In most cases there is something blocking the line of sight between you and the one shooting, a smoke screen or an island.

There are rare cases when a ship with high range shoots at someone with low view range, e.g. a BB shoots from 20km on a DD. The BB is too far away to be spotted by the DD and stays invisible.

And lastly, when a ship is following you at a distance slightly higher than your firing range, you can shoot at him without being spotted and the shells can hit him because he is coming closer into your range at the same time. However since you can't target the ship in this case, you will have a much higher dispersion and this tactic is not very effective.

Many explanations:

  1. They are behind islands
  2. They are inside or behind smoke but outside of their firing from smoke detection range
  3. They are inside or behind smoke but only firing secondaries
  4. They are on a course away from you,, a few hundred meters outside of their firing range, with you giving chase

Detection rules: Please read them.
