Nooby question from an old timer

On a lot of YouTube videos, I notice that when they have an engine knocked out or another module, then a countdown timer appears on the symbol. I've never seen this on my screen, all I get is a sort of decreasing circle. How is this enabled? A captains perk? some checkbox in the settings?

That should be standard or try the alternative battle interface in the settings.

Press ALT and you should see the timer!
