches" should be reasonably big.

Applied on ships (using @Smeggo's method), it looks very convincing IMHO.

I think the issue he says is that WG says in the description of the events they are looking for camouflages, but that more often than not skins get chosen by WG-staff (and then the general audience) that are not camouflages. Like the Normandie, Blyskawicka, Leningrad, Helena, New York,... All nice skins, but no camouflages. 

 

Although this seems to be a different kind of event, since it requires you to make a tile. Still I hope that only proper camouflage-patterns are being chosen.

This will be a regular consumable camouflage that can be mounted on any ship. We will do our best to provide variety for the shortlist, but it is up to all of you guys to choose the winner anyway :)

Sure you can. PNG works well, should you win we will ask you for source files.
