Prototype Heavy Cruiser class icon. Double thickness between division of Cruiser icon, to denote additional weight but not two lines to denote a Battleship.

This class change would apply to:

FURUTAKA

AOBA

MYOUKOU

MOGAMI

IBUKI

ZAO

ATAGO

PENSACOLA

NEW ORLEANS

INDIANAPOLIS

BALTIMORE

WICHITA

BUFFALO

DES MOINES

SALEM

KRONSTADHT

STALINGRAD

ADMIRAL GRAFF SPEE

YORCK

ADMIRAL HIPPER

PRINZ EUGEN

ROON

HINDENBURG

ALGERIE

CHARLES MARTEL

SAINT-LOUIS

HENRI IV

Why the Change?

The main reason to propose this change is because of matchmaking. Heavy Cruisers have the ability to replace a Battleship, taking a Capital Ship spot. This cannot happen for the first position of the matchmaker, guaranteeing at least 1 Battleship or Carrier on each team. Whereas today you'd get something like

5 Battleships

4 Cruisers

3 Destroyers

Adding Heavy Cruiser as a separate class allows for something akin to

1 Battleship

3 Heavy Cruisers

4 Light Cruisers

4 Destroyers

If there are not enough Heavy Cruisers in the MM pool to create a pool with CAs replacing BBs, the matchmaker will add BBs into the slots where Heavy Cruisers go, to reduce waiting times for the matchmaker.

I am all for having a BC line, but WG will probably do that once there are enough of them. However, separating the heavy cruisers and ranking them as something similar to a BB... uhm, no. Try facing a competent BB player 1 vs 1. Some CAs can do it, but most will die. The role of a CA is not to tank damage, but deal it (remember, I am not talking about BCs like Stalingrad, Kronshtadt, Moskva, Alaska etc).

If a Hinden or a Zao face a BB, they will most likely win by torp rushing him (or in the case of Zao even stealth torping). Try facing a BB 1 vs 1 in DM for example - you will deal quite decent damage but will die in 1-2 salvos.

Limiting BBs to 3 or 4 will already be a big problem, limiting them to just one is unrealistic. I think that MM, at least for high tiers should take CAs and CLs in consideration when creating teams but creating separate class, no I don't think that would be productive or even possible. Heavy cruisers basically started after ww1 and old armoured cruisers are not the same thing. Also lot of countries like Italy, Japan, Germany or Soviets would struggle to get enough ships for at least one of line. There would need to be a lot of paper and fantasy ships for this.

I doubt. Only two nations could bring BC line, German and Britain. Japan have number of BC but they were already implemented in the BB line and removing them would leave gaps that won't be easy to fill. None other could bring even the half line. With new CV line with only even ships could bring more nations than BC lines. Creating a class for only two nation lines is pointless. Creating a separate branch in BB line for Germans and RN, on the other hand, is quite possible.

For Amagi you could always substitute with Tosa. Kongou is the greater issue but could leave the split from T6 on. Nr 13 fills T9, or T10, tiers 6 and 9 (or 10) would be open. Doubt it'd happen, but if that RU BB tree says anything then that WG can be imaginative when they want to.
