Hi @mtm78, of course I'm for real.......are we misunderstanding each other here somehow. Easy done, when we are not have a proper conversation.

Please don't get the wrong end of the stick here, I'm not for one second saying they are stupid or thick. That is so far from the truth.

My experience with autistic kids in our special needs school in Aberdeen. A lot are not in touch with reality at all. Some wear helmets to protect themselves and so on.

I have two boys whom are both autistic. Both started out in a Special needs school. One however has managed to adapt and does very well in a main stream, however my other son struggles to speak properly and will need support for his whole life.

I was merely trying to point out that it is not right to say most autistic people are clever/genius. I tend to get people saying such things when the subject is broached as they expect my children will be fine as they will be genius. That is all I'm saying.

I think this conversation may have got a little off topic and I apologise for this.

idk he didn't say most did he? he said he found out irl that many can be clever, yet you found yourself called for jumping in and trying to disprove his statement.

no not many autistic children have just autism, those needing to wear helmets to protect themselves have more problems as only being in the autistic spectrum.

that seems to distort peoples perception a lot, and you repeating this isn't good imo. as i said, 98iq tell me again my kid is not clever. he is not a genius but he is very clever and that does not need any correction. and yes my kid is a classical autist, he is just not retarded.

i do understand your frustration, you just choose the wrong way of expressing it. anyway i cant even type proper responses on this kb so i am feeling a bit frustrated about seemingly being unable to communicate better... which is a trait much more associated witht e spectrum as 'not being clever'

shall i show off my autism and say thank you, even while my spidersense thinks your're not entirely truthful? I almost feel like that would be an insult but hey you're giving the option for a reason right...

thank you for your understanding and your admittance 9ff being wrong. now before we get back on topic could you please tell me one more time how I am right, just because it would mean something to my son if he would ever read this lateron ;)

Gosh @mtm78......you are relentless. Like a dog with a bone.

Firstly, lets be clear, I never said your kid was not clever, I never would.

I am talking from my own experience when I meet people that find out about my kids. They say things like.....The Rain Man for instance, or that a lot of "Autistic people are clever/genius".

Where we differ is down to how you perceive the word clever. I see it more like in the realms of being above normal intelligence. So with this in mind you could truthfully call a genius a clever person.

It is a misconception was all I was saying, some are for sure, but then some 'not' autistic people are also clever/genius so there is no connection between being autistic and being clever.

You are right in saying that they are NOT retarded, and I agree with you. I also did not say that autistic people were retarded and I think that you think that that was what I was getting at, not so.

Please let this be the last we talk of this. I have so much empathy for disabled people you would not believe, so it hurts me to think that you think I'm getting at you.

Look, I'm sure no one else wants to read this.....

Your perspective is not mine, if you post yours I post mine that's how this thing works. And someone said: many autists are actually clever, and you jump in say this is a myth.

So yes, I am relentless is saying that it's as much a myth as saying autistic people are retarded. You then mention your experience in a special school with kids having to wear protective gear and I just point out that those children do NOT have JUST an autism disorder. It's not that hard to follow what I said I thought but it seems I been wrong.

And no, clever does not mean you have to be of above average intelligence, and even if it did, there are plenty of people in the spectrum who'd still qualify. That's like saying the average person can't be clever. The average person is less clever as an above average intelligence persona. but it doesn't mean that in each application the more intelligent person would come up more clever solutions to the same problems presented to them.

You're more bothered by those references while I am not, it just shows the lack of understanding of what autism is in those people. Autism is nothing more as a brain which is wired differently, with different centers of the brain being more or less active while performing the same tasks as a neuro typical person. So even if everyone was Raymond, they would not be 'fine'. He was socially incapable of caring for himself,, that is what autism does, it does not mean that if you can count cards or do math really fast in your head ( you know what I already said, savants ) you can 'succeed' in life based on that.

The social limitations of not understanding those unwritten rules and not understanding social queues or even body language is already hard enough, not every autist is Rainman and by god I wouldn't want to be either.  But lots of people in the spectrum have an uncanny affiliation with for instance some programming languages / paradigms. Now if they would be good managers, probably not you need people skills for that, but a 'code monkey' can be a dreamjob for an autistic kid ( mine wants to learn to program games, so we're working with Gamemaker Studio doing small projects to get him te see what processes are involved in making games ).

I don't get mad at people saying 'ow but he's smart he will be fine', I just tell em being smart or not isn't really relevant, even the smartest autistic person is still an autistic person.

Anyway...

I don't feel that you're getting at me, I just dislike communication problems and I thought/think that's what we're having for the most part ;)

One of the small joys of being me is a certain lack of emphatic abilities.... but ye they might think we're actually mad at each other :) I'm back behind a proper KB now btw so I can finally type things in a way which isn't limited by my dislike for that small key bt keyboard actually only meant to start my htpc.

Anyway, besides that lower emphatic ability, I also do think that AFK isn't such an interesting topic either so there isn't much lost here. Give your kids a nice hug, I'll do the same with mine, and I hope you have a pleasant remainder of the evening o7

Hi @mtm78

What you wrote above, I completely agree with, apart from me having a lack of understanding. I have lived through 17 years with my sons and autism, so please, I need no lectures, but thanks anyway.

Hoping we stay on good terms, I'm at work so can't give you my full attention.

All the very best.....

I did not mean you, I meant most people in general do not understand what autism is, and thus have no idea what the consequences are. The lecture was in no way meant for you, I used

I been living with autism for over 40 years, and my son is 12 now, guess we both have a lot of personal experience in the matter.

Make sure your boss doesn't see you spending time on 'silly' things like forum when you're on the clock, and have a pleasant evening :)
