I use this setup also in clan battles. Perfect range and better speed. I'm in 68% wins with her in randoms. Almost all solo. I think my winrate in CB with her is close to same. Not sure where to check that tbh... (this season 66% in CB) If you can go 8.4km @ 71 knots you benefit from a faster reload @ 94.6 seconds and higher damage potential. I have adopted the shorter range and have for the last week or so played her the same as I play my Shimakaze with some great results.. Nice WR by the way... I am not there yet by a long shot but I am steadily climbing... One day..
[ADRIA] MMASK [ADRIA] Players 187 posts 9,877 battles Report post #27 Posted December 3, 2018 Damage should not be best measure of DD efficiency. We all love high damage numbers, but doing 30k on DDs and killing one or 2 is more important that hitting 2 BBs for 120k damage. With Harugumo, you will be mostly shooting BBs and cruisers, but not DDs. And the fact usually is, the BBs you hit with 4-6 torpedoes or farm with Haru were not a big threat anyway. Gearing is not top DPM DD anymore, not even if you spec BFT and gun reload mod, but it is still very powerful. If Gearing now only gets hit for 10% damage from BB AP, it is even better boat. I'd also add that Gearing can be easily specced with RPF for DD hunting, while in Harugumo to have RPF you have to give up IFHE or 2 lower tier skills. And in Harugumo, you can be dev striked by BB. Yesterday my Montana divmate smacked Harugumo for 21k damage in single salvo, 5 pens... To the OP, get both, but I really suggest Gearing first. Harugumo is a whole other game, and it is even possible Kitakaze is better.

FWIW I had my first taste of CW yesterday: compared to previous seasons, there seem to be a *lot* of radars around (I may have been unlucky, admittedly) - if that's the current meta, and you play CW, the extra reach of Gearing's long-range torps can give you options. Whilst it is true that the longest radar range you'll meet is (?) just over 11 km, you may well struggle to get decent shots with 10-12 km fish if you're having to manouevre around more than one radar ship (or worse). That said I suck at CW, so...
[PEZ] Yedwy Players 11,301 posts 39,484 battles Report post #29 Posted December 3, 2018 Any torps dropped at 10+ km are sort of lottery items but when you regurarly get at least 3 radars that cycle themselves over the cap(s) and at least one of them is russian with 11.7km range you soon begin to appretiate that range, you can drop them in advance to at least scare the cruiser back in cover even if they miss, might give you just that bit of extra time to finish capping or slip away from trouble, i tried shima with 8km torps in randoms and its doable but its just so much extra work for occasional extra hit so imo just not worth the bother

I hear Haru is pretty strong these days so may get slapped at some point. Never forget YY

A set up I use intermittently when not using Fletch torps. But according to some using the longer range torps in any way shape or form is stupid... Others prove otherwise. But what would us mere mortals know hey... 1
