A little project...

I have started a new calendar - "This Day in History", basically, so far filling just first week... now... What about dropping suggestions on me here for events to be included? For inspiration the calendar so far is here:

https://forum.worldofwarships.eu/calendar/10-this-day-in-history/events/2018/7/

I do not want it to turn to long articles, but basically overview of things happening, with WWI / WWII focus. Anyone interested? :)

9 July 1940 - On this in history The Battle of Calabria took place it was one of the first large battles between the Italian Royal Navy (16 DD's, 6 CA's, 8 CL's and 2 BB's including the Guilio Cesare) and the British Royal Navy (16 DD's, 5 CA's, 1 CV and 3 BB's including the Warspite) both forces were escorting vital convoys, the Italians to north Africa and the British to Malta, both sides exchanged fire and retreated, the Italians suffered damage to 1 battleship,
1 heavy cruiser and 1 destroyer and the British suffered damage to 1 light cruiser and 2 destroyers.

The Warspite hit the Giulio Cesare at well over 24,000 metres (26,000 yd), which at the time was one of the longest-range naval artillery hits in history.

TBH, I have a book for this. In Dutch, but imagine there's an English version, possibly the original..

Update (that was quick): got the book in front of me and it is not a translation.

It is basically WW2, day by day.

I can go through it and basically post anything Naval related or important enough to warrant inclusion.

Let me know if you would like me to do that, cos it'll take a while, it is over 150 pages. And what the requirements are. @Tuccy

Well the idea is to include interesting incidents related to the naval warfare, plus battles and skirmishes - not necessarily focusing on the well known ones - for example like the Convoy Faith I just added :)

Hmmm...

The 8th of July 1931 was the day invitatiuons were sent for the Washington Naval Conference.

On the 14th of July 1939, Ansaldo completed and proposed a battleship design, codenamed UP.41 to the Soviet. Ultimately it would be rejected, but would sometimes serve as a comparison element - though not as a basis - for the creation of the Sovetsky Soyuz design.

Bismarck was laid down on the 1st of July. Vittorio Venetto was launched on the 25th of July.

On 16 July 1934, a second Dunkerque was order in response to Italy announcing the Littorio-class. On the 24th of July the same year, the French released the specification of a 35kt battleship that would become Richelieu. Between the 22 and 29 July 1944, Richelieu would participate with the British in Operation Crimson, a bombardement of Japanese airfields in Indonesia.

On the 29 and 30 July 1945, KIGV participated in her very last offensive action of the war, bombarding Hamamatsu.

The preliminary design of Yamato was choosen and completed on the 20th of July 1936.

Iowa was opened to the public on the 7 July 2012, 73 years and 6 days after being ordered. USS Illinois and Kentucky, planned as Montanas, were reordered as Iowas on the19th of July 1940.

Not only battles are noteworthy dates in a war~
