The speedboost is to catch up to the players apparent position, since the "reserves" are trailing behind. If you watch the video the position of the player planes skips backwards before accelerating and playing "catch up" with the player. I guess it is done for fluency of the experience. Yeah we are getting superfluidly critical hits and fires while the AA is worthless. Ruining the experience for 90% of the players to keep 10% (and a single lead game designer) happy is a great idea. And the stuff players do and come up with does surprise devs. The last one i was around for had a pretty easy and straight forward infinite resource exploit...
