[WG] WG_Lumberjack WG Staff 2,392 posts 4,509 battles Report post #1 Posted August 29, 2019 Visual and Audio Enhancements Apart from the event activities, Update 0.8.8 also adds quite a number of technical enhancements to the game. In World of Warships, the various sounds of the game aren’t just there for functional purposes. They are used to recreate the raging atmosphere of clashes between the relentless steel monsters that dominated the seas. Explosions, main battery volleys, engines rumbling—all these sounds combine to immerse you in the intense experience of confrontations between warships. In the new Update, we’ve reworked the principles for the reproduction of sounds: Gunfire sounds have been "standardized," depending on the number of guns firing and their caliber. Engines will now produce different sound patterns depending on their power. We’ve achieved greater stability in the performance of the audio system, added new sounds and music, and reworked the ambient sounds—and that’s just for starters! We'll introduce further audio enhancements in the coming updates. The visuals of the game have been improved The following maps: Ocean, Big Race, North, Fault Line, Polar, and Islands, as well as the Philippines Port, have been updated to utilize the reworked lighting model. The skies on these maps have changed, too, in order to accommodate enhanced HDR technology that will add more contrast to the game’s graphics and create a more realistic look. Apart from that, clouds drifting across the sky on the reworked maps will now cast shadows on the water’s surface, ships, and terrain. In forthcoming updates, we’re going to enhance other maps and Ports, too. JollyDodG3R Players 32 posts 12,632 battles Report post #4 Posted August 30, 2019 Just checked the new audio on PTS. It is horrible. Please do not add these poor sounds to the game. Not enjoyable at all :(
Zuse Players 7 posts 6,738 battles Report post #5 Posted August 30, 2019 Sounds in Tech tree are very, very loud(and for my opinion, annoying. But with fast clicking can be mixed for fun)
Panocek Players 13,176 posts 13,617 battles Report post #6 Posted August 30, 2019 Mixed thoughts on AA sounds - large caliber lacks oomph, while mid caliber sounds more like drum roll to me. Why large caliber AA can't reuse sound of secondary guns? That and it would be nice to adjust acoustic as well visual "rate of fire" to be more fitting for the ship in question - Mutsuki putting out wall of tracers and firing sounds you would expect Iowa class to do is... eyebrow raising somewhat.
captainsyed2099 Players 6 posts 5,479 battles Report post #7 Posted August 30, 2019 As posted above the sounds lack a punch and has anyone realized? that in some ships i.e Yamato the gunfire sound gets cut-off like an edit. The AA caliber sure does sound different but lacks the punching sound for the flak AA guns as well as large caliber guns. World of warships primarily has big guns so the guns should sound as such, the sound of the guns for all the ships depending on the caliber of the main guns the airhorns need some action here as they need to be revamped. And as noted above the engine noise should be having a reduced effect, at least in the binocular mode as tho you are in a cabin.
[MA-GE] mrblueskye Players 93 posts 26,679 battles Report post #8 Posted August 30, 2019 I have to agree regarding the audio. It's awful; I had to turn the engine sounds right down while playing CV because every key press while controlling planes produced a high pitched whine. Very off-putting and not a worthwhile addition to the game. On the other hand, I have to commend the makers of the new port. Fantastic. The only thing that could improve it is individual ship names coming up on the brass name plate when the ship is selected.

[PST] Erik_Aukan Players 185 posts 18,660 battles Report post #10 Posted August 31, 2019 I needed to download the "extreme" sound package to be sure, but the gun clips sounds flat, and much less "boom". I really like the gun sounds on the current Queen Elizabeth and the USS Iowa. Please try to make them sound more impactful and powerful. The turret rotation sound may be adjusted to noisy at the moment, maybe for the test purposes. I think the sound uses too much compression, meaning flat sound. I know a lot of studioes uses this technique, but it is horrible and makes the sound become dull. Much like what destroyed digital music in the 90s. The ship horn sound is almost undetectable inside a battleship turret, but the gun firing sound is too similar to outside firing. I really like the gun firing sound inside the turret as they are today! They where SPOT on! the metal - rambling noise you get from inside the turret with today's current sound is very nice. I would like to keep a similar style inside the turret. I also think the gun fire sounds muted and flat. Certainly needs more dynamic highs and lows. Please make the gun firing sound more awesome! It is VERY important! More "BOOM", more rattling inside the turret (as is today, that was PERFECT) Rocket attack sound from fighter planes and impact are so low I can't even hear them. Very dissatisfying. I like the loud sound of today's impact sound. Bombers sound more awesome now! Can you also do something about the horrible horn sound on some of the aicraft carriers? they sound like a seasick cow in a sinking ship! Zuse Players 7 posts 6,738 battles Report post #12 Posted September 1, 2019 No sound for torpedo launch on RN DDs (tested Daring, Jutland, Lightning). Near explosions are to loud. Lot of disturbing noise, voice messages sometimes high, sometimes low. Maybe can help custom sound presets with more sliders for better tuning.
[A-Z] Amaha Players 292 posts Report post #13 Posted September 1, 2019 Engine sound after lowering the value to ~40% is ok, above that is horrible. Turrets turning sound is absolutely unacceptable (only bell sound on BB's MG is worts).

Especially on the battleships with slow moving turrets, having that noise for a minute or so. Bell sound on BB is nice though. Engine sound has an ok sound level at the moment, considering it is at 100%. I think that's ok
Imsali Players 266 posts 12,812 battles Report post #16 Posted September 2, 2019 Engine sound is too much, but I didn't realize it can be set lower. Otherwise I think it's great to have more 'realistic' sounds. On 9/1/2019 at 7:14 AM, wot_2016_gunner said: Just for comparison, here is the real life Iowa class battleships firing their guns. [FJAKA] _CHILE_ Players 88 posts 29,144 battles Report post #21 Posted September 7, 2019 I drive only CV,so want to tell about plane sounds. 1.current: When planes flying, sound of motor is like plain is on the ground, idling.. solution: Sound when plain is int he air should have that "loading" on the motor, and not like idling on the ground. 2.current: Boost sound is soooo terrible annoying that I am speachless. It sound like some japanese car Mazda with nitro started. solution: Sound of motor when is on the boost should have just sligtly more load on motor, like 5-10%.
Simonthdk Players 2 posts Report post #22 Posted September 7, 2019 I agree with _CHILE_, The sounds, atleast when playing a CV, is terrible - I really hope it wont make it into the live release. Its actually all of the sounds(when in a CV): cruising, boosting, attacking(rockets/bombs/torpedos).
[A-Z] Amaha Players 292 posts Report post #23 Posted September 7, 2019 Related to round 2. Engine sound is now ok and don't even need to lowering the value. Turrets turning sound is still disgusting (mostly because it's way too loud). Water and weather sounds are too loud.
SlightlyOff Players 149 posts Report post #24 Posted September 7, 2019 By and large, I actually like the new sounds I've heard so far, which is of course not very many, what with the low server population and this week's connection / routing issues or whatever. Even the AA sounds a little less annoying. This of course doesn't change the fact that you get annoyed by hearing the AA all the time, because you're under air attack all of the time, which is completely unfun and the opposite of engaging. Seeing the constant stream of AA damage numbers to aircraft is probably supposed to make players feel a little better by distracting from the fact they are being farmed by a CV without being able to do anything about it. Just like AA in gerenal. What they actually achieve though is to detract from the immersion and make the game even more arcady, which is bad. One of the biggest problems is how hard it is to get a good mix, since there are still no test buttons for all the different audio sliders and no manual or even a list of which sounds are controlled by which slider. Engine sounds are way too loud for my taste. Also many sounds often occur at vastly different volumes during the game without rhyme or reason. Also the creepy whispering voices in the designer's table port, I don't know what those are supposed to be (nor do I understand why he has those big paint cans on his table... is he remodelling his flat or something?) but the disembodied voices most strongly remind me of the voices of the dead in the underworld, coming from behind that veil in that Harry Potter scene in the Ministry of Magic. Completely out of place one way or the other. And also there's the fact that nobody asked for new sounds but lots of players asked for things like a demount all signals button. And of course they hate the aircraft carriers, which didn't stop WG from nerfing the AA to prop up carrier numbers again, which is disgusting. You should just delete the class already, and focus on actual feature requests.
SlightlyOff Players 149 posts Report post #25 Posted September 7, 2019 Sound volume is wildly inconsistent across different ships. Or possibly ship types. I had found a good mix for Shimakaze which also worked well on Daring, but on Conquerer the guns split my ear drums (especially since I'm playing with a headset like I suppose many people do) while the engine sounds were all but inaudible. Also there is sometimes a comb filter effect when there are multiple shell impacts, and the impact sounds themselves are also inconsistent in volume. The horn changes are all for the worse, they are too loud, the go on for to long after you release the N key and I also dislike the delay/echo effect or whatever it is called.
