Playing the Asashio is tough but rewarding.

I find that the limitations of the ship make it difficult to cap, normally i attempt to cap but have to leave as soon as i'm spotted as i can't contest.  I often get a lot of stick in chat and have to explain i have crap guns and can't torp anything other than BB's.

Just wondered if anyone else get this unhelpful commentary in chat from the uneducated?

I have the Asashio.

I like my Asashio.

But I never had comments on my gameplay in the Asashio.

Let's be frank. It's stupid to get your DD (any kind of DD) heavily damaged in the beginning of the game for a cap. A game can last up to 20 minutes. More than time enough to get your caps. Most of the time when i'm  spotted I'm out of the there. I always try to know my escape route before I go in the cap and I always turn my ship to have a quick escape.

Those snipping-BB-but-still-near-their-spawn-point can go get their early cap themselves if they want.

Asashio is very situational. Sometimes I get good results in maps with lots of small islands where I literally rush and ambush the enemy BBS but it’s only possible when there’s no radar ships.

Most of the time it’s trying to get myself into a position behind the enemy and torpedo them from their opposite side hopefully while they have tunnel vision over to the opposite side.

It really isn’t good at capping since it’s guns are absolutely useless.

Asashio is pretty easy to cap in, and comes from using and abusing it's concealment. For obvious reasons this presumes you outspot the enemy DD- don't apply this against kagero/harekaze

-make sure you have 5.4km concealment. This is the slot 5 equipment, some.camo that gives -3% and the tier 4 captain skill concealment expert. If you don't have those, go get them immediately.

-approach cap. Open water is asashio favourite, gives open line of sight, and nice field of view for torps. Means no sneaky island radars. You will need team mates, so don't go to one on your own.

- enter cap. Immediately turn around so now facing out of cap back the way you came in (slightly angled is fine). Stop on edge of cap, so you are just in it but facing out.

-Enemy DD enters cap. You know this because it becomes  contested. At this point enemy DD can either charge, or wait at edge undetected.

- If it charges you'll see them before they see you. Put your boost on and leave at full speed. This keeps them spotted with you not spotted. This means your team can shoot them. They generally will break off the chase at the cap edge anyway. Become undetected if you got spotted and turn straight back for the cap to spot them/contest again.

-If they sit there instead, slowly reverse across the cap until they become spotted. Stop when this happens.

At this point, the enemy DD had three choices: Charge, smoke, or leave. If they charge, follow the advice in the point above. If they leave, you get the cap. If they smoke you can continue sitting there and just wait the smoke out - they just lost their vision (you are still spotting for your team). While you wait you can happily torp any BB that you can see.

While they sit in smoke doing nothing they are useless. While you wait you're sinking BB.

Specwise invest 4 points to RPF. It will tell you where the enemy DDs are and where they are not for far easier cap contesting.

I played my 24 games for the extra 200% XP (thought I'd done the full 25 but hadn't) and haven't touched it since. Although the initial few games were fun, I prefer my gunboat DD's.

The guns are good enough (same as Kagero).

What sucks about most Asashio players is that they don't even try to use them.

If you can shoot and kite properly, they are completely sufficient for Randoms.

Just don't run straight into a gun-DD, and rather keep outspotting and kiting them.

Correction IJN DD players full stop.......

@Laurance_of_Arabia turn you stern to the enemy and try keep your range to above 6km you can win a gunfight at longer ranges the IJN DD guns are actually pretty good.

as for the Asashio. CA/CL are the main problem. Im probably one of the most prolific DD players on the EU server and have played Almost every DD on the Servers. But i did not buy the Asashio as CL/CA being immune to her is a game breaker  for me.  These UBER deep water torps not being able to effect so many ship types in game and  the guns being usable but as you say poor. Just douse not make her a DD that can be beneficial to the team.

To me she is a great ship killer damage Dealer (TO BB/CV) but her performance is just poor in many other of the roles a DD player should play.

I didnt buy ashashio either and idk if I ever will, its just 2 specialised a tool unless you have bb heavy teams all the time you will struggle to pull your weight, even more so now that lighning and cossack have almost identical stealth but normal torps and wastly superiour gunnery also harekaze is a jewl and i have one

What @Xevious_Red wrote.

Additionally: If there are many DD I often wait whether this cap is contested or not. And make sure you have support from your cruisers. Just slow down a bit to let them catch up.

I'd say, the best thing would be to nicely point it out what the limitations are, then ask for support for capping. Try find a friendly Cleve, Chapa, Edinburgh or some other supportive cruiser and coordinate with them. As @Xevious_Red pointed out, reverse into the cap carefully and do the spotting (you outspot everything not named Asashio, Kagero or Harekaze), for your cruiser that stays somewhat behind you. If you spot something, your friend can open up on it and give you the edge needed. You might even lay a smoke for them, if there is no decent terrain cover or the terrain cover still leaves them too exposed to shells lobbed over it. Something like a Cleveland can get a lot more use out of that smoke than you with your IJN lolguns. This might also earn you some karma points to keep the balance, as I expect that the ship gets reported a lot. Yes, it is difficult to cap in it, but the main thing is, you have to put in the effort to at least try get it done somehow, because it's the DDs role and your Asashio isn't entirely uncapable of it, when supported. It's the price you pay for being easily able to farm BBs and it's your responsibility to take into consideration when you queue up with your ship, how to be useful to a helpful team and not just gimp them. Because frankly, you are in a ship that noone forced you to play. You decided to risk it in random. It's your fault when you cannot live up to reasonable expectations, which include spotting and capping still. If the team is terrible and won't support you, then you can just play on your own judgement, torp and cap as you see fit.

I don't like the ship for the points @T0byJug mentioned, it feels too limited. Also I find the whole concept terrible (but I don't want to rant). Asashio's limitations basically need to be overcome by teamplay, which sadly often is a rarity in randoms, but still, as the Asashio player it is best taken care of by you to initiate the exchange in chat by looking for your most likely support and hooking up with them. It really can make a lot of difference, as this ship certainly is not the kind of solo carry Jack of All Trades that other DDs are (obligatory reference to Harekaze being such a DD).
