When I do that in my Arizona, premium T6, I harvest FREE XP.  As well as training US Captains

That is why I say get a T6 (orT7 or T8) and not get a T5.

Important distinction. In a premium ship (as in a tech tree ship with elite status (all modules and the next ship in the line researched)) you earn XP that can be converted to Free-XP at the 25 XP for 1 doubloon exchange rate. Or 35-1 when there is an offer such as the one running between the 2nd and 9th of July.

Hood is good. Large turning circle, but 32 knots gets you through the turn nice and fast, she has a fast turret traverse to keep her guns on target during that turn, and she can wiggle her shapely rear to kite away from enemies. 15" armour piercing lacks some penetration as short-fuse (like most British Battleships aside from the Warspite) but as this does have improved autobounce angles you have little reason to ever use HE in her. The improved autobounce means you can damage more heavily-angled targets, the short-fuse means you can penetrate rather than over-penetrate less heavily armoured targets, and her HE is worse than the Queen Elizabeth or Monarch anyway which further reduces any benefit in switching. So the Hood is more of a classic AP-almost-always Battleship.

King George V is tighter turning, more heavily armoured, and 28 knots. Which is still faster then the Lyon, Nagato, Colorado, or Nelson, though slower than Gneisenau/Scharnhorst or the Hood. 14" short-fuse armour piercing can still do a very good job on broadside targets and having ten-guns and a 25-second reload compared with eight-guns and a 30-second reload compensates for her having smaller guns than the Hood. The main difference in playstyle though is that the KGV has the excellent HE of most British Battleships; you still don't have to worry as much as with some ships about over-penetrations but against heavily-angled targets there is a benefit to switching to HE and since the HE is so good there is less penalty to having it loaded even when AP would have been better. So although you should still be firing more AP than HE you would be using both types.

Thanks all.

The consensus of opinion seems to be to wait for special offers/sales and buy premium time or ships. I think I'll start with a bit of premium time to try it out and then maybe get a premium ship. I'm thinking of not going above T7 as I only play for fun and I doesn't seem like it will be fun playing the pros.

I would also suggest a prem ship due to it's ability to train captains. I've bought my prem ships trying to look for fun ships. What's the point of spending RL money on a ship you don't want to play in the end.

I realized quite quickly that I liked this game and that I would be playing for a long time. So I started my prem ship collection with a Kamikaze R, they were for sale right after a event where you could get one for free, but I was unlucky, started a bit too late and didn't have luck in the raffle.

Next I bought a Scharnhorst(almost got the Tirpitz, but decided to take Scharn and 30 days of prem) as I was going for the Bismark.

After that I got the Duke of York from a mission marathon, like how you can get the Indianapolis right now.

Currently my final purchase was Doubloons to convert ~200k XP to get the Missouri before they removed her from the tech tree

T8 is a two edged sword. Yes you have to fight T10's from time to time, but and it's a big BUT. At T8 you can install the concealment module, this is a huge boost compared to T7 and below ships, especially for DD's.

Edit: Yes, definitely wait for sales to buy ships/prem time. Last december I got from a sale 360 days of prem and 100 of each of the rare flags for a bargain price of 59,90€, that's basically 5€/month and 500 sweet a$$ flags to boost my credit and XP/FXP income

Edit2: Darnit, now I'm not sure anymore if it was 100 or 50 of each flag, but it was still a lot flags :cap_like:
