What ships should I be working towards?

Hi all,

I've recently started playing. There's a lot of ships and I'm kinda lost in which ones would suit my playstyle. So far it seems I'm not the most strategic player. I like my ships having a nice survivability and lots of guns. That may sound like an overpowered ship, but I don't need all the maneuverability, concealment and torpedoes. I'm not tactical enough to put those to optimal use anyways. I prefer a lot of smaller guns with high reload time that do small parts of damage, rather than a big gun that could've done a ton of damage if it were a hit :P

Any ships that you can recommend me working towards? I'm also keeping premium ships in my mind, so if there's any recommendations there, let me know :)

I've played World of Tanks in the past and back then Tier V seemed to be the sweet spot. Heavy tanks were still heavy enough not to be one shot, but enough variation made vehicles stand out compared to others. Also winnings were decent. Playing higher tiers meant that even heavy tanks were pretty squishy and after a bad battle the repair costs would be higher than the winnings. How's that in World of Warships? What Tier is still fun to play without things getting too serious?

Thanks in advance!

Try few lines you might be interested yourself, grind them up to tier 5, upgrade them and play atleast 20-30 games in each, youll get the basic idea of how each class of ships is played and probably find something that suits you. Word of advice in advance, do not rush to high tiers, play mid tiers (5-7) before you understand all the details in angling, ship balistics and its strong/weak points after you find something interesting for yourself.

Hi there, welcome to the forums :)

First, Tier 5-7 is probably where you want to be then.

As already said, take your time into climbing tiers, so that you can learn and also get more experienced captains.

For both durability and guns you may want to look at some battleships and heavy cruisers.

Note, however, than having lots of rapid guns and survivability is usually incompatible ;-)

Especially, any cruiser caught at a bad angle by a battleship risks being severely crippled by one salvo, if not outright sunk.

So, for battleships:

US BBs at T5-6 (New york and new mexico) have many guns and rather good armor. Slow as bricks though :D

RU BBs are a strong line for now, good armor (don't broadside too much though), accurate guns.

Germans are the most tanky especially at closer range, but guns are few and not accurate.

French have lots of guns at T7 especially (16 !) but meh accuracy too, and they are not very sturdy.

As premiums go Scharnhorst may be a good fit for you: a decently tanky battleship with faster reloading guns than most.

It's T7 though, so you may want to wait a bit.

Go with the French Battleships.

They perfectly suit your playstyle.

They are not too slow and sluggish.

They have smaller Gun Caliber.

If angled they are very tanky and hard to citadel.

They have good AA.

The fact that you favor in survivability kinda Limits you to battleships in WoWS. Since almost every cruiser can be oneshot.

Hi there! Having played WoT before (30k battles) before I changed to WoWs I am quite sure that T5 is not the sweet spot in the later. Comparing earnings, xp gain and matchmaking I think the sweet spot is more like T6 with a strong tendency to T7. A maximum of T7 also protects you from the dreaded T10 matchmaking.

However please don't try to rush to the top. Up until T4 you will get protected matchmaking, i.e. you will not see higher ships than T5. Once you go to T5 you will experience normal matchmaking and can meet up to T7. Take all ship classes (destroyer, cruiser, battleship and even carriers) for a spin to get a grip of the mechanics. Even if you don't like a class it will at least provide an idea how you will need to play against it. Take your time and bring at least one branch each to T5 before moving on.

If you want durability you should probably go for battleships. While heavy cruisers can be very sturdy too, they are harder to play and almost absent in the lower tiers. Destroyers are there for the ninja stuff (scouting, smoke, throwing stars and death attacks) and carriers are here to steal your jam and making others life as miserable as possible (and carriers also play radically different).

Regarding premium ships, if you plan to invest it is the German T7 battleship Scharnhorst that is generally considered a very good deal. It is fast, tough, has decent anti-air, lots of fast firing albeit small caliber guns (which can be a problem versus some cruisers and other battleships), handles very good and even features short-range torpedoes. And at T7 it will provide decent earnings in silver and XP.

Keep in mind that a premium ship will accept any captain, no matter if he is specialised for destroyer, cruiser, battleship or even carrier (this is a difference to WoT where a light tank crew could only transfer into a premium light tank), so always choose your premium ships for the nations that you want to play. So if you go for the Scharnhorst I would recommend to take a look at the German tech tree, who has decent destroyers and cruisers, excellent battleships, however no carriers. Otherwise I would suggest to take a look at the Japanese tech tree, who have very good destroyers, good cruisers, good battleships (from T5 onward) and also good carriers.

Cruisers or Battleships is your best bet. Don't rush up the lines, take your time. It's always worth joining a clan if you can. That can be very helpful when sailing in a division as the more experienced will show you where you go wrong.

Always keep an eye on your minimap to see where the battle is. Don't camp and don't overextend........that is tricky to balance when you are new.

And welcome to WoWS. :Smile_honoring:

Welcome to World of Warships:Smile_honoring:

First of all, as @Azalgor said, try out some lines up to mid tiers to see what best suits you.

Form what I've read, what you want is kinda battlecruiser-ish, but since we don't have battlecruisers lines, here are the lines I'm suggesting:

IJN Battleships;

IJN Cruisers;

German Battleships and Cruisers;

I would also suggest you to try out the aircraft carriers too.

I'd also like to recommend you some premiums (wait until you feel comfortable with the main line ships to play them):

Prinz Eitel Friedrich

Sharnhorst

Dunkerque

I also recommend you watch, since you are a new player, the Community Contributors videos about the ships, how to play, how to aim, exc. and learn from them (Watch these CCs: NoZoupForYou, Notser and IChasegaming). I did it and they really helped me to be a better player. It will still take some time to implement what you've learned, but they'll help you a lot.

Thanks all. That's a lot of information, some overlap in the advices and some differences. I'll be trying out some different ships for sure.

Well, my favourite tank in WoT was the Churchill III. I was hoping there was any warship that shares similarities :P

As for the premiums, I see the Scharnhorst is recommended by a few. It being a Tier 7 ship makes it a tad more expensive than I had hoped though. Any recommendations for the Tiers 4 to 6 perhaps?

You are so new, I'd hang back on spending money or the like on a premium to be fair. Plus, you'd be putting yourself in a higher tier without the experience.

It took me a long time to get into this game properly. I enjoyed every moment, but in the early days it was just a case of running around like a headless chicken, but with a smile on my face.

I started with the Japanese BB line...

If you must get a premium....try this..König Albert or the Ishizuchi . They are relatively cheap and keeps you in the tiers you need to be to get a hang of things.

Well from top of my head:

* Japanese T4 BB Ishizuchi (available via doubloons from the tech tree; limited range, suitably fast and otherwise a very fun ship, 10 guns).

* American T5 BB Texas (good AA, 10 guns, very slow) or Russian T5 BB October Revolution (12 guns, limited repairs, still slow; both shop or via tech tree)

* UK T6 BB Warspite (tech tre via doubloons; few (8) but accurate guns but beware the very slow gun traverse, also slow) or American T6 BB West Virginia (shop, few (8) big guns but slow) or French T6 BB Dunkerque (fast, all forward guns (8))

I can't quite recommend the T6 Mutsu (no experience) or T6 Prinz Eitel Friedrich (horrible guns).

Whatever you do don't by now but wait a couple of days! There will be a aniversary upcomming and it usually has huge discounts for low level ships (up to 50%) and moderate discounts for higher ships (30% up to T7 or 15% for T8).

survivability = battleships. small guns = light cruisers, very hard to find a mix of the to

Id recomend RU Battleships , aiming for the IZmail.

that starts you on RU cruisers which are a little down the fast firing end 8 second reloads with good balistics a good starter place.

and the french BB line aiming for the lyon is fun to.

EDit t4-6 Premium

t6 Graf spee 6 accurate BB guns on a heavy cruiser with torpedoes, pretty good and unique ship

t6 Hunghe - might be a controversial pick as its mostly slated , but it has 6 accurate fast guns that are great for learning to shoot on , a creeping smoke screen torps and great AA for its tier. i really enjoy it.

t5 Exeter - RN cruiser with some of the best guns in that range

t5 USA BB Texas

t4 Yubari- again controversial pick its not that great a ship , but you have 2 turrets fast accurate almost no dispersion guns on a fragile ship , this will teach you cruiser skill of maintaining optimal range dodging and returning accurate fire.

only listed those i own.

Thanks for the heads up! What would be the best way to get notified of discounts?

As anyone else said, do not buy anything yet. I would even recommend waiting for black friday or xmas, or just by chance the coupon will drop. Never be in a hurry to buy a premium ship.

Taking under consideration that I was able to lose money at T5 in WoT, then I would assume T7 will be for you.

If you would like a challenge then ocasional T8 with horrible MM.

But as anyone else said, do not hurry. If you want survival and (relatively) fast guns, then probably Scharnhorst is really for you.

Do you play via Steam? If not change that. You are very fresh and you wouldn't miss any nameable progress. With Steam you get both discounts Steam and normal.

We silly veterans only get WG discounts so nothing relevant....

There are also plenty of vids on youtube that show you how to play each ship and what the different classes are expected to do.

Most importantly, don't listen to toxic players on the messenger and have fun. :Smile_Default:

No I don't play via Steam. I've created my wargaming account a long while ago since I played World of Tanks quite a lot. Also tried World of Warships in its early days before it hit Steam.

Aside from discounts, is there any other advantage for playing via Steam?

One other thing of note, I don't know how exactly the "recruiting system" works nowadays and if you are eligible at all, however it may be worthwhile getting an invite by an experienced player in order to receive free goods and even premium ships once you reach certain milestones!

No its mostly very good offers you dont get from WG via normale Account. Like SummerSale with Prem ships below 10€. I can only say if i had below 1k games i would switch to Steam.

Discounts alone are huge. Switch to steam before it's too late. Steam discounts are immensely effective depending on your region.

just as another piece of the puzzle - once you're into the game a bit more, you could consider downloading the Public Test Client. That'll allow you, whenever a test is running (which usually happens every few weeks), to try out higher tier ships "for free" to help you decide whether you like them enough to grind for them. And there you also really dont have to worry whether you're "good enough" for high tiers yet - the standard of play is very different because lots of newer players use it like that :Smile_teethhappy:

Hi and welcome to the forums.

My advice would be to try as many nations and ship classes as you can, to get a feel for what you like and suits your play style. Watch some streamers and you tube reviews of the various nations and lines so you can see what  their main traits are.

But above all else, don't rush up the tiers too quickly, you will simply get frustrated. Don't worry that you don't think you are strategic, the more you play, you will start to understand what to do. And the minimap is the best tool you have in game make it big and try to keep track of where everyone is going, during the battle.

Have fun .

So regarding your original question. For durability BB's have the highest HP pool, best armor and a heal. For a good, fast-paced PEW PEW experience Cruisers ate the best, however they can easily be one-shotted (Yes, even from full HP) by a BB at almost any range, it's a very high risk, adrenaline-packed playstyle. On the other hand, to do well in BB's you will need to have good situational awareness and strategic thinking, so that might be a bit of a drag.:cap_hmm:

I would prolly recommend either German, French or Russian BB's for the very same reasons the others have already pointed out. US are good also, but their speed at lower tiers is rather depressing up to tier 7 - After that they get real good tho. Avoid the Japanese BB's until you have learned more. They are good with (in general, relatively) decent speed and accurate guns, but mostly tend to work best, as long-range snipers and are not very good at brawling.:cap_cool:
