To all those players who are fans of Aoba let me say this.

 

-- I think that Aoba is a very good ship indeed. She is a good all-rounder, with the heaviest hitting guns of all tier 6 cruisers. She is every bit as good (if not better) than the USS Cleveland at the same tier (6) that many people love and used to be called "OP".

-- Aoba is also a very handsome ship IMHO, though I accept that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

-- A few months back I did a replay of Aoba and did significantly better in her than the first time around - though that is admittedly not saying much.

And yet . . .  and yet . . . . don't hate me for saying this ... but I find her no fun at all.

I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I don't enjoy any of the Japanese ships except Kuma. The funny thing is that before I actually started playing WoWS I would have put money on IJN ships being my favourites!

The Aoba was once a good cruiser but now not any more. I prefer Nürenberg and Budyoni, they outclass Aoba in many ways. Aoba is now competing with Cleveland for last position among tier 6 cruisers.

Most of the posts about Aoba before patch 0.5.9 are misleading  people that Aoba is a very excellent cruiser. The reality today is quite opposite.

 

Have you seen the one refering to Mogami? Ah... good old memories.

 

Returning to topic, yeah... cruisers have a hard time between tier 5/6 to I'd said 9, maybe with the exception of the russian one, I don't have it but it seems to be quite good or something, then at tier 10 there's Hindenburg and Zao, but yeah... Aobas have quite a hard time lately.

If your in your aoba and you face a cleveland, remember you dont have to face it alone, dial up one of your bbs and have him eat the irritating little firestarter for breakfast, cleves are my favourite bb fodder at that tier and they nom real nice and real quick.

I also remember the times when even BBs were wondering where the f*ck Cleveland had it's citadel.

Just got my Aoba yesterday.... finding her a huge improvement over the Furutaka (sample size is huge though.. 1 battle - it was late!). I did not enjoy the Furu'....

Its gun by far is the best i've had in T6 matches... I've up to a few times citadelled a BB, using AP with Aoba (T6-8 BB even)
So... Yes. her hull is weak. But her guns can do some serious dmg.

my 2 cents:

 

Every time a player reach a ship armed with a "big cannon", as the 203mm for cruisers and the 406/410mm for battleships in the US and IJN line the reaction is always the same: complain.

These guns are excellent in the right hans, with the previous you have more gun/fire rate and you could enjoy a better dpm but if you place yourself at right distance from the enemy for the enemy and shoot a well aimed broadside you'll receive a little prize, with the 203/400mm instead you have a worse dpm but if you make some effort for place a "perfect shot" on the enemy you can get a grat reward.

 

 

About the other problem of the aoba like being obliterated from a single enemy salvo, well, wellcome in the CA meta.

Aoba on the other hand shines compared to the Furry Taco and after that is what I think is the best CA in the line(not at Zao yet so I may be wrong) the Myoko <3

I have a weird feeling you have mishaped them in the middle of the post

last time I was checking up on them furutaka was handling much better than Aoba.....

I actually had a lot more fun in Aoba than Mogami. Mogami seems way more fragile than Aoba when it comes to critical hits.. or maybe you don't get to shine against tier 4s like you do in Aoba!

 

​Same here, the Aoba is a better experience but that's because she came down a tier. I knew from CBT when it was said that the Mogami was to be moved up a tier it would be a bad experience. Even though she was OP at tier 7 she still got hit in the citadel a lot which was her curse. At tier 8 now it's even worse, the Mogami doesn't belong there even more so against tier 9 and 10.

One major advantage that the Aoba has over the Myoko is that it never faces Iowas. Those things erase Myoki in 2 well aimed salvoes regardless of how well angled the cruiser is.
