To Sims or not to Sims?

Since tech tree premiums are currently discounted, I was thinking of buying something, so I'm looking for player opinions. Is the Sims worth it?

What I'm looking for are crew trainers for my American DDs and German BBs/CAs. I've had my eye on Scharnhorst for a long time, and even though the Prinz looks like it could work fine as a trainer, I may just get it anyway. What I have doubts about is the Sims. Yes, I could use her in the Dunkirk operation to grind ad nauseam, but I'd prefer something that can work in randoms too, and Sims is at the most awkward tier for DDs, with the highest detection range without access to the concealment module. Also, with the CV rework looming, who knows what happens to the currently great AA Sims has? I would hate to spend my doubloons on a one trick pony only to have that one trick nerfed to insignificance.

The ship I would rather get is the Monaghan. One tier lower, so she has better matchmaking, option of different playstyles, what is not to like? Except she is only available through the premium shop. With luck she might become available through the tech tree or arsenal some day, but there are no guarantees.

Thoughts? Is the Sims worth getting, or should I save my doubloons for something else?

As a crew trainer Sims is ok.

I do not think she is anyting special.

She is defintely better than Monaghan.

The question is if it is not easier for you to train captains with Elite Captains XP as you have quite a lot of games.

Sims is great as a funship, as it has a hidden base XP modifier, so you can get some good results even when playing ok.

Monaghan isn't a good choice as a trainer. It's just a Farragut with one less gun.

If I had to choose i'd pick Sims any time of the day.

She definitely was back in the days, but I think at the moment she's been powercrept by other premium DDs, mainly in the field of detectability (6.6km vs 6.1 of Z-39 or 5.7 of Haida, just to make a couple of examples).

Still, Sims has a special spot in my harbour: she bribed my entrance in the Beta and I had tons of fun with her.

I stood before the same question and wanted to get me a T7 DD. So basically it was between Sims, Blsyka, Leningrad and Z-39. In the end I went with Z-39, because 2 of the guys I often play with, recently got it and said, its awesome.

But since you say, you are looking for a crew trainer: Sims has an advantage over all the other DDs in that sense and that is called "Operation Dynamo". Not sure if you are into that, but one round can get you 40...70k captain XP. So you can easily retrain captains on Sims or even use a dedicated captain to grind elite captain XP hardcore. If I wouldnt have Farragut and Mahan setup exclusivly for that purpose - I would have prolly gone with Sims. With its AA its the best choice for Dynamo anyway.

Imo, the best crew trainer is a ship you find fun to play and that allows you to get a 19 pt captain to get elite captain exp. And Sims is a case where I'd be reluctant to recommend it. It can be great fun, but only if you accept that the ship has some serious shortcomings and are actually interested in the few things she does reasonably well.

Sims has defAA, but I'd not argue that losing it would kill the ship, because while AA Sims is lulzy, I mostly use that just to avoid getting molested by CVs in my lolibote when CVs are present or to snipe spotter planes. If defAA becomes useless, sims would still get engine boost and Sims even without engine boost is a very fast and most of all agile ship. Sims with propulsion mod rivals RN DDs in agility, but with much better speed and can dodge quite well. For D knifefights, she's thus pretty nice and you can at times harass larger ships, though I'd not expect them to give much of a damn, as the shelling at range mostly is just annoying, but hardly effective.

The torpedoes are two choices of frankly awful torps, with either suicide range and bad damage/speed or long range and even worse damage and speed. Like, those long range torps don't even go into 5 digit damage potential.

What Sims also does well is team support, as you can lay great US smokes and personally, you don't really need them, as there's little point in just spamming something with your guns, compared to just trying to get somewhere else, spot, cap, throw out a few torps (the reload on them is ok)... If you have smoke, defAA, use your agility and speed to make up for concealment and go for the cap fights, the ship can do a lot to help others win the match and thus help you win the match and while it usually is an ungrateful job, Sims gets a higher base exp to make up for it.

I mostly would argue Sims is awesome if you play in divs. For solo-play, I'd really rather get the Monaghan or get a different nation, like Z-39, Haida, T-61 or indeed a different ship type like Scharnhorst.

And choice between DFAA or TRB in addition to a separate-slot speed boost.

Just got the Simms and Prinz in crates.

Simms feels old, tbh. It's not a true gunboat, and the torps are so hopeless you just spam them and hope.

Prinz is a great boat, but a heavy cruiser at Tier X is hard work. It's awesome when top tier, but that's one in twenty games at the moment.

The Scharn - that's a great boat, dispersion notwithstanding. With a secondary build it shreds anything DD shaped that gets too close.

Simms was a great little boat, I used to love the little figther.

Haven’t sailed her in a while though.

Scarnhorst? Don’t have her. But I’ll always prefer the Gneisenau, it’ll rip the Scarnhorst a new one.

We need to be careful now, as there exist more than one ship with Prinz in the name.

When it comes to Sims or not to Sims, I say Sims !

Once it was the fastest ship but it still has the great xp and credit farming capability.

BUT

if you can get the Kidd, get the Kidd.

Exactly the same by me.

Also it was always fun to equip all the flags and camos when there were a 3x xp weekend and farm 20k xps (which is not too special these days but was extremely satisfying 2 years ago)

I'm in a similar dilemma to buy a Sims or not with the 30% doubloon discount. But what we want to use it for is slightly different, and while I'm strongly tempted to buy it for myself I wouldn't advise you to buy it for yourself based on your requirements.

I actually like grinding Dynamo, and have recently worked up my first ever 19 point captain for the Mahan, who is fully AA specialised. Knowing the positions to take in that Operation means I can currently shoot down a decent number of aeroplanes and I've gotten so used to the gunnery that I also sink a lot of Schnelbotes. 3000 base XP easy. I'm now grinding purely for Elite Commander XP that can be used to train, re-train, and re-spec any national commander.

Having Sims would boost my long-range AA dps and allow me to shoot down more planes, gaining more XP. Plus the extra credit earning that seems to be baked into the Sims. I don't imagine using the Sims anywhere else when I can farm credits and XP in that Operation, but...what happens next? The CV rework could mess-up the way Sims' AA works. WG could make Dynamo unavailable, again, but this time because of its 'effect on the economy'. Then I'd be screwed, annoyed, and a bit out of pocket.

You have more options. If you really want to choose one that you'll always find a use for and is currently discounted I would recommend Scharnhorst instead.

(I'm thinking of buying both tbh).

If WG would stick with the lead ship of every class in the tech trees, then we would have three ships named St. Louis (or something similar).

Sims used to be one of my most played ships (well, she's still #3, but not playing her often anymore). She helped me a lot in grinding US DD captains. Still not a bad ship, but not great anymore.

I can't recommend the Sims. The concealment really holds her back when you combine it with catapult like gun arcs which compel you to get close to enemy DD to be fully effective in a duel. The torps are also bad, you either get long range but super slow ones that hit like custard pies or very situational short range torps that are only good when there is an opportunity for a point blank ambush. The only real unique selling point for her is the great base XP multiplier, but that doesn't factor in to making her a fun ship to actually play.

If you want a premium US DD I'd recommend the Kidd which is really solid DD with a slightly different twist over other US DD without invalidating your experience with them.

Concealment is power creep. 6.6km feels bad when you can face ships that are 5.4km...

However Sims handles very well, probably one of the best DDs in the game with rudder and turning circle.

The guns always track your targets despite the turns you can pull off and the DPM is nice too.

Yes the 9.2km torps are awful but that's balance I guess.

I still like mine despite everything. A lot of DD play is what you make of the situation rather than the ship.
