Wichita VS Alaska

Hey!

Been thinking about buying a higher tiered ship for moneymaking now that I've actually grinded my way to a tier 8, and I'm in constant need for cash. I'm  also going through these Fly! Strike! Win! Challenges and seemed like a good time to buy one.

What I was wondering was if anyone had any thoughts about buying Wichita VS Alaska? I have 250k free xp, so won't be able to buy it for free xp any time soon anyways. If I'm gonna spend money anyway €40 or €60 doesn't make much difference to me if the €20 gives me more money/enjoyment anyways. Read about both of the cruisers, but can't seem to make up my mind. Might just wait if people think the Alaska is more fun/easier to earn money with as I've played a couple T8 matches and do kinda realize I need some more practice for the higher tiers.

Wichita is a ship that is worse than the T8 silver cruiser Baltimore. It has worse radar and guns, with nothing really better or outstanding.

The Alaska shouldn't be compared to Buffalo, the T9 silver cruiser. Alaska is a ship in  a class that is very badly categorized in the game, as it is bigger and stronger than most if not all T9 cruisers.

I own the Alaska and can say it is a solid ship that can carry its weight. I do not own the Wichita, as I already own a Baltimore and have no need for a weaker ship that costs cash.

If the 20€ aren't making a difference, go for the Alaska.

Wichita is a solid if somewhat uninspiring thing to play.

Alaska is effectively a battlecruiser.

Have both, prefer the gameplay of Wichita myself, but recommend Alaska as being the better of the two.

I don't have the Wichita but would recommend Alaska over any other ship in the game right now. She ticks all the right boxes and is a good crew trainer both for cruisers and battleships while giving better credit gains than T8 premiums. If the extra 20€ isn't any problem the choice is a nobrainer, Alaska every day of the week!

Hiya,

Looking at the ships you currently have, I'd recommend grinding through some cruiser lines first. Most of your battles are between tiers 4 to 7. I feel you would be better off playing through some ships and grinding some tech trees and moving up to the higher tiers, before buying a high-tier premium.

If you are short of cash and plays decently much, if you like the game premium time (especially when on special offer) is a sure way of improving the cash flow. Consider this: If aftergame costs in  mid tiers makes you break even on F2P mode at T6-7 the Premium time makes your credits go up 50%, it can cover premium consumables better also if you invest some of the surplus in that esp. DCP and Repair. Longer in game = more damage more cash.

But all other things equal say 100 K service  Income 105 K  = 5 K Profit Premium 100 K service 157,5 K Profit (better if its WOWS only I think) 57,5 Profit thats 11X more. And when you finance T7 ships yto T10 you will find when you get there that they cost a lot, 20-30 Millions at the top, so if you ot already have it consider that as an option.

Take advantage of missions that gives free premiums. Now to answer your original question, if money is not an issue, Alaska may be better I have her as a collector but I had the FreeXP, The T9s are not the first Premiums I would have bought.

Old WoT veteran here, so I've learned to never play without premium. I have a couple T7 premiums, Sims, CBT pre-order and Blyscawika, but I just feel like I'm missing out on quite a bit of cash compared to T8, even with tons of flags and good games. My only problem is that when it comes to cruisers, my highest premium is T6, and they loose out on even more cash. Thought about buying a T7 for now, but that didn't seem like a good investment as I would probably ditch my T7 premiums for a T9 premium later down the line anyways. Thought it was better to just go all in and pick up one expensive €60 now, than buy premium-ships equal to that price over time. Already have a WoT garage full of T7/T8 premiums, trying to avoid the same "mistake" here. :)

This, this and more of this. If you want to purchase something, purchase premium account and play silver ships good old fashioned way. And should you get yourself tier 10, for 5k doubloons you can purchase premium paint, which turns T10 of choice into basically premium ship economy wise.

Wichita is meh, just get silver Baltimore, especially as Fly Strike Win gives perma camo for her (and US CA line in general). Alaska is battlecruiser/large cruiser, which is acquired taste I'd say. Big, but not big ENOUGH guns to actually matter, while ship is big and clumsy

AFAIK T9 Freemiums after Missouri earn only slightly more than T8 premiums, which in turn don't earn much more than T7s.

So, while you're not technically wrong by purchasing most expensive to get the most out of her, diminishing returns exist I'd say. Strapping existing premboats you have with credit flags and going after destroyers and caps might solve credit issues. After all, %hp dmg done matter not dmg total, thus, literally, shoot the smallest ones.

Thank you for all the replies here, I have however come to realize that my in-game 25% coupon for ships will "renew" on the 23rd of June this year if I use it now. So I'm better off just buying the Atago as it will be substantially cheaper than both of the options I've listed in this thread, and unlike the Alaska, it will actually be the same tier as my highest tier normal ship anyways, so I won't be any more annoying to my teams in a prem T8 than a regular T8. :)

In game coupon applies to Coal/Steel/other BS currency purchasable ships, not doubloons.

And Atago as fine she is, she is far from potato friendly

Ah, well. Yes, my bad. Just saw the "you have a coupon for this category" and thought it applied for all the ships. Well, guess I'll just take this thread into consideration and figure it out.

And yes, I have heard about the Atago and her "problems", and even though I wouldn't consider myself a great player, I'm also not a total potato.

Being a potato aside, T8 ships suffer from T8TM matchmaking, so even if you will manage decently in her, it most likely will be exercise in futility and rage. That and she doesn't have good range to do *something* if green team isn't willing to get close(r) and personal and most definitely, doesn't have AA so you will be prime target for any carrier, more than happy to share flying love with you.

Wichita has the (as of this moment, merely potential) benefit of being allowed into operation Cherry Blossom, which could be a great way for you to farm credits. Of course this does not help you right now.

Wichita should print more credits than Baltimore should be able to.

I have the Alaska, but frankly, to me it doesn't seem as good at printing credits compared to JB. Credit income is based on damage and battleships seem to be a bit better at this.

The only problem for you could be that Jean Bart is French :Smile-_tongue:

And don't worry too much about it being a too high tier for you. I did get the Missery back when I was still at tier 7 at the most and boy did I mess up my stats from those battles I played farming credits! :Smile_teethhappy:    ohh well :Smile_hiding:

Anyway, I could recommend you to play Alaska in coop only for a while, at least till you consider yourself sufficiently skilled enough to take on the high tiers.

If you play this ship in coop, simply use only the free consumables and she will still make you money.

Alaska in itself is a pretty good ship, afaict. I like her and it's actually my preferred tier 9 premium right now.

Wichita only if you prefer to be the bottom tier  most of the time, because of the tier 8 wonderful MM.

With Alaska at least you will not be the bottom tier, that special place is reserved for tier 8...

Alaska every time, Wichita is just god awful, sail out and sink, I literally cannot do anything with this ship, partly why I have not gone on to get the Wooster, thats sip is so paper thin, I don't see the point, in fact it is only Brit cruisers I really like, but even then the Neptune and Mino are well not fun to play, other island camping, what else can you do with them?

First of all, a disclaimer. I do not own the Wichita, but I do have the Alaska. And from what I can tell, there is nothing special about the Wichita. Its just another island hugging American cruiser. The Alaska, on the other hand I've found can deal with anything as long as you play it aggressively. Fantastic American AP, HE for those pesky DDs, and they are no match with radar and hydro. As long as you can push, this ship is great fun play. Especially when you get to rush those campping Yamato's and other BBs

I don't own the Wichita but as people say I can get the Baltimore if I want that style of play. Alaska all the way. It can bounce 380mm which means the Jean Bart, and other 380mm gunned ships have trouble penning you from the front (broadside of course is another matter). She can burn a fair bit but I suspect you already know this stuff if you've done any kind of research. In a nut shell shes a solid ship and providing you spec her right, and play to her strengths she'll get you in and out of trouble. On a purely aesthetic note she's also a sexy beast.

Mount radar and some AA upgrades to farm the salty tears of your enemies?

Wichita is more nimble and sneaky than the regular American CA at the expense of having slightly weaker aa and main guns. I got her for free from a WG stream though so I enjoy the experirence more maybe
