I myself already have the Salem, but if i didnt i'd still wait out the Yoshino. The Azuma was clearly going to be quite disappointing even on paper. Its a decent ship, but not what you'd like to see. 

The Yoshino on the other hand, will be an upgraded version of the Azuma in every aspect. It will have a quite okay dispersion value, along with a 2.05 sigma. not great, but doable. In addition, it gets 12km hard-hitting fast torps and they reload quickly (drawbakc: poor angles). 
Also, pretty uniquely for a IJN cruiser it appears to be getting good AA. 
Overall id say a pretty interesting and unique ship.

The Salem on the other hand is more of a "weird"  Des Moines- not necessarily worse or better, but less comfortable to play for sure. 

Final judgement could also depend on the cost for you, since Yoshino price range is estimated to be 250-350k coal right now

On the other hand, Salem feels too similar to Des Moines, maybe even worse at times. Not quite worths the coal if you already have Des Moines.

And Des Moines even has a pretty spicy Legendary Upgrade.

You can get a superior Salem (well, in most situations) by going down the US CA line while the Yoshino has no equivalent (yet).

 

As such, you should totally buy Salem .

Don't, i mean don't get the Salem.  It's 100% not worth it when you can grind a free Des which IMHO is BETTER.

 

Don't entertain the idea mate. Unless you have no intention to grind the US crusier line ever.  

 

However the US Heavy Cruiser line is a good grind all in all. Solid,

 

The Yoshino is just simply better (alot) then the Azuma.  Either way the Balance-grad is still the number one ship at tier 10 premium wise.

Flamu tends to like to play supertest ships a LOT. If they are released, you can be almost dead sure he will be playing them and trying out their excellent armor

I got Salem and it's definitely a good ship, but the radar is pretty circumstantial due to its limited range.

 

I only played DM on PTS and that was a long time ago. But Salem is definitely a good ship for playing in randoms and got slightly better economics compared to a DM with the 5k doubloons permacamo.

Since Musashi removal was announced I was able to collect enough coal for: Musashi, Okt. Revolyutsia  and Salem plus I am currently sitting on 217k coal. And I have started from almost ZERO.

 

With that being said - Salem is just different Des Moines ( I play mine with hydro since it goes on same slot as radar which is just 8.5km for 25 sec) 

 

I have Azuma .... Will get Yoshino right away also

Actually makes perfect sense.

Just one commander will fit both ships perfectly, you can alternate bnetween them and grind a tonne of elite commander XP while the Premium makes up for the credits lost by the silver version.

Also, if anything, Salem is more comfortable to play with that monster heal, same as Boise vs Helena.

Salem is worse Des Moines, Azuma is worse Ibuki.

Salem is a good ship for solo-randoms where your utility of the radar can be of questionable value if the team decides to simply not shoot at radared ships.

It's also a bit more survivable in open water gunnery with other cruisers due to the better heal, but as always with a Des moines you're going to suffer hard as soon as a BB starts shooting AP at you or anything else really gets a shot at your sides.

I generally don't see why anyone would spend that much coal on the Salam when the Des is so so similar.

 

Regardless if one is slightly better than the other (Radar vs Monster Heal).  Remember heals only works if your still alive to use it and don't eat AP rounds and many don't:

The worst of all tier 10 cruisers at the moment. 

 

I think its far too much coal for what it is.  But that's just my opinion.  It's basically a Des. 

 

Personally and that's just me, i find the longer radar far more valuable then the heal.  Not including the upgraded radar spot if you like longer radar. 

 

Especially in clan battles where radar wins games.

@Aotearas in Clan Battles, it synergizes well with an actual DM, tanking more than twice the damage of two DMs when they lock down a position together while the short range radar is less of a problem once they are being pushed.

 

Also a tankier partner for Hindenburg in a push/brawl.

 

I wouldn't have DMs on a CB team substituted with Salems but it can absolutely pay off to have one in the mix.

Or you can just kill a DD on your own without other ships.

 

If one cruiser can do that, the Des can (Mino when not smoke).

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I do rather covet Salem, but not because it's good (the majority opinion does seem to be 'naff Des Memes', with a few disenters); I'd like her entirely because she's the Cosplay Graf Spee!

 

I'll probably never be any good in these high tier cruisers, so I may as well get the ones that I like for other reasons...

That's one less Henry spot tho. 

 

Sticking a Des and Salam together doesn't do anything other ships cant.  It's still 27mm bow on and will eat all Republic/Yam shells all day long. 

 

Just gives DD like the Harra and Gros time to get even closer before stripping your health off. 

 

I don't actually think i even saw a Salem last clan session? I wish we did tho as it gives DD's more movement around the caps.
