I do not think they enforce, or will, any specific game language. I find it extremely odd that people just insist on using their own language in a game that is supposed to have players working together for a common goal. Unless people are of extremely young age, or over 80, I see no reason why people can not use English. Everyone today have some basic grasp of English, like 'please come', ' I go', 'stop'. At the most basic level. But even here in major countries, in Europe, where the educational system is way above average they still insist on using their own language.

If you spent a little time looking at the forum, you'd find a post marked Game Rules http://forum.worldofwarships.eu/index.php?/forum-120/announcement-17-world-of-warships-game-rules/

6.02. In-game Battles: The preferred language is English, non-English is tolerated. Please be tolerant of those that have difficulty speaking English.

Finding it rude that somebody speaks a language other than English is absolutely beyond my understanding. Who cares what they're saying, they're obviously not talking to you or have any interest in team-play. If the language were enforced, they wouldn't speak at all or very little. Does it really matter that you cannot understand whether you or your team is being flamed? Do you NEED to know if someone is talking bad about you on the internet? Ignorance is bliss, I say, generates less hostility and toxicity.

Have you considered that maybe not everyone speaks English and they might be thinking exactly the same when you say something?

The perks of being a very culturally diverse continent: Some people will speak a language you don't and vice versa. WG say English is preferred but they (quite wisely in my opinion) don't outright ban other languages from chat. They even have seperate forum sections for some languages.

Or pirate. See below for a few examples.

1. Shiver me timbers (it's cold)

2. Aaargghhh (hello)

3. Davy Jones locker for me (I'm sinking)

4. Pieces of eight (credits)

5. Avast (ahoy)

Hope this helps.

It is a very peculiar quirk of us British that we insist others should learn English, but refuse to learn other languages. Its no ruder for someone to speak in German or Polish or French or Italian in chat than it is for me to use English. Europe comprises of 56 countries and more than 24 languages, of course not everyone will speak the same thing.

It's not rude at all to speak a different language infront of them >.> infact i find it more rude when people complain about the lack of a common language, and even more so when they start insulting the players who can't speak their language...

There's never going to be "one" language in the chat, and as more people arrive into the game, the more diverse the battle chat is going to get. Although i'm pretty sure english will still be the most-spoken language of the lot of them.. even if it just ends up with people swearing at each other >.>

If you haven't played World of Tanks get ready to be really disappointed at the level of cooperation here as a result on no common language. Having played on the US server a little(within WOT)it is stunning how much more cooperation there is, even in the lowest tiers. I guess the bottomline is its just the way things are on the EU server, perhaps one day they will be able to subdivide the EU servers, but seeing as WOT haven't done that yet it would seem unlikely and years off.

To be honest, maybe just 1/3 of the spanish people I know have learnt some basic english. Around 1/10 can hold a conversation in english. Although we mainly use TS or skype when on division to not bother in the chat.

The few times I've written something in spanish on the game chat is to just joke around or say hi to someone I know.

I've been lucky enough to travel around the world watching F1 races as a paying spectator.

I met some people from Quebec and they were friendly enough, one spoke excellent English and the other one tried but only had a few words.  These were guys in their 20s as well.

So, it's true not everyone can converse in English.

At least many Brits feal guilty for that. The French tend to stick to their language out of pure maliciousness...

Unless there is a specific chat channel for specific languages, then I see no problem in people using other languages. But if there is a german language chat or spanish chat or something like that, then I would prefer if those languages were spoken in those channels. It prevents channels from being full of words that a lot of people might not understands, and it becomes a lot easier for everyone to find people they can talk to in their own language.

Ofcourse this isn't something we have in battles, so there I don't really care. Allthough I would wish that people who can understand would sometimes reply to strategies and so on. In any case, being open to other people and talk with them can be a lot of fun.

Speaking of chat, has anyone been able to use any chat outside of battle for a while? Mine still says 'we are working on it'.

Don't we have the chat and channels on the lower left corner of the screen?

When I open it, it just says 'we are still working on it' and that's that.

I had a chat with someone yesterday after a battle.  It was abusive from the other player though.....

I only remember one line of French from secondary school and that's "Je deteste les Francais!". Only way to hurt the French is to insult them in their own language. Or make fun of their cheese. Or their rugby team. Or their inability to win any war by themselves (French revolution was technically a draw seeing as their opponents were French). I could go on but....

You can chat player to player and in divisions, but I don't think there is a general chat channel yet.

There are channels there - 'Battle Results and Discussion' and 'Off Topic' discussion (amongst others) and the off topic works OK - I could post in it,

Well, that's strange... it's fully funtional for me, it even has oficial channels for each linguistic comunity and for asking questions and reporting bugs.

I wish it were true, but it isn't, it's mostly because the knowledge of english within our general population is pretty pathetic, especially when compared to, say, scandinavian countries, or benelux.
