Say you purchase a 10p captain (John Doe, Victor Znamenski, Bert Dunkirk) in the armoury for dubloons.

This captain is already specced to a tier 1 ship (Black Swan, Orlan, Eire) that you most likely never will play.

First thing you have to do is re-spec him for more dubloons to some ship that you will use.

Why not just sell him un-specced.

Kind of like having to pay for ketchup when u buy a hot dog

(is this WG being greedy)

You do not need Dubloons....

Well that is obvious isnt it

Thing is they sell him for dubloons expecting u to use more dubloons to respec him to a "useable" ship

Who is gonna buy (pay real money) a 10p captain and then retrain him over the course of many games

With 0.8.2 release should be another week (or so) free retraining period, unless WG cancelled that.

You mean captain WG keep throwing at me at regular intervals simply by playing?

They do not expect that, otherwise they would not give you the free option.

All captains have a specialisation, there are none without one.

Even if there were, you would have to retrain him from "none" to target ship. That is how the game works.

Yeah the free retraining is coming up

Yeah I have also got a few 10p captains with special skills for free (Yamamoto, Jean Jacqes Honore, Franz Von Jutland and some Chinese guy) however its way easier to get new tech line ships that need captains and the option of getting a 10p special captain for dubloons is good.

Not everyone has the time to grind or skill (Yamamoto, Halsey) / luck (Jack Dunkirk was before I started playing this game) to get these special captains so I can see why they sell them

I can highly advice you to get at least one 19pt captain so you can generate ECXP and retrain for free always :Smile_coin:

Most likely it's a technical problem. When captains first appeared, they were always recruited on a specific ships - and so a captain HAS to be trained for SOMETHING. Allowing them to be freely assigned after purchase would require some resources to actually develop the feature. And WG just saw no real benefit in investing these resources - they decided that just dumping such captains on the t1 of respective nation is good enough. Such a captain can be used on premium ships right away and trained for any other ship the same way you can train any other captain you'd want to transfer there.

To put it simply - no, it's not WG being greedy, more like "lazy" if anything, unwilling to have their developers spend time (read: burn money) on developing a feature that has no effect beyond saving some doublons/eliteXP/retraining time for people who buy (or receive from a mission) a special captain.

Also, from a practical point of view - if you want to buy a special captain, now might be a good time. In a week (after the upcoming 0.8.2 patch) we're going to have free respec+retraining for captains. So if you buy a captain and wait a week (or wait a week and then buy a captain) you're going to be able to circumvent the extra costs. Although it's this month's specific thing :Smile_honoring:

I was aware of that when I made the post.

I stated that it is strange that u can buy a captain that is pre-specced to a ship u will never use.

I wanted to know why ?

You REALLY can' figure i out?

Ok, let's take the US, there are four valid lines for the special captain, BB, CL, CA and DD. He has to be specced for something which one, the T4 BB, the T7 DD? Also it's viable that a person buys the captain to start  new line.

It's best to have each one specced for the T1 of the line, it's not [edited]rocket science
