You see?! It is possible. And you do not even need a high penetration BB-AP-shell.

Have you ever hit the citadel on Großer Kurfürst? With what ships, and where do you aim in that case?

Seems impossible to penetrate.

It is possible, but rare. But hey, it's a german/high-tier BB, so why are you surprised?

Three ways:

- GK is turning towards you -> enables your shells to go below the turtleback straight into the citadel if you aim at the waterline

- through the bow/aft, exploiting a small gap between the turtleback and the citadel

- Graf Zeppelin AP bombs

Yep. With Yamato, Montana, Moskva and even Des Moines.

Insane you have managed to citadel it with Cruisers. Impressed^^

Bypassing the turtleback means you don't have to deal with all that belt armor, so the only things sitting in the way of delicious, delicious damage are the torp bulge and the citadel side plating. Most heavy cruisers can easily penetrate both if they're close enough.

Opportunities to do so are incredibly rare however.

Or the game just conks out and awards you citadels you clearly and mathematically shouldn't have gotten.

CF: Citpenning Montana with Neptune/Minotaur AP. Rare, but not to the point of being a once in a lifetime thing.

Yes, i believe its this. And i think they somehow screwed the Zao armor maybe?. Frontal citadelled it recently with Hindenburg, and today saw flambass doing it with Minotaur in his recent YT video.

Also ive been frontal citadelled in Roon by Gneisenau (even made a thread back then about it) and more recently frontal citadelled in Missouri from a Montana.

And on one day i citadelled Tirpitzes once in Hindenburg and the other time with Missouri, BUT i believe that was actually possible against semi angled bow, so maybe those were legit.

In the same way as Infiriel, I don't know where exactly to aim, but scored citadels on Großer Kurfürst with herself, Friedrich der Große, Missouri and Bismarck, always from distance (+15km). Haven't achieved it yet with the other ships I own within her MM spread that are theoretically able to (I hardly ever play with some of them, so there's that, or I use HE shells/bombs).

What surprised me was scoring a citadel on a Conqueror while playing GK yesterday night, at about secondaries' range. It seems that the stars were aligned for it. Well, they were aligned for the whole GK streak (80% WR, some Confederates, some Fireproofs, even a Kraken).

Salute.

Nope. Not that I know of.

Will still eat a fair amount of penetration damage, but HE bombs are superior in that regard.

A citadel hit is hard and where you aim depends on how far away you are. Citadels at distance are in my opinion luck because the enemy GK has the time to turn into or away from fire.

If GK is broadside to me I try to aim for just under the forward turret at waterline level.. If I don't citadel I can usually guarantee a 10k + hit with at least one shell...

I have never had a citadel from a straight on bow shot...

I've had 1 bow on citadel on a Bismarck while in the Roon and multiple with the Richelieu and Alsace on various German BBs, they all seem to happen when the shells hit under the number 2 or 3 turret, into the barbette  and give you a citadel though the shot is really just down to luck.

A few days ago I took one through the nose with my own Kurfurst, I wasn't paying any attention as I fired (you know, unicum habbits of looking around as the guns are reloading?) so I cannot even say where the hell one of these shells landed. It was done at 9km. If I was a betting man, I would bet my money that it had entered his ship through the barbettes.

Barbettes are nowadays considered part of the turret. Used to be part of the citadel a long time ago I believe.

Here's what actually happens (spoilered for length):

Spoiler

There is a small gap between the turtleback and the citadel side armor as seen here:

zkUWHRC.png

By approaching one at an angle and aiming for said specific gap through the bow/aft, you are able to completely bypass the turtleback and thus score citadel hits.

Please keep in mind that in actual combat this is by no means a reliable method. The angle you need to use is very specific, it took me ages to find it in the training room for those screenshots.

Going for the belt to score penetration damage is a far more reliable method to deal big numbers on KM BBs.
