Using planes from carriers to constantly spot opposing team .

Don't make this a flame thread please guys just say what you feel on the topic.

I was just in a DD and noticed I was being spotted in all areas of the map constantly (detected perk unlocked). The CV on the other team was sending his squadrons around the map and using them to light up my team without trying to cause damage to them.

Is this something you have or would do?

We didn't have a cv due to the mm so his planes were doing circuits around the map with no real threat. He was honest and said it was his intention to do this and it worked really well for his team. Even as a dd I was unable to make any real impact as I was on the defensive all the time due to being spotted.

So do you think this is a valid tactic? I have a good win rate and feel like a competent player but being on the end of this tactic was hard to take. I know it's not cheating but it felt really op if that makes sense.

Im not complaining because I lost, I've just never seen a CV used in that way and want to know if people have seen this before.

I have seen it happen a bit.

But with all the scout planes about, and often 2 carriers in a team, there are planes everywhere on most maps anyway.

It does make closing for a torp run in a DD bloody hard though.

It is a valid tactic! As long as there is no other carrier in the other team, your fighters virtually serves no other purpose than scouting. As a CV, in this situation I try to constantly light the vicious DDs closing by so they can't torp my BBs. (But I attack with the other planes, I need some xp!)

Diving bombers are useless anyway so carriers are parking them on top of destroyers.

Seen it happen lots of times. Gives one side an huge advantage which is wrong. It's a valid tactic but only if both sides have a cv. I was in a carrier and the enemy had a cv while we didn't, there was nothing to stop his torp planes which destroyed me in two salvoes along with one bomber squad. My AAs didn't even help even though I shot down 5 planes. Was in my Mogami.

So this is a common tactic?

Keeping bombers over targets rather than unload and return the carrier?

The play style isn't my thing so I've not unlocked any carriers yet.

That is a perfectly valid tactic, use fighter as scouts if they got nothing else to do. What you need to remember is that carrier needs to constantly micromanage those fighters.

I usually just set them over bottlenecks so I can always cover my side of the map, or over friendly battleships that are sailing alone.

when you use an air superiority focused layout on carrier, and end up having no opposing carrier only option left for your fighter planes is the scout for enemy, its normal and legit. In reality carreirs had specialized scouting planes too, so when you have no uses to your planes in terms of battle, why not use them in a more better way... meanwhile not being able to do much damage causes a huge drop on XP and money as a tradeoff for this strategy...

Well, DBs barely do any damage, so guess some smart players used some creative solutions for them. Not really common in low tiers (I don't play high tiers anymore).

I suppose he might have had a mainly fighter loadout, so with no enemy CV they are pretty redundant except for spotting.

Thanks guys, always good to learn stuff.

So planes you use to spot like bombers or fighters when you have no opposition can just fly around all match? Do they have a time limit before they have to return?

No they don't have time limit.

And before anyone thinks of suggesting a nerf, DDs are getting buffed next patch.

The lack of carriers which you experienced will most likely fix itself with the extra influx of more players during Open Beta or Release.

Also, it kinda fazes that someone would think that something like this would be illegal in the game :D

Well, in WoT people always complain remark about stuff that kills them or makes it harder. Like Artillery, or Tank Destroyers camping in bushes. ;-)

Are you a time traveller? Because the preliminary patch notes posted by Tuccy doesn't say anything about it.

When playing my CV I always send my fighters out first to "Spot" any ships for my side! Then I position my torpedo bombers accordingly.

No return time unless engaged with enemy fighters.

making torps less detectable from planes is still a buff :)

And making scout planes radius bigger is still a nerf.

Also, no real problems with the high tier DDs were acknowledge, again.

Presumably the longer AP fuses so more likely to overpenetrate for minimal damage is a buff too. The extra HE damage is the counter nerf, but will those BB actually switch to HE instead of just shooting AP as standard

Its a valid tactic and good play on the part of the carrier player, its just the matchmaking needs a little work and/or more players available in carriers to make sure your side has a carrier who can try to counter it by engaging the planes. Alternatively get some AA cruisers to shoot them down.

Point out where it was called "illegal" please?

I think spotting like this should give exp to carriers.
