Evenin' all.

A noobish question; got me Bert Dunkirk, and see that (at least mine anyway) is listed as specialising in Black Swan.

Firstly: what does this mean?

Secondly: is it possible to pry this tier 1 fanboy away from his unhealthy obsession with mediocrity, and have him specialise in something useful, like the ship he's currently in?

I suggest to take a look at all your captains sitting on silver ships.

Should be self-explanatory.

Yes, you can change that: It is called retraining...

I wasnt really in the market for a patronising answer, hence my posting this noobish question in the noob section.

Could you maybe try answering again, this time having extracted the sarcasm please?

I am literally none the wiser from your answer.

Specialization means what SILVER ship the captain trained for, so if it has a specialization for a certain ship and no free skill points (0/10) then you will need to retrain the captain for use on another ship. If it has all its skill points free (10/10) then retraining will not cost anything if you put it on another silver ship.

TL;DR Specialization is the silver ship the captain is currently trained on.

Premium ships do not require the captain to be retrained, you can just swap them over.

Ignore @ColonelPete hes just a wet moggy that didnt get his fish this morning.

@ColonelPete no need to be an jerk all your life, the image is kinda boring now. Find a new one....

Thanks for the answer mate, appreciated.

As the Transformers used to say at the end of a show:

"Now I know! And knowing is half the battle!"

The amount of free skill points is irrelevant. The cost of retraining the captain only depends on the total amount of skill points the captain has (i.e. his level)

If your captain isn't specialized for the (non-premium) ship he's on all his skills will either be disabled or operate at a 50% penalty, depending on the skill.

It's one of the things you can look up in the Wiki.

http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Commander

What you want to do is transfer old Bert to the intended ship, pay the 200,000 credits for the semi-accelerated retraining, then transfer him again to a premium ship of the same nation. Preferably one where at least some of his skills are useful and where he isn't lacking any essential skills for the class. Usually that means the premium ship should be of the same ship class. Bert won't lose his specialization to the new silver ship, and his skills are fully active on the premium ship, and all the commander XP earned in battles with the premium ship goes toward the retraining.

So the upshot is you complete the retraining on the premium ship, then transfer him back, and thus avoid playing any battles with impaired captain skills on the new ship.

I would recommend the following:

1. Wait until you get Fiji

2. Stick Captain Dunkirk on Fiji

3. Pay the 200,000 silver towards his retraining (25,00XP total iirc, so you'd chop that to 12,500). If possible use any Elite Commander XP to complete the retraining. If not do some battles on Exeter until your Elite Commander XP is enough to cover the difference.

4. Have fun.
