The Buffalo, first impressions?

So how are you finding the Buffalo so far?

 

I feel that the Baltimore was way better. After sitting in the Buffalo i don't really feel it is a tier 9 at all. 

 

Thoughts?

I was about 60k XP away from Des Moines when the Buffalo arrived. Thought it would be way worse than the Baltimore, but so far, I'm doing ok. It's not as great an island hugger as the Baltimore, so I went for the range upgrade and usually try to stay a bit farther away because of its clumsy handling.

I am just a descent cruiser player, but my maiden voyage was impressive:

  • 179,701 damage done
  • three ships sunk
  • Confederate, Dreadnought, First Blood
  • and, ofc, it was a loss with 1857 base XP

IMHO, better, second game (first one team collapsed within 4 minutes) was Kraken. Feels much more solid and responsive.

 

Then again, I found Baltimore to be downgrade from New Orleans....

Did not played it. But looking at stats and gameplay he must be somewhat better than odl t9. 12 guns are 12 guns. I know slow reload. Icelandhuger. But that is usa line. Still when you sneek to some broadaide cruiser with 12 USA AP....dear god.

Buffalo's different. The alpha strike is impressive, yes, but she's bigger, handles worse and the old Baltimore had a lot more DPM when going bow in.

Quite nice average damage with her, even some 150k game even when - of course -  everyone shoots at you. Unfortunatelly the ship failed to win a single game yet, at the moment it's a potato magnet. Most likely this will change over time, but at the moment she is bad karma for me ;)

I'm having a blast with her so far. Imo definitely an upgrade from Balti.

 

Hilariously vulnerable to AP bombs though unlike Balti. Beware when running her without DFAA.

Any recommend builds, captain skills and tips how to play this thing before she goes on her first outing?

The good thing is that it's fairly different from Baltimore and Des Moines. Stronger broadside, but much stiffer handling.

That said, personally I much prefer the nimbler Baltimore and Des Moines. I don't see myself playing this one a lot when I can just play Des Moines. You'll be in the same T10 games anyway, so why bring this one.

My 19pt captain for US radar cruisers tends to be:

 

10pt: Priority Target, Adrenaline Rush, Superintendent, Concealment Expert

Last 9pt: Demolition Expert, Expert Marksman, AFT

 

Considering respeccing AFT if the Year of the Carrier doesn't come soon...

 

But otherwise I think Buffalo will get the same.

It can cause a ton of damage but overextending, getting flanked or getting focused leads to pretty quick death.

 

The low velocity and short range make it a pain though and you can easily present your own broadside trying to get a shot on someone else.

 

Someone with excellent map awareness and experience with ships like DM and Zao can probably do amazing with it, but that's not me lol

But I dislike her.

 

It feels sluggish and shells feel not as punchy as German shells

Might expert loader be viable with Doe/ Seagal do yiou feel the need to shorten Ammo switch time? He must be placed somewhere, Halsey will probably go to Montana.

I think it's a good candidate ship for sure. Both the HE and AP are really useful.

 

I put my John Doe in the Pensacola, and he's really nice there.

She is easy to explode even with a Currywurst at long range. :Smile_trollface: Well, she is bigger than the Baltimore and everybody wants to use those back turrets. Can't wait to try out the Montana.

Have her in port, will probably sell without a sail, though i'll probably keep tier 8 Balti. Tier nine is one of those weird tiers.

After a few more games, I do kinda like her. That broadside is just fun, and while the ship is stiff to turn, having those double turrents in the back gives some tactical flexibility.

But that's all in isolation, and ignoring the fact that you're virtually always in T10 games. And then the Des Moines totally cr*ps on this thing, and why would you run this instead of DM?

 

In a hypothetical all-T9 game, I'd happily run it.

After Lepramore I don't even want to try this boat. Des Minor is a trauma for me as well. MY DM gets; citedalled/ one shot by any ship looking funny at me regardless what angle  Yes: it's me, not the ship.... But I'm inclined to let BS-ullow to rot in port indefinitely....

Saw that rudder shift time and nearly had a heart attack :cap_wander: :cap_fainting:

 

Tried it out without the last 2 upgrades and decided the firepower was worth trying again. Slapped all the rudder shift modules and tried again... very impressed.

 

OK so now it's not stealthy at all, but opening up at 12km is still devastating, and wiggling is possible to enable continuous use of all 12 guns with low risk. And when angled it feels very tanky, very solid.

 

Build:

PT, EM, DE, CE

 

Main battery, damage con, accuracy, steering gear 2, steering gear 3, reload
