hello, I was chatting with someone, but the messages disappear.

I looked for a setting somewhere, but didn't find any.

Is this a bug?

That's the game behavior since... errr... always.

Given the quality of most in-game chat interactions, it's probably a good thing they don't get preserved

Makes it very hard for future historians, though. :Smile_trollface:

The messages are kept in a cache that gets cleared either periodically or after a certain inactivity time, probably the latter case since division chats in port don't suffer from it that often. That means no log files saved to disk, which is the way standalone IRC clients operate and what allows you to read things written ages ago, nor hundreds of records in a database table like Whatsapp does.

About it being a flaw, well, it depends: if you really wish to keep every single typed word, yes; if you don't want many small read/write operations to disk that would hamper (even more) the game's performance then it's a pretty sensible choice. Chat messages aren't national security level precisely, so letting them be ephemeral doesn't hurt, although I agree with both @Captain_Newman's and @Karasu_Hidesuke's points of view to a certain extent.

Salute.

They're logging chat Messages for banning purposes, so it's not far fetched if they log port conversations as well.

Best way to convince WG to actually have messages logged, is to daily raise a CS ticket and ask for a chat log.

If 30-50k people would do that every day, they'd be pretty quick on changing the chat system. :Smile_trollface:
